When I get disrespected because I’m on social security being economically shamed by the masses as a loser as they base wealth off of iq I simply get revenge against them and smirk at thier stupidity saying to myself money can’t buy intelligence nor love.

There was this one person that I didn’t care too much about and one day, I was at friend’s house 🏡 and she knocked on the door 🚪, I opened the door and she could tell immediately that I wasn’t pleased to see her; she looked at me and said: “it’s always nice to see you” , I was so thrown off coarse , that to this day, I remember her with kindness! 🙏😞🙏

That's right, cultivate perspective in life. Don't get involved, create a distance, a gravel close to the eye looks like a big mountain, extend your arm and it is only a small stone. Detachment not involvement is the key. 😊

When someone messes me up, there's two options. To react in anger or overlook it. It's good to assert with politeness, but I can't let it lean into anger. Feeling the offense sucks, but the anger is worse because now I'm forced into a bad emotional space, where I feel fear and have lost control. If I don't react, I think I keep a bit more of myself.

nice one. rude people justify their shitty behaviours by claiming to just be "telling it like it is" but they rarely ever want to hear what their is is. it always boggles me that people can be so ego driven, never looking inwards but only outside of themselves. i go about life trying to make people smile and have a better day. some of us try to find things to love in others. even aholes. some don't. :( jerks are here to help us grow i suppose.

I needed this. Thanks. Sadly, actual psychopaths are not that uncommon (about 1 in 100 individuals) and when you add in other negative personality types, it's clear we are all going to encounter some of these malign people at some time in our lives. It's important to try and protect ourselves from them physically and financially, but also not to let our minds dwell on them too much or too deeply (as per the quote from Marcus).

4:56 this is an extremely effective mindset for many situations in life. I used to do crisis counseling alongside police and fire departments, seeing even worse things than they would because I EXCLUSIVELY went to the worst cases. I'd be asked all the time how I managed that experience, and before I even knew about stoicism, my perspective was basically just that one way or another I always knew that these kinds of things happen in the world whether I saw them in person or not. So the only difference was that I was seeing them for myself, and that I actually had the *opportunity to help

I like seeing these rude people as just normal humans just doing what they naturally do; it's a way to get what they want. People have different ways of dealing with problems, and even though it's rude, it does not necessarily mean that they are bad people. Seeing like this makes me feel at ease, and makes me realize that maybe their intentions weren't so bad after all.

Hi 👋 It's difficult when you are working with people who are treating you badly. The workplace can be the worst of places. People check up on each other in the way of policing. There is usually a hierarchy. As you say there are differences in people. Some people aren't going to change either. As a gay man I have been treated like a second class citizen. I'm in my sixties and have retired from work now. Thank goodness too. I have experienced some hurtful and hateful situations inflicted on me. I can't change people. I can change myself , to be positive in myself. It's hard , but I can make a choice who to let in to my life. I use my good intuition now.

Oh, thank you so much for this! I needed something that would help me handle my mother's narcissistic behaviour. It made and makes me suffer a lot and unluckily made me become as harsh as she is. Lately I'm reading The Idiot by Dostoevskij and I was wondering if I could ever became as good and pure as Myskin is, despite the unkindness of the people around him. This video was very inspiring, I think I will engage in this

If you can learn unkindness from your mother, you can learn kindness, too. I know I treat people better now than I used to, and because of that, I like myself more. You can do it!

@@melaniemcneil407 thank you. Actually I'm very kind with "normal" people, but I'm harsh with my mother and arrogant people. I became intolerant to unkind people, but I don't like being like that. I guess I have to be stronger in order to maintain my kindness and my peace of mind💜

have you read anything more contemporary! I really benefitted from Lindsay C Gibson's books. The new one 'disentangling from emotionally immature people'' was great, listened to it on audible and I'll listen to it again. I also really enjoyed listening to the mother wound by bethany webster (also on audible). Regards x

It's been rough at times so thanks for these videos. By the way if you were to own just 2 books on Seneca which would you choose? I assume Letters completed of course would be vital along with a collection of his essays that include "On The shortness of Life" and "On Anger" would probably provide the most of his works. Later on I'd look into others such as Phaedra but I feel the first 2 would be a nice place to start.

Last week I was on line at the market when a woman in front was unable to use her Applepay She was angry with the cashier and turned to me for agreement- I decided to show no response, which made her even more angry- now at me for ignoring her As she finally completed her transaction she turned to me and cursed me out- still no response on my end- then a few minutes later she confronted me in the parking lot to curse me out a second time- my reaction- none- stoic Maybe a good strategy dealing with angry and annoying people?

All you say is so true, but I find it extremely hard to practice. I can only wonder why. I simply don't seem to understand the very key and how to use that key. I feel it's a great paradox since I managed to stay in Athens, Greece for five moths. I didn't study philosophy though, but modern Greek.

How do we reconcile the wisdom of meditations with the inhumanity of the Roman society that Marcus presided over - slavery, mortal combat as entertainment etc? I find daily value form the book but struggle with this a bit.

I'm on July 14th of The Daily Stoic. Read Discourses & Meditations and can't help but see some parallels between Stoicism and Christianity. Particularly the temptations of Jesus Christ. The best way to "handle rude people" is to set a demonstrative example in the way that they ought to conduct themselves. By resisting emotional impulse and compulsion as Jesus did when tempted by Satan (the behavioral force of irrational, chaotic impulse) to turn water into wine or commit suicide to see if God would save him (Jesus replied, Don't put God to the test with good reason.) we can effectively become immune to any provocative circumstances or behavior we might come to experience. Dictating them on our terms instead of being puppeteered about like emotional slaves. Like thoughtless animals ripe for manipulation.
