@@RhettThompsonFilm Do Panasonic make quite heavy cameras? I've got an OM-1.2 and that's 599g inc. battery and cards. I've just hired a G9ii (the first Lumix I've ever held) as I'm intrigued. It is a great camera for sure, but the weight difference (despite only being 60g) is apparent. I also think the ergonomics and the grip of the OM are nicer, and maybe that's why the weight difference, being negligible, is actually more noticeable? My Fujifilm X-H2 is the same weight as the G9ii but feels heavier because, IMO, the ergonomics are worse. Either way, both are fantastic cameras. For now, I'm staying put with the OM, but if Panasonic managed to stuff the guts of the G9ii into a smaller body (let's call it a GX9ii for now...), I'd be tempted to make the switch.

I shoot a lot of interviews, and it tends to overheat when shooting at 4k60 after about an hour BUT it doesn't do it if I swap out the battery for a dummy and power it by wall power. Great video! I appreciate the review. The one thing that "kind of bugs me" is that the top dials are easily moved when you accidentally hit it. All of a sudden, I'm shooting in an odd shutter angle! Ha Ha....Also, Quick question when you filmed the wedding and it began to overheat, were you filming continuously and for how long? I'm about to film a wedding with both the GH6 and the G9II and plan to rig with just a monitor and audio. Thanks!

It’s strange. I never really hit that button on the GH6 but it has happened a few times on the G9ii. Filming on and off, but not continuously. But regularly grabbing 4K clips. I truly think that the G9ii should not be used with any accessories if you can help it. I think it’s the monitor that pushed it over the edge because after I took the monitor off, it didn’t have any other problems but maybe it was my particular monitor or something else.

Beautifully explained, thank you. Where is a GH5 then if we compare?
@RhettThompsonFilm6 ай бұрын
Where is the GH5 in terms of what? What do you mean just in general?
@slows7286 ай бұрын
As opposed as many think, the GH5 has still the best overall details in video. The "6K" Open gate has the best organic look I have seen on m43. Each time I compare my GH5 to my G9II in Open Gate, I think something is not right on the G9II, like if big sharpening is added to mask the loss of details due to the digital moiré filter Panasonic use on this camera. You can use 4K 120fps on the G9II as opposed to the 60fps max of the GH5, but again the GH5 has the edge for details quality, the G9II lacks some details of the GH5 and looks rough. Note than if you don't crop, I don't think you will see the difference and it is not that bad, I found the S5II worse than the G9II about details rendering, at least in good light. On the G9II you also have 5,7K 30 and 60fps, on the GH5 you are limited to 6K open Gate or 6K photo 3:2/4:3 30 fps. But you can still crop inside the 6k files of the GH5 to get better resolution than 4K. Also the 4K of the GH5 is so good about details than it looks as good as the 5,7K of the G9II. But don't take me wrong, the G9II has much better AF in video, sometimes not as accurate than the GH5 with old lenses like the 45-175mm (the point of focus is sometimes not 100% accurate, you can see it when cropping), but overall much faster. The IBIS is also slightly better on the G9II, and of course much better when using the EIS crop mode. But the G9II has not only better AF and IBIS, it has a lot of features like Real time LUT, handheld high resolution (you can take one 100MP picture every 13 seconds), you can charge your camera on USB, you can use 4:2:2 even in 60fps, the G9II is also lighter, the DR is much better in video when using V-log, it has less noise in both photo and video, and the most important the colors are I think much better than the GH5, I really need to work hard on the GH5 to get the same colors in video. I would have loved to have a G9II with the same video engine than the GH5, but for now I keep both, and I hope the GH7 will have the same organic (but still full of details) look than the GH5 Open gate, but with the AF and colors of the G9II.

I got my G9M2 on April 1 (no fooling). As expected, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary and neither it, nor any other camera, is going to make a significant difference in your ability to make great photos. That will always be on the user. That said, it does slightly extend your ability to get acceptable photos in marginal conditions. It's lost a few things compared to the original G9, such as that great grip (especially with the battery grip), a slightly higher-mag EVF (0.83 v 0.8x--why didn't they increase the res to at least to 5.76?!), and things like post-focus/in-camera focus stacking (more reliable than in post). I've never had a problem with DFD (note--I'm not video-centric) and I'm still trying to "optimize" the new hybrid system, but it seems to be a bit better most of the time. Low-light performance has improved a bit as well (I shoot auto-ISO and have set no limits), although I'd have stuck with 20MP (even that's overkill) to further extend that capability. On paper, 100MP hand-held sounds impressive, but I don't think I've ever printed an 80MP image from the G9I, so nice to have, but not essential. I was shocked that the RAWs (and JPGs) are 2x the size of those from the G9I, given the modest MP increase, but they do look great. Bottom line: The G9M2's a great camera (although i'm eagerly awaiting the M3), and I'd recommend it if it fits your budget. If not, the G9 I's now an even greater bargain (especially used--mine's over six years old and still works great).

Contrast based auto focus is used in basically every single camera from every single manufacturer. It is still to this day, the quickest and most accurate single AF mode which is why everybody reverts back to it when not using continuous auto focus. Phase detect does have some utility when it comes to quickly acquiring a subject and consistently focusing on it, but it is not nearly as accurate in other situations. I never use the original and I understand it’s very different but man that Camera is a crazy good value these days which is why I included it in one of my previous videos about really good value budget Panasonic cameras. The high resolution modes are incredibly fun to me and actually do have some utility occasionally but mostly are just for fun .

I just... I don't see the point, it's essentially the same body as the S5ii. If shooting primes, the only thing the micro 4/3 format brings are negatives. You end up getting dramatically less dynamic range, and inferior depth of field control. For video use cases at base ISO I suppose The increased depth of field can be useful. The classic benefit is the telephoto lens size. I own Olympus, I just don't reach for it vs my FF kit.
@RhettThompsonFilm6 ай бұрын
Like I said in the video, while it is a fairly large camera for a micro for third camera it’s lighter than pretty much every professional body we’ve got in the lineup. Even the GH5 is heavier which leads me to think this camera is really nice, especially when paired with some of the high end lenses like the medium sized prime lenses and small or large zoom lenses. If you want a system that balances fairly well with large and small lenses the weight distribution for this is really nice and the gap of image quality and dynamic range between this and the full frame cameras is not as big as you might think, unless you are doing incredibly high contrast situations all the time, or directly comparing these cameras, one stop of highlights isn’t necessarily going to be noticeable. At least it isn’t to me most of the time of course the image, quality and low performance for the full frame is nice, but I do like the controlled depth of field, which still can easily blow out the background for 90% of things 90% of the time. To each their own though!
@dasaen6 ай бұрын
As an mft user, yeah the only thing keeping me in the system is the price to reach for telephoto. Maybe size too because I have very small manual lenses that are kind of easy to carry on em-5 bodies in my jacket pocket while I have the 100-400 out. I have used ff and been annoyed by the size but maybe now I’ll try again. It’s hard to upgrade, at the price of this camera I could get the r8 and a lens😂.
@conflictfree885 ай бұрын
As a long time mft shooter, this was basically the camera that kept me with the system. Would I have liked it to be smaller? Yes. Does it have everything else I need and in a body/lens combo that I can still shoot all day with? Also yes. My clients love the images, and I love how it handles. No real down sides for me. That said, I also have a huge collection of mft lenses. If I was to start from scratch today, it would be a challenging decision to make.
