I miss my budgie Johnny, he was the best pet I ever had. We did everything together, the only time he was ever in his cage was at night time when we went to sleep but other than that we watched tv together, we ate together, we showered together, during the summer I brought him outside with me when his wings were clipped and in the winter he flew around my house. I had other birds too but I always felt he bonded to me instead of to a female bird like my other budgies did. He’s also the only budgie I ever had that could talk well

My bird loved to be chased. I would approach her and would say 'who's gonna get ya?'. If she perked up, it meant she wanted to play. If she didn't react or put her head down it meant she didn't. The excitement of trying to out-maneuver me really got her happy, and she won quite a few of those games. She would fly over to me and gloat after her victories. That one was full of personality, and she lived a lengthy 12 years. :)

Yeah, I can relate. I started taming my bird and she was getting very comfortable around me and very excited when I entered the room, but she hadn't learned to be touched yet. That was all until her eye caught some kind of disease and I needed to grab her in order to put a specific liquid in her eye for it to heal. I had to do it every day because that's what the vet had told me. I hated just the thought of it but I didn't want my bird's health to worsen. After I grabbed her for the first time, I could tell it broke her trust. Now every time I try to give her her favorite treat by hand, she just keeps looking at me and the treat defeated. She now only goes to it once I leave the treat on the perch. She gets very anxious when I enter the room now and every time I try to be around her, when she eventually relaxes just a little she keeps looking at me but not in the same look as before. This whole thing is so hurtful.

A bit of biting when getting medicine is completely normal. Worry if your bird doesn't give you some trouble. That would be a sign of getting worse / weaker / declining health. I'd also say most budgies don't really bite in a serious way. I have 6 and while all do some obligatory warning nibbles when they need medicine, only one of them bites for real. Because some birds (like my girlfriends and many others) like to be held like an avocado and it doesn't bother them, obviously other birds are different, so just do what you can for your bird and please do a lot of research and talk to your local BIRD store (not pet smart if you can help it) and see what they recommended, but remember a bird isn't a dog or cat that understands humans from the second it's born, they need you to realize you are safe and a person that they can trust, I could go way deeper but that's the basics I've learned from being with my girlfriend while she got her cockatiel and eclectus, so thank you for reading my ted talk:)

Put some toys or what not on the outside of the cage (or attached to it on the outside) to encourage it to come out
@blayneman21332 жыл бұрын
I agree with @@cowuwu1 s comment, also try not to force the bird into anything, just try leaving the cage open for a while and see if it wants to come out itself, also another quick tip is for any birds that aren't for breeding I'd highly recommend against mirrors because that can make them get sexually active, especially females are bad about laying eggs and that can cause issues for them mentally and physically but can also cause them to be very territorial, also any small enclosed spaces like boxes or nest type things, but happy bird owning:)
@blayneman21332 жыл бұрын
@Linen Rosette so the mirror thing could be your issue, they can get really obsessed with mirrors and start trying to mate with it and get confused, so a fake bird or just being around them yourself is your best bet, also trying to train step up with a perch has worked very well for me and my gf, so I whould recommended ditching the mirror and start trying to train step up with a small perch that fits in the cage easy so if they get out they know the perch is safe until you can train to pick it up by hand, and windows can be hard to train away from but they will learn, just remember if anything bad happens to have at least corn starch nearby if god forbid bleeding happened, but other than that I'd just remove the mirror and try to be near the cage as much as possible, getting a bird to trust you is like adopting a toddler, you have to show them that you're trustworthy for them to start trusting you, also their physical well being is more important then trust, if you have to pick them up to possibly save their live then oviously do it, just not as a fun thing of course, but I hope that helps and if you have any other questions I'm happy to help with the knowledge I have:) Edit: when I said pick up the first time I mean stepping up onto fingers and the second time as like if you have to grab them like a lemon

😂 I've had my little Georgie 3 weeks, he now comes in and out of his cage every day in the mornings untill he's ready to go back in for his tasty treat ( millet) but today I had to go out so I couldn't let him out this morning! As soon as I came home I went to let him out and he didn't want to know 😂 he just turned his back on me, so I guess he was annoyed at me for changing his routine ( bless him ) I love my bird.

The wing clipping thing is definitely true! In my opinion, unless it's necessary, it's cruel to clip a bird's wings and can be detrimental in some cases to that bird's health. It can make them depressed

i used to have a budgie that i just didn't bought, it came to my house one day and i kept it, and i like to think he had a lot of trust in me, because he flew out many times and kept coming back to me, once there was a strong wind and it took him away, he ended in a branch and i called him to come with me and he did, he then hid behind my hair

in the grabbing part, when you filed their nails,,, I THOUGHT YOU WERE CUTTING THEIR FOOT- YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD I PANICKED

Some of these really depend on the bird. Although true to some degree. It's whatever personality your Budgie will have. Mines actually likes being grabbed. And be messed around with. Bird personality can be weird sometimes

Is it ok if i just give my budgie a little plate of water and if he wants he can but he doesn't have to? (Just for fun cause my dad's bird loved these)
@blayneman21332 жыл бұрын
I whould say absolutely! Giving them the option to a bath but not forcing it is a great idea!

"don't touch birds back" mine barely even let me touch his beak:p And we literally never lock him up he can go in and out of his cage and fly around whenever he wants.

I don't have many options as far as petting mine. He does NOT like a head scratchin' and of course, I don't want to pet him on the back. I settle for a chest stroke (he still backs off a bit), and a face nuzzle. He doesn't mind a good eskimo nose rubbing. Other than that, he is very loving and crawls all over me. He loves standing on my bald head too.

my budgies love when I smother them in my hands, its just the matter of trust and the type of energy you give.

I have a small cage for my 2 budgies, I ordered a larger one online that I will arrive in about a week. Is it alright to have a small cage for a short amount of time?
@Bird-Nuggets2 жыл бұрын
As long as you are indeed planning to replace the cage to a larger one very shortly.

I try to avoid clipping my white winged parakeet's wings. But she screams like a banshee when she flies. Eventually she drives me nuts and I get them clipped. Then she sits in her cage and sulks for weeks. Finally, she comes out and motions for me to pick her up and points to where she wants to go. I become a bird Uber. Serves me right.
@vickymarinou62712 жыл бұрын
That's sad. She's obviously so excited when she can fly and it sounds like she gets depressed rather than sulking when they're clipped. Perhaps a bird isn't the best pet suited for you if the noise she makes when happy is so annoying to you that you would rather deprive her of her joy rather than tolerate it.
@oldsesalt84962 жыл бұрын
@@vickymarinou6271 She's been able to fly again for 10 months. She calmed down and we're doing fine. I actually bought her because I had a similar species (Grey Cheek) years ago that was very sweet. She was also half off. No one wanted her. She has kind of a sour personality. It took months to get her accustomed to me. She likes to stand next to the clocks. The ticking I guess.

I dont agree with the first one as far as medium to large birds go. You do have to bath your birds to prevent yeast build up on their skin which can lead to plucking. But you have a mister bath or a shower with your bird. Its more critcal to birds like african greys and macaws as an example. If you were just referring to small birds i would recommend editing the video title to what small birds hate. Because most small birds are amazing at bathing themselves. Oh and my birds adore phone calls they love to talk with you and get excited you just might not like hearing them lol. My amazon gets extra loud and over 100db good luck hearing anyone lol.
