The bat was a little stereotypical if all bats did this or that, it was also a cool series for their respective decade.

That is until the last one were it seems he messed up the riddle to have have no real answer, this was the clue that none of the bombs were real and a distraction from another crime. Everyone else just tried to think harder of the answer and were almost fooled of getting the wrong one, in the end the Riddler was using the wild goose chase as a means to buy time so he can hack into the central bank.

I love Cory's portrayal of the Riddler. Everyone is saying that Paul Dano is the best Riddler. While yes, Dano's performance was absolutely amazing and he was a great Riddler, he wasn't the Riddler. The Riddler is an insane genius that loves to put on a show while commiting his crimes. Dano's Riddler didn't do this. Yes, he was a very smart character, but the rest of the original character traits were left behind. The Batman's Riddler isn't THE Riddler. Someone put it by saying that he isn't Edward Nygma, he's Edward Nashton.

I'd have to disagree with number 1. The greatest Batman villains are a reflection of, or counter to, Batman's own qualities, and the Riddler is no exception. Two-Face reflects the Bruce/Batman split personality. Scarecrow reflects Batman's use of fear as a weapon. Catwoman walks the line between immorality and illegality, same as Batman. Penguin is a member of high society by day, but is an animal-based outlaw by night. Ras Al Ghoul is a ninja who works outside the law to battle injustice and crime. The Joker is a happy go-lucky unstoppable agent of chaos, while Batman is a dark, brooding, unwavering example of pure discipline. And the Riddler reflects Batman's amazing genius intellect and problem solving capabilities. The exception to the rule would be Poison Ivy. I got nothin' for her. As well as Mr. Freeze who I'd say appeals to us because he's a sympathetic character with a cool gimmick. The reason the Riddler worked so well in the Arkham games (specifically the second and fourth) was because they played up on the cunning and intelligence aspect. His entire deal was he wanted to prove he's smarter than Batman, and he was completely obsessed with doing so. That was his identity. In the Jim Carrey version we find out the only reason he's sucking Gotham's intelligence was for, "credit card numbers, bank codes, sexual fantasies, and little white lies." In the end that just made him about money and power.
@burningstar17935 жыл бұрын
Poison Ivy resembles his strong morality when it cimes to the value of life. Where Batman will go very out of his way to save someone regardless of risk or who They are. Poison Ivy treats plants in that same way while regarding human life as unnecessary and in the way. Freeze reflects him because he spends his life brooding and obsessing over someone he has loved and lost (sort of). Ivy and Freeze reflect his morality and obsessive traits.

@ShiranaiSonzaisha7 жыл бұрын
Ya I like this channel they seem like they know what they are talking about but complaining about the clever naming behind Edward Nygma may be one of the stupidest things I have seen people complain about ignorantly in a very long time. It's the ABC's of comics. They all have names like that EVERY villain and their civilian name as well as all the heros and SOME of their civilian name's. No one walked around saying Enigma to people before the riddler. It wasn't a common name it was a very synonym name for "mystery." Now that The Riddler has been around for well over 50 years people hear the word enigma because they actually say it now (especially in Sci-Fi as it is a futuristic sounding word) and immediately associate it with the Riddler. Then to add insult to injury he bitched about Harleen Quinzel as well. No one talks about Harlequin's in the US before Harley Quinn. Harlequin is another name for clown it fit perfectly. Your ignorance is showing Whatculture.
@ahnafdrubo97277 жыл бұрын
George Spears Exactly. Harlequin is still a bit cliché. But Edward Nygma is a very mysterious, interesting and smart name
@ShiranaiSonzaisha7 жыл бұрын
There is a good reason for Harley Quinn though which makes it acceptable to be cliche. The Joker is THE most iconic villain in comics history. Period. People often think he was the first villain Batman faced because of how iconic he is but the Riddler, Penquin, and Hugo Strange all came long before. So if you want to make a sidekick for your most popular villain how the hell do you achieve that where people are going to remember it? Just like enigma, harlequin was not a commonly used name in the US. It meant clown specifically a jester but it wasn't a word used here. So you call your character Harley Quinn which literally outright says HARLEQUIN and Harleen Quinzel as her civilian name. Jesters wear a cap with bells and dress in two toned clothing. So have Harley wear a jester cap and dress like them and you have a similar yet distinct word association with the Joker. Not only that but she also looks like she comes out of a pack of cards. Which the joker throws at people in the animated series! Do you see the brilliance now? Harley Quinn is one of the most popular female characters in comics by a long shot. Yet she has been around the shortest time. So how can she be so popular if she is such a new character? She is memorable. Her name is similar yet distinct enough from the Joker. Which gives her name association not just with herself but with the Joker as well! There is one thing that makes Edward Nygma's name better than hers. He speaks in riddles that is his whole thing. So the ridiculously easy puzzle needed to "solve" his name is a riddle. Though this is common with the vast majority of heroes and villains alike. The Riddler is one of the only characters it actually makes perfect sense for that character to do this. It fits his character completely.
@ahnafdrubo97277 жыл бұрын
George Spears I agree with most of your statements. It was nice to lhave Harley's character dress like her name and stuff . But it would've been better to make the name something a bit more mature and realistic . Harley Quinn is too easily changed into harlequin. Something a bit different but something that'll still have the reference would've been better for me atleast. Sorry for my bad choice of words. My English vocabulary isn't the best

@@silentangel2259 Exactly! Jim Carrey may have said he based his performance on Gorshin, but he really only did an exaggeration of the wackier parts of Gorshin's portrayal. What made Gorshin's performance so good (he was the only member of the cast to be nominated for an Emmy), was that he could switch from being over the top to suddenly deadly calm and serious. It was this ability to switch from giggling loon to stone cold killer that really made him stand out in a show where everyone else's performance was mostly ham. He was so popular that he took what was a relatively minor Batman villain and single-handedly made him one of Batman's most popular Rogues. That Carrey's cheesy The Mask part 2 style performance is compared to his makes me roll my eyes hard.

The best thing about the Arkham portrayal of the Riddler is that he isn't actually very smart. He is simply incredibly deluded about his superiority and wants to prove himself better than Batman. LIsten to his Arkham Asylum interview tapes and you'll see that he admits to cheating as a child, he is frequently wrong about things but refuses to admit it, and his riddles aren't riddles at all but morbid jokes designed to make his interviewer uncomfortable. When Batman beats him in each game, it's not because of the clues that the Riddler intentionally leaves, but accidental clues he left that Batman picked up on, like tracing his transmissions and finding out how he bought properties, etc. Then, the Riddler can't understand why he's been beaten, because Batman played outside his very narrow set of rules, his very limited worldview where the RIddler is the best.

Shaco it Off The Riddler is a smart man but, not that smart. If anything he’s a conspiracy theorist since the purpose of The Riddler going after The Batman is because he wants to prove that The Batman is in on the crimes and is somehow planning the crimes to create control. The Riddler is acting as an anarchist in the way that The Joker does but, the biggest differences between the two is that The Riddler is out to expose The Batman of being a fake and a liar about the acts that he commits while The Joker is out to prove that The Batman is as insane and ready to break as the rest of humanity The best thing about Batman characters is how symbolic each character is. The Riddler serves as the symbol for people who cannot accept someone else being better than themselves, which is why The Riddler suffers from narcissistic tendencies, which can also be pointed out by many psychologists in The Batman universe. The guy who made this video has not looked or listened to The Riddlers reasoning apparently, but he has a very valid reason for going after The Batman, just like all of the villains do. My favorite is Scarecrow and Raz

Two things: I loved the concept of Riddler as a good guy. That bit after Hush as not only a breath of fresh air for the character, but lead to some very interesting bits...including the revaluation that he might really be a better investigator than Batman. The supporting character idea is sound, but I personally think he would be a better leader. If I had the chance, I'd like to see the Riddler put together his own criminal organization, a sort of mini-Legion Of Doom. Considering his skills, his ability for elaborate plans and his habit of planning WAY in advance, he could be a powerful force.

It's a shame that DC abandoned reformed Riddler idea. It was great and had a ton of potential. He still wanted to "defeat" Batman and what better way to prove that he was smarter than solving the crimes that Batman couldn't. And he was still an arrogant dick no one can stand so that created a lot of great interactions and relationships with other characters. It was also fun when bad guys went after him for betraying them and when he couldn't beat them, he had to go to Batman for help.

I am sad they gave up on the "reformed" idea. For whatever reason only girls and thugs can apparently be good or wild cards. But having a character who would work for either hero or villain if challenged and paid was one they didn't do enough with. Also, I think the name thing was explained-- his name is actually Edward Nashton, but upon deciding he was going to do the whole "Riddler" gimmick he gave himself the alias of "E. Nygma" because... well, his compulsion to at least give people a fair shake at catching him... I mean this is a city in which no one can figure out that Batman must be funded by the only guy in the city with the money and technology to create such an individual, so you kind of have to be really flippin' obvious for anyone to catch on.
@KamisamanoOtaku7 жыл бұрын
Seems like a fact of life in "extended" storytelling like comic books: almost every hero has a face-heel turn and every villain a heel-face turn. Usually its a temporary thing, but sometimes it works really well as a long time thing and... as a concept, the Riddler being one of the examples of a reformed Batman rogue is great. I am sad they reversed it again. It is one thing to have him backslide, needing to repair more damage done; in fact that is one of those great ways to ground a fantastic character in reality. As for the name, I'm more than okay with it. I like it, and its actually pretty plausible since oh yeah, Gotham City is in the USA, right? Countless immigrants changed their names when they got here; just find some "old world" name where Nigma or Nygma makes sense... or reveal that Eddie's sense of humor/wit takes after whatever ancestor decided "Why I could go by E. Nygma and have a clever, memorable name!" (Whether he was right or not XD). I'll also add that the re-imaginings for the various Batman villains as we saw them in "The Batman" (2004-2008); some were rather jarring at first, and a few are still kind of disappointing, but they do grow on you. I think many of them tried to "flip the script" in a good way. I love how (for example) Batman: The Animated Series gave such great, often tragic, backstories to its villains *but* but too much of a good thing makes it rather bad. I believe the Riddler works best *without* serious childhood abuse or trauma. Since I made this so long already, I'll just add that other than the points in contention, the video was good and (now that I know about them), I tend to agree with their stance on the rest of the points.

You forgot different versions of Catwoman from the 70s/80s when she wore a purple outfit with a cape that had green trimmings. This is because the good guys have been traditionally depicted in primary colors - red, blue, yellow (or some combination). Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman (primarily blue when old school). You see those colors, and generally the person sporting them are going to be the good guys (like good cowboys wore white hats). So you drop to the secondary colors - green, orange, and purple (Joker having all 3 if he's wearing an orange vest with his purple suit) - for the baddies - or for characters who don't really fit one morality or the other like the Hulk - green with purple pants. Of course, there are exceptions, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Aquaman (orange and green), Reverse Flash, etc.

The Riddler was my most favorite villian from the Batman series. And his 2 episodes for the beginning seasons of Batman the Animated series were the best portrayals of him ever. Unlike the later versions where he no longer uses riddles.
@sbird86753 жыл бұрын
The funny thing about the TAS version is that one of the main writers/creators hated Riddler which is why he wasn't introduced until episode 41. The creator felt Riddler was too silly for the tone of the series, but was pressured into using him because of his popularity with fans. He decided if he was going to be forced to use the character, he would make him a darker, more serious threat. Thus, one of the Riddler's best portrayals was born.

#9. To me, I will never forget that as both a Manson fan and the episode regarding his origin. For those who didn't watch it, you go through the typical "mad genius origin" of a guy who is isn't recognized for his work and overshadowed by a jockish type of guy who runs the company and funds his research. Edward also has a love interest who has all his proclivities and enjoys his riddles and works along side him at the same place. Seemingly at the moment of Edward's glory his newest invention goes array and he is disgraced after some examination it's obvious his device has been tampered with and he blames the guy who runs the company and becomes the riddler to get revenge. *But There's a twist* it's only after being stuck with batman (which is the narrative framing device for how his origin is told as both think they're about to die a slow painful death at the bottom of gotham bay) and going over his origin does he figure out that it's the girl who he liked ,who stayed with the company guy after he left, who tampered with his device. Riddler escapes and tries to kill her but batman stops him and arrest him. As he and Robin(who got introduced in season 3) leave, batman says the riddle "When is a villain not *the* villain?" as the picture holds on a clearly hurt and dejected Riddler's face.

They did him really very well in Gotham with the slow burn until they decided to suddenly rush him into full fledged villainy - The Actor playing him however has done a magnificent job! Batman Forever however is outright the worst Batman Movie of all time - Yes far worse even than Batman & Robin! TBH Tommy Lee Jones Two Face is also awful and by far Tommy Lee Jones' worst ever performance! While Kilmer and O'Donnell aren't good either {O'Donnell for me is actually better in Batman & Robin.}.

Despite the claim at the beginning of this video, The Joker made numerous appearances in comics of the 1940s' & 1950s'. He was definitely a recurring and popular villain. It is correct the Joker was meant to die in his first story, but the creators realized there was something special about the character and changed the original ending so that the villain survived. His role as a murderer was downplayed by the advent of the Silver Age of comics, though. The Riddler made only two Golden Age appearances before returning in the 1960s' comics and in the 1966 TV series.
@damotoneko15007 жыл бұрын
You bring up pretty interesting and good points. While i think the Riddler is a Batman villian, the idea of having his high intellect used to solve crimes is rather cool, infact. He may just become one of my favorite DC goodguys if he did. I like his puns. Although he could also go abit further by using the hard ones. Ranging from puns, to riddles, to very hard puzzles. 1. What is the heaviest bird in the city? The crane. 2. A cowboy rode into a town on friday, he stayed three days and then left on friday. How is this possible? 3. You release a horde of zombies, you, the assistant, the scientist and the janitor flee and arrive at the rope bridge. It can only support 2 and you cannot cross without the lantern. The zombies will take 17 minutes to catch up. You can cross in 1 minute, the assistant takes 2 minutes, the janitor takes 5 minutes and the proffessor takes 10 minutes. How will you all cross in time? He could use some variation ranging from easy to hard :D
@RowdyRodimus7 жыл бұрын
#2 The horse he was riding was named Friday #3 Since the bridge can support 2, there isn't any problem since the longest it would take for the four walking in pairs to cross is 10 minutes for the professor. As for Riddler solving crimes, just before the 89 Batman came out I wrote a story for English class in where The Riddler does just that. He becomes a private eye and gains the trust of Batman and the GCPD. The cases were impossible to solve but somehow Nygma did it and they put a lot of criminal leaders in prison. However, it turns out HE was the one committing the crimes, making them impossible to solve and making sure to leave false evidence that would implicate the crime bosses so he could take over Gotham's Underworld.
@damotoneko15007 жыл бұрын
RowdyRodimus 2. Correct! 3. BZZZZZZzzz Nope. You cannot cross without a lanter so they need to go back everytime to get the others. Dang. That's an interesting plot.
@DrLipkin7 жыл бұрын
Riddler went straight and became a private investigator in the aughts. And it was great. Especially because Penguin had also gone straight at the time, realizing he could make better profits capitalizing on his reputation to run the Iceberg Lounge and gouging people on T-shirt prices. There was even a bit where Gotham was going to hell around them, and Penguin and Riddler are just sitting in the otherwise empty Iceberg Lounge drinking. Penguin mentions that the Lounge is willed to Riddler should anything happen to Penguin. They clink glasses, and it's a nice moment. Reformed Riddler was also a supporting character in Gotham City Sirens, which was about Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy all living in a house together trying to get by. Whoever made Riddler crazy again is dumb.
@damotoneko15007 жыл бұрын
DrLipkin That sounds like a very cool idea. But would it really be the iceberg lounge if the Penguin was out of the picture? Really? Wait, if he's reformed then why is he supporting Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and catwoman? You mean in the later incarnations such as the cartoons? Or did you mean chronologically in the comics?
@DrLipkin7 жыл бұрын
DA MotoNeko At the end of the day, the Iceberg Lounge is an establishment. At the time, it was being branded as a place where rich socialites could get their thrills by rubbing elbows with the criminal underworld. Criminals knew Penguin wouldn't narc on them (not actually true, as he was informing for Batman at the time), and the yuppies were tricked into feeling at ease by how fancy the place was. None of that is dependent upon Penguin. Catwoman, Ivy, and Harley were on the right side of the law at the time too, trying to keep their noses clean. Batman and Gordon both knew where they lived and were keeping tabs on them.

To be fair though, the backstory in The Batman for the riddler is amazing.
@ScreamingScallop7 жыл бұрын
He also works as a Green Arrow villain because we must #neverforget that (as noted in "Batman: The Brave and the Bold") for a long time GA himself was just a Batman knockoff who wore his utility belt on his back--he had an Arrowcar, an Arrowplane, an Arrowcave, a young boy sidekick, even an Arrowsignal for the cops to summon him. (What he NEVER had, until he hooked up with the JLA, Green Lantern and Black Canary, was a Commissioner Gordon or Alfred or anybody interesting to interact with in his own stories aside from his sidekick.) I'm not bothered by Jim Carrey's Riddler. Is it any less whackaloon than Frank Gorshin's portrayal? And yet Gorshin's Riddler and Romero's Joker are both iconic portrayals that stand on their own side by side. (On the other hand, John Astin's "grounded" Riddler--when he VERY briefly took over the role from Gorshin--is completely forgettable.) Hey, didn't Riddler have his own girl sidekick that he ultimately murdered when he "went bad" again? DC probably wants everyone to forget that they used to regularly and merrily depict everything from cannibalism to strangulation to rape just to get sickos to drop a few bucks for some violent whacking material.

One of my favourite elements of the Riddler is that he actually does have a deep, subconscious desire to be caught. He's very smart, almost as smart as Batman, and could likely kill him with a single, impossible riddle, but he's obsessed with making his Riddles actually solvable, if difficult. The Arkham games are the best example, because a lot of the Riddles try to kill Batman, but still contain an intentionally placed solution. If Riddler wasn't obsessed with playing fair, he could just create a deathtrap riddle that was impossible to escape.

Actually he changed his name to E.Nigma when he left his father

THANK YOU. That was going to bother me all night. Of course that name is just too coincidental, it's fake.

TheChester920 Yuhp. His name was actually "Eddie Nashton", if I'm not mistaken.

I loved the idea of the Reformed Riddler. It demonstrated the Batman actually *was* making a difference. That Gotham was getting better.

My honest thought: JIM CARREY WAS A GOOD RIDDLER! Sure, not the best. Sure, not exactly like the comics. Jim Carrey is an amazing actor. Movies such as Truman Show and The Mask show that. He tried his best, but THE MOVIE'S SCRIPT was the "not good" part. Also, the attire. Carrey had no chance. It was cringe as it gets. If they just gave him the regular suit, it would've been great. I'd say Jim was the best part of Batman Forever. Only Riddler should've made jokes, not Batman (such as, "Chicks did the car.)

I also have a fondness for Tommy Lee Jones in it. Granted, his character is written as a terrible Two-Face - probably the worst. But just on a theatrical level, given how 99% of the time TLJ plays a stony-faced straightman, it's fun watching him cut loose and try to match Carrey for pure scenery-chewing.

His Two face didnt even have a good side and a bad side, he was just an asshole really. But yes, lets agree that I did like seeing Tommy play a different character.

Frankly it just looks like he was having a ball with the part. And Carry with a three piece emerald green suit would've nailed it.

If they would've changed the attires, Tommy Lee Jones would've been an awesome Two-Face. His look in Batman Forever made him look like a cartoon. If he looked like he had serious burns (and Carrey had the regular suit, and not that ridiculous hair) their portrayals would've have been bad at all.

Frank Gorshin's portrayal of the Riddler in the 60s TV Batman was actually really good.Gorshin was a veteran film and stage actor.His wild laugh and charismatic personality,fine acting and wonderful vocal abilities made the Riddler a classic Batman villain.Stealing the limelight from Cesar Romero,s more subdued version of the Joker.

I don't care what you say, Jim Carrey will always be the Riddler to me. ;) Gotham's Nigma is almost as good.

I liked the 'reformed Riddler' plotline, just thought it a bit of a shame that they got tired of it since he does make such a good supporting character. I also appreciated his appearence in that old Batman film where the Penguin, the Joker, the Riddler, and Catwoman all team up. I thought it did a good job of highlighting his self-defeating nature, while still revealing the value of his wits. But yes, the name...stretches the bounds of credulity a bit and some of his riddles are truly ridiculous.

I like him better as a good guy lawyer instead trying to stay out of crime. DC Universe Online got it right.

My idea for him was to become a P.I., gains Batman and the GCPD's trust by solving impossible cases and then we learn Riddler was the one committing the crimes to "solve" them and put away rivals so he could rule Gotham's underworld unnoticed. (Then again, that was from a story i wrote in English class back before Batman '89 came out)

+RowdyRodimus That's basically the role he plays in DCUO. It's also mentioned as having been a portion of the comics, in the video you're commenting under (rewatch the section: Reformed Riddler). He becomes a hero, or hero informant, in his own way, leaving clues which lead heroes to the crimes, and villains responsible. In DCUO, he even gets captured at one point because of this.
