I fully agree Helena. I'm European living in Germany and travel through Scandinavia often and we all have social media in Europe. It isn't that important exept WhatsApp for leaving a massege. To use social media, Netflix and that kind of stuff only shows which social class you are in or you under 20 years old. Additional we can get all other things like fast food restaurants, technical stuff it is the same. Less is more quality.

This may not make sense but, every time I'm in France I feel as if I have stepped into a world that says, "you don't need to take yourself too seriously here, just be" and it works every time :) People seem more calm, the architecture becomes more beautiful, sitting having a coffee with someone becomes like having a massage you never want to stop! Just being you in France seems to mean something, it's like being invited into a deep beautiful feeling....... I don't know if that makes any sense to people? But I love France and the French :)

Makes no sense to me. Because i am not american. I don't understand how it is to dream of becoming a millionnaire, or to dream of being someone else, or to feel that money is such an important thing. It seems to me that everything in the USA is about money. But to a french like me, money is a mean to an end, and the end is living a decent life. I don't understand the point in accumulating more than you need. I never chose any job based on the pay. At times, i even forgot to even ask how much it was paid, and so, i have no idea how it is to live in a society that is all about "performance", and i don't understand why people would rank countries depending on their GDP. Especially considering how GDP depends on the number of people living in the country. So, i don't get how you feel. These are all mysteries to me. But i guess that what matters is feeling at ease, and making sure to be a positive existence for those you meet every day.

Never been into money, got enough, that's fine by me :) more interested in good people, beautiful architecture, a history that one can feel etc. The American attitude to money, fame etc etc bores me, all seems pointless but US and a lot of the wold has been infected by those values! Probably why the world is looking like it's going to collapse soon !

@@TheLastSongbird124 Exactly. The world is presently crumbling. The poison comes from the USA. Interestingly enough, most problems one can find anywhere, that one may be willing to study, will ultimately see its origin stem from the USA. I tried this, others did, and we reached the same conclusions. And when it comes to this infectious values... Fact is: France was never all that receptive towards the USA propaganda, and our relationship with them has been strained since 1942. This means that France as a country, and the french, as people, have always had a pretty unusual take on the USA and their ways, compared to other countries that didn't block their propaganda during the Cold War. Notably, european ones. This explains a lot of things that people who speak english may be otherwise confused about. And overall, this explains (in part only) why France's position towards the english language and english speaking countries is pretty unusual for a so-called "western country". Agree with our immigration problem. We have been disagreeing with this nonsensical, uncontrolled immigration since the 80's. We have tried every last political party in existence, and most simply denied the existence of the problem. A migration law is presently being made, though, because the rightmost wing is getting stronger as a result of french people demands being ignored for 40 years. But it was recently censored by the Constitutional Council. This law was planning, for example, that migrants that snuck illegally in France would not be sustained, lodged, healed, fed, and so on by french tax payers anymore, unless stricly necessary. It instaured illegal migration as an offence. It enforced the fact that illegal migrants would be sent back, while this was never enforced until now, prompting people to use illegal and risky mafias to sneak into France. Because "if you don't get found out before you cross the border, then you won't be thrown out and you can become french if you manage to remain there long enough in clandestinity". Since right now, we have an obligation of providing EVERYTHING to illegal migrants, up to healthcare and lodging, no matter how much they lack ressources themselves, and since we can't throw them out either, we end up having to welcome them however we feel about it. Time and again, since 1976. This law, amongst other things, stopped people from getting french citizenship simply by being born in France even clandestinely (anwyhere in France, whether in metropolitan France, in Polynesia, or off the coasts of Africa, in South America or in the Carribeans. Plenty of ways to do it) and, once they reached age 18, to demand the legal migration of all their damn family on top of it. But apparently, the COnsitution determines that we ought to pay healthcare and give money to everyone and their mom in this world, as long as they manage to reach some french teritory somewhere. Meaning, the law is once again emptied of its essence. Right now, there are two ways... First, they are trying to go the referundum way. Up to now, politicians managed to avoid that by saying it was illegal to ask the french people about migration issues (a technicality). But the consitution was slightly modified in 2008... and it may be possible now, if difficult. Considering that 76% of the french are supporting this law, this would be tantamount to have it adopted. And if the referundim can(t be done, the only recourse is voting for the last political party that wasn't tried yet, and that is commonly defined as "the far right". I am pretty sure that if this law is not adopted, the far right will win the next elections. Almost certain. The french are beyond fed up at this point. This is insanely intense. Resentment and annoyance that has boiled for 40 years will end up creating something pretty new. For better of for worse. Well, this is all french problematics and politics. If interested, great. If not, to write this was still a good language training for me :).

But probably, this was all devised by Thatcher (UK) and Reagan (USA) in the 80's, who concluded that it was fair to risk repeating the 1929 black Friday, since probably, only the people would pay for it. Not billionnaires. They removed all limits that 1929 introduced and so, we now have the leisure to have financial crises all the time. And billionnaires can be billionnaires. Yes! Toxic fungus describes life in the states perfectly! Seems there is no escaping it unless one just lives in country and stays away from our cities! Even going into our small (3000) town for some simple shopping realy plays on my nerves and puts me in a kind of bad mood!! Driving even on our country roads, people are always in a hurry and there are so many accidents, senseless ones! I'm always saying I wish people would just slow down and be more mindful and not always be in a rush rush hurry hurry frame of mind! It truly does affect ones health, living such a stressful hurried lifestyle!!

Helena, I have watched this three times, to take in everything you are saying here. So interesting what you say about the French way of life, I think Spanish and Italians are very similar too. I notice from living in Spain, people do not worry so much about money, fast cars, looking perfect. And yet they are always smiling and happy, contented with a simple life, being social, living in a community, eating simple but lovely food, appreciating what they have. I loved watching your video. I am french and it is all very true. Little to no superficiality (most of the time), healthy debates, putting the clothes out to dry, the 1h lunchbreak with colleagues that turn into 1h30 because the talks are so interesting... How you become completely immersed into your workday to keep very a high productivity rate in exchange for reasonnable working hours, the saturday afternoons with friends sharing our views about life or the state of the world at a cafe and then going at a local theater to see a play or strolling around in an art gallery. These are moments of my life that are very valuable to me. Also, I am luck enough to not own a car because I don't need one. I use the very efficient public transportation and I like walking a lot and I don't use social media platforms.

My hypothesis: I had a tourist trip to the USA (I'm French) a few years ago. Everything went perfectly, without problems, the organization was perfect and the Americans were totally professional. I was able to enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the American West without encountering the slightest difficulty. But I have one regret; I haven't had a single real meeting with Americans. In France, our organization is certainly not as perfect, we are often forced to ask for help from others, sometimes to confront them, to face the unexpected and to have to adapt. But over time, we learned to do it without drama, peacefully, and even having fun. We are certainly less obsessed with performance and illusory perfection, and we have learned to take the time to appreciate what life offers us...

i believe you for most people. I met my perfect man after two mistakes...dont give up I say. I met him at 32 when I had been widowed a year and had an 8yr. Daughter. I lived a full mindful life the entire way. I was a psych professor so I knew. He just passed away at 80 a few days ago. WE had an amazing life filled with living aboard a sailboat for years in the Caribbean, traveling Europe mos at a time in summers,,, hurricane season NOT a time to be sailing the Caribbean. Then we picked an amazing tropical Spanish heritage mountain town to settle down.we learned Spanish. We made every day of 41 years amazing...I wouldnt mind rewinding it and living it all over again forwards, backwards,any way wold be sublime but I HAD IT and that keeps me happy. Though I know I will miss him, right now all I can do is be Grateful.

Ahhh LOVE this video! Thank your sharing the French way of living! Yes, being immersed in a culture allows one to learn the language quickly. I lived in Mexico and learned the language quickly and I was functioning in Spanish within a couple of months and bi-lingual by the time I returned to the US. I am an anomaly though - I have a some crazy capacity to pick up languages and regional accents very quickly. I love the simplicity of women's beauty in France and allowing to age gracefully and naturally. All the botox, fillers, plastic surgery, hair extensions, acrylic nails here in the US to fight the inevitable of aging. And it looks over done. It's impossible to avoid. Ok - I color my hair. I eat well, exercise and take care of my skin (exfoliate once a week, apply vitamin C and a barrier facial cream daily) That's it. I will look into Lingoda and see if it fits in the budget to learn French - just for fun!

What a lovely and thoughtful video that is also beautifully shot! Because of similar sentiments, my husband and I are looking to move from the US to Vienna within the next few months. We're retired, so we still need to get clear on the health insurance costs etc., but if that works out as we suspect, then we'll make the leap to a slower more elegant and slow life there. We're visiting right now and are completely in love, same as you are with France and the French way of living. It helps that I am fluent in German.

I’m Spanish and most or nearly all these habits are common here as well. We have always hung clothes to dry, we take long walks, visit museums and expositions, take one hour or more for lunch on daily basis, travel frequently around Europe and visit different Countries... for example. And playing guitar is a completely Spanish tradition and you can see this I you come to Spain, mainly in the South. Actually the guy in the video is singing in Spanish... It’s not frequent in France to see French people singing in the street like this... I guess from US it’s a very different style of life but it’s more a European way of life versus US way of life although each Country has its own habits as well. We are very different in so many things... Very nice video in any case. I encourage you to visit Spain one day. You will be very welcome :-)

As a French woman, I truly appreciate your kind words on my country, although I think they may be somewhat exaggerated. For example, it is true that most French people do not own a dryer (I do not), but it's not to enjoy the slow movement of time or the subtle touch of fabrics, it's simply because 1) our homes are usually much smaller that their American counterparts, and adding an extra appliance would be complicated, and 2) frankly, because dryers are of little use... What, do you really need to wash and dry this top or pair of chinos and wear them the very same day? Lastly, another thing: culture. It is true that our culture is state-sponsored, which is a good thing, because it allows many artists to survive, but on the other hand, many French people do not care a fig about culture.

I loved both of my times in France and how they view getting older, how they enjoy food without having to count the calories or fat or carb intake., and just how slow they take things it is so refreshing to go to France or anywhere that has this way of thinking. Thanks for sharing.

Having said that, there's a lot of fat shaming in France too so only the slim ones get to enjoy (calorie dense) food guilt free... (I'm French, born and raised in France, living in Australia where fat shaming is a big no no)

French here, I think most French households don't have dryers because we don't have an overconsumption problem so much, wanting to buy whatever thing will make life just a bit easier. Dryers and dishwashers are not really necessary, so why have them? They take up space and use a lot of energy.

I am French and you have my admiration. Being open and ready to learn from others even if you do not agree is something I found that was impossible in the United States. People were so offended by a viewpoint that was not theirs, if they did not agree, they simply shut down the conversation not willing to hear another viewpoint. This is especially true in the politics, which is very sad. Our cafés are our meeting places or just to be alone and reflect. We love discussion and are very Latin that way,

Throughout my life, people would ask me “ if you were to learn a different language what would it be?” And I would always say French I love watching movies that are based around France watching your videos makes me feel good and relaxing and your in France I feel my inter peace is in France as a child and even now I’m drawn to the Eiffel Tower and would love to stands under it and I do visit it on Google Earth

Speaking of syncronocity, im planning to move to Europe and just thought of my starting point to be at france(also my goal is to learn french the most i can in one year period) and here were i am watching a video about habits(which i need since i realized a have lots of bad habits) Sometimes God speak to us and we have to be aware when it happens. I think these are true for all of Europe, some more, and some less. I live temporarily on another continent, it made me realize I could not live permanently anywhere else then in Europe. Really nice video.
