Rollie: Gotta be an Explorer II with the white dial or a Milgauss with the blue dial and green crystal! Haven't owned either but love how they look.
@greatchalla3799
@greatchalla3799 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, I own an Explorer 11 polar and a Milgauss. Both very nice watches. The Milgauss is a heavier watch and the bracelet is so more comfortable. The Explorer is a much lighter watch and the older bracelet is kinda cheaply made compared to the Milgauss. If you’d like a better alternative to the Explorer. Pick up a Tudor Hydronaut with a carbon fibre dial it’s got better lume on the hands and a more substantial size screw lock crown. The bracelet is also comparable to the old Rolly except it’s got a jubilee link with a decent security clasp. Definitely a far better purchase if you’re looking to find a better price appreciation. The Explorer 11 is ridiculous in price, and IMO....it’s just not worth the $10,000 dealers are asking.

I am not really a Rolex guy, however, I do think they produce phenomenal timepieces. I am more into the Zenith and Doxa. If I were going to buy a Rolex, I would probably go with the Explorer II.

Rollie: Oysterquartz! What can I say, I am a quartz fan and I always like to go against the flow. I am not picky. I would take a 70's quartz date 5100 with the Beta 21 movement, the Datejust with the in-house 5035 movement, or the Day-Date 5055 movement. The in-house quartz movements are some of the most beautiful movements ever made. I actually prefer the clean lines and the down to business look of the all steel Datejust. I love the clean angular lines of the homage to the AP Royal Oak case. I would also very much enjoy all the Rolex "experts" claiming that my watch was a fake! For now I will remain very happy with my vintage Seiko watches. I even bought a Seiko 8123-7049 to get similar style case in my collection. I know it's gold, but it was only $8 plus shipping and a battery so I don't have a lot tied up in it. Still looking for one in stainless, but I like having both gold and stainless, depending how dressed up I am. A luxury I would not be able to afford with an Oysterquartz.

No one will notice your Rolex, because no one notices my omega? Flawless logic Dude (not!). Have you ever wondered why your new Omega loses value immediately, and your new Rolex doubles in value immediately? People who like watches - and here in Geneva there are many - WILL notice your watch, especially if it's a nice one.

The reason to get a Rolex is (or should be) the same reason you get any luxury watch, car, piece of art, etc. Because you can afford it, want it and will enjoy owning it. Nobody needs a luxury watch, thus the word 'luxury'. Certainly you're getting it for yourself because 99.999% of people won't notice or care what kind of watch you are wearing. If you insist on bringing it up, you deserve the reactions you get.

Rollie: I have an Explorer 2, white. The Wife bought it for me, new, in 2006. Wore it on the day she gave it to me and the next day. Have never worn it since then....it's like what? 15 years! Used to give it the occasional shake. Still has the plastic protectors on the watch. Forgot all about it until coming across this video. Will shake it when I get back.

I've had my GMT Master since the 90s and love it. I changed the bezel to black about 20 years ago since the original was completely worn and it's still one of the favs of my collection. And despite its value, I gave it to my 20-year-old son as a gift and he broke the band in literally a day. It was a cheap fix - like $20 and to his defense, the pin that broke was like 40+ years old - but I decided he wasn't ready for such an expensive watch so I am now the steward and will give it to him in time and until then, I gave him my Hamilton Frogman Titatinum since I figured it was a tougher watch.

Rollie: Explorer I. Absolutely love the simplicity of the dial and just its overall looks. Probably would be the only watch I'd ever think of buying for them. As for your comment about the service intervals, all brands seem to do that. I have an Omega, and when I bought it they told me the recommended interval was 5 years but to NEVER go more than 10. Well, I went to another AD and the guy was wearing his Speedmaster. He had had the watch for more than 15 years and said he never sent it in. Still was keeping time +/- 5 seconds/day. They're just trying to get extra money out of us with these ridiculous service intervals lol.

i wore several Rolex watches since 1986, and I bought 1 used and got it cheap, i overhauled it, it ran like a champ, the others were purchased new, but the problem is the company keeps upping the price, so when you look at a ...lets say a 15200 {date}, it was $1400 new in 1990...now the same watch sells for way more, so when you research the model, look at the year it was introduced, and if you want to buy one, offer the price it originally sold for...and you can find a great Rolex for a little above the price it sold for initially, I wore them so long, I got rid of them and made money..one watch I wore was a 15200, and when I sold it..i got 2000 grand for it..wore it 12 years and it served me well, I just got tired of them, now i have 2 Breitlings, an Oris BC3, a BLDR venture, and 2 Victorinox diver watches..but i will admit...if I find a Rolex thunderbird..im gonna snag it, I like the look of the rotating bezel on a datejust watch

Disagree with don't go modern. You can buy used modern and I think the features you get are worth it. Mainly the solid bracelets. Solid oyster blows away old hollow links and its not even close. Ceramics. Better lume, better movements and they will be vintage soon enough. 116600 216570 11670 all amazing examples of understated Rolex with all the modern goodies.

I own a Rolex Submariner that I bought new as a college student in Switzerland in July 1967. It has a 5513 calibre and cost 500 Swiss Frnacs or $117 US. The serial number indicates that it was made in 1966. Just to let you know how cheap things were in 1967, my entire trip to Europe for 11 weeks including the Rolex cost $850. I have had the watch serviced a number of times where the acrylic crystal was replaced each time. I recently had to replace the winding stem and crown but otherwise the watch works well and I wear it all the time. I don't dare using it under water because of it's age. However, all Rolexes or any mechanical watch can compare with a quartz watch or an apple watch as a chronometer. Rolexes are a symbol of craftsmanship and design that is no longer required to tell time. I wear the Rolex as a piece of jewelry more than as a watch. My children and my grandchildren wear apple watches or no watch at all and tell time on their iPhones. That is the way of progress.

To me it's hard to justify buying a new Rolex since Rolex is so famous that everyone copies their designs. You can easily find a watch that looks pretty much the same, with the same features, that is not a fake/replica for 1% or less than the price of a new Rolex. The logical side of my brain says "why bother with the Rolex, if your 1% or less look-a-like dies in 5 years toss it in the trash can with no worries and buy another". But I guess you don't buy a $12k submariner because of logic :-)
