You’ve experienced the benefit of this philosophy. You’ve learned how to reframe obstacles as opportunities. In short, you’ve learned how to live a good life. And you want to give your children the same experience, only even earlier than you found it.
It’s not a surprise then that one of the most common questions we get is: How should I teach my child about Stoicism? How can we get our children interested in an ancient school of philosophy?
If you have kids, the most important role philosophy can play in all of your lives is in guiding the example you set for them. In the principles you embody. In the standards you hold yourself to. This is the area in which you can have true multi-generational impact.

I raised two kids to adulthood and then had an “oopsie” baby in my forties, essentially starting all over again! My advice to parents is respect. Adults always want kids to respect them, but oddly don’t extend the same respect to their children. Respecting your child as an individual, as their own person, is key. Respect cannot be demanded, it must be earned, and you can set the example by respecting your child from day one.

Yes!!!!!!!!!! We had a son, and we have always treated him with respect from day one. We must earn our children's respect. They are tiny little individuals. Many people look at you like you're crazy when you tell them this.

I hope you don’t ever say oopsie in front of that child. I’m constantly having to help my baby sister heal her heartache bc one of her friends moms called her that when she was little and she’s gone through so much therapy and STILL believes she was unwanted bc she’s an oopsie baby. She’ll never be convinced anyone wanted her. My parents were too old to do things they did with me and my other siblings that were their earliest kids and they were too arrogant to see they messed up

I'm sitting in a car with a crying kid at 10am. I try explaining stoicism and how it can benefit her and how she handles things she doesn't like. I fail miserably. I turn to Ryan and the Daily Stoic for help and just 20 hours before there's a brand new video teaching me everything I need to know to help my little girl. Thanks, Ryan.

Keep doing the work and you will be a great mother. I had a rough childhood too... Lots of trauma and neglect. I've been lucky enough to have an amazing therapist (and the financial ability) to have worked with him for the better part of 13 years. I will never be perfect but, boy am I a different, better person because of the work I have done there. Being a present mother has been the most rewarding part of my life. I wish you the best in your future.

Yeeessss🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 We may have suffered our parents suffering, and our kids may even have suffered our suffering, but knowing what we know now, our grandchildren do not have to suffer our suffering as well, knowing what we know now ❣️💯

Being a parent is the highlight of my life! At 65 I look back at raising my son to be a man was/ is most important. Today he is a loving father with an adoring wife. When my son was young, I remember looking out the window on a rainy day and asking my son if I should wear a coat, I let him make decision's, ya dad wear a coat!

Remember, even Marcus Aurelius. The greatest philosopher of all time failed at raising his son. Nothing in life will prepare you or make you immune to failing as a parent. No one is immune to it. Not even the greatest philosopher.

I do not have kids, nor will I for a long time(I’m a kid technically), but even before I became a stoic I always saw a lot of value in it. After becoming a stoic, I feel that it’s almost a necessity as parenthood is a pretty huge part of life that gives so much meaning. I have been thinking about this topic for a while and seeing this video on my recommended made me light up because I knew this was going to talk about the right type of parenting - the one I’ve been thinking about so much recently, and I was not wrong

Use the Alexander Technique to better implement stoic principles - AT allows us to use our minds and bodies in the most efficient way - purely from a bio-mechanical pov - Frederick Mathias Alexander (Australian actor born 1880 ish) called it taking control of our psycho-physical organism - counter intuitively the process involves mentally ceding control - stopping yourself from trying to be right in your ‘use of yourself’ - another fave Alexander phrase

This is an awesome video. A good reading list. I've worked with traumatized kids for years ... ironically, now it's personal. My daughter is married to an emotionally abusive man that is having a devastating impact on my 9 year old grandson. He is not his biological father. I'm in the position of doing damage control. I'm sure I can find some useful learning in the books suggested.

Thank you for touching on this topic!! I find in the self development/ consciousness expansion content online there is not enough focus on raising children AND evolved consciousness content FOR kids of all ages. Like, how EPIC would a cartoon centered on stoic values be!?!!?! 🤘... I believe it's all on its way. Wish I had it now for my 9 and 11 year old boys.

So, I heard about Ryan Holiday and so I thought I would check him out here on youtube. I like to go all the way back to the very first videos when I check out someone or a certain topic. First video he's selling a coin, second video he's selling a print, third video he's selling another print. This guy seems like a salesman to me. Reply
