In my opinion, the only disagreement I have with the tips is about Yari Ki. They're actually useful throughout the game because they're the fastest cavalry unit in Fall of the Samurai which mean they will reach enemy line faster than Saber cavalry when flanking. Another point is they will beat any cavalry unit including Generals in a 1v1 or even 1v2 due to being the only spear cavalry in Fall of the Samurai. And since they're the fastest cavalry in Fall of the Samurai as mentioned earlier, there's no unit that can outrun or kite them as they will catch them as soon as these units attempt to stop and shoot. The only problem they have is that they suffer lots of casualties when Auto Resolve due to being Traditional unit against gun unit. But if you fight manually, they're the better option compared to other modern cavalry unit as stated.

This is spot on, I don't even bother with saber cavalry. They're especially great for getting deep behind enemy lines and destroying artillery, which the AI tends to not defend well.

Not to mention that the Yari Cav can get to over 100 charge bonus under the right conditions. Those things are monsters

@@TuDeDaTe Yeah, sometimes the tactical decisions the AI makes are pretty absurd. Actually, in a recent game I was facing off against 3 enemy armies that were Cav heavy and do you want to know how they used their mobility advantage? Human wave attacks. My infantry was set up on a hill with with a dip at the bottom so I could overlap my fields of fire. Taking my artillery into account (the enemy had little) and they lost roughly five-hundred Cavalrymen before I took my first causality. It was like they the AI was a fan Kagemusha, and wanted to reenact the battle of Nagashino.

You can just double shot with your navy. First auto shot than switch fast to 1st person and shot again. Or you can repair and shot your ship with 1st person at the same time. You outgun your enemies quite a lot.

I'm far in my campaign (140 turns) and all AI has JUST stopped sending any wooden ships and have now FINALLY researched copper-plate. Unfortunately for them. I've had Iron and AP rounds before they had copper plate. Plus, they really like sending one ship at a time. Naval warfare in shogun 2 is more of a chore than a challenge. I started a naval battle and used the bathroom, and when I came back, they still weren't at the enemy on 4x speed.

Also, you can form "Death zones" when defending against a superior force in a siege battle. When they charge in, usually in one spot at your walls, pull back your infantery and form a "bubble" around the area they climb over your wall. The Ai wont be able to overpower you, as they come in waves or as single soldiers and its easier to gun them down. This works best for the very early level castles, wich just one wall, when also the enemy doesn't have good artillery or any artillery at all.

Even ai with advanced/modern units with breech loading/modern guns are defeatable by weaker units (levies) if you are smart enough

Arty is the reason why every settlement needs a cav card. Usually you have some woodlands to flank to the enemy rear without much trouble and im fine with loosing a cav unit to get rid of enemy arty.

Stretch out your line if you don’t have fire by rank but once you have it it’s nearly as good and is better for defending against charges

Stretching out your lines is useful for more volleys but makes them a lot more vulnerable to charges. So I usually don't do it. (And apparently its not realistic.) Plus, my 80 accuracy armstrong guns can route an army before they even reach me, lol. Which is something I recommend for all players cause artillery go boom. Find a province with the special building that adds accuracy + the other building that gives accuracy is like a 40 accuracy bonus to all troops. I easily get 1000 kills with my artillery. It does make the game quite easy. I've not lost a single battle. It doesn't help that the AI is still fielding early game troops with a few mid game troops. (They're still on wooden cannons, lmao.)

A Spagetti lines is always better than clustered ones! When you watch any competitive mp battles or tournaments, you will always see Spagetti lines, because firepower is everything. The more units are shooting at once, the less ppl can charge you. Additionally when you use defensive mode, the guys on the side can still shoot. And arty is less effective.

only the front rank firing is also unrealistic. muskets were so long specifically so you could have the front *three* ranks firing at the same time without any danger of hitting the men in front of you, some countries even got away with up to five ranks firing if they had the front rank or two ranks kneel. The popular "fire by rank" is also ahistorical, trying to fire while someone in front of you is reloading a muzzleloader is just asking for someone to knock the barrel of your gun off target or even get their hand shot off, they would normally fire by sections, with each group firing one after the other left to right or vice versa.

The yari Kachi are some of my favorite units, but later game modern will trade very well against any melee troops as long as you play defensively or at least can shoot at them before the melee starts. If you unlock kneel fire or have blacksmith upgrades on line infantry even they can do pretty well Also having long lines as infantry isn’t the most effective because turning is very slow, also from my experience (I haven’t tested it), models when hit tend to soak up the rest of the fire, instead of the remaining bullets passing through them and onto the next ranks, so thin lines tend to lose soldiers faster.

I always prefer Yari Ki over Sabre Cavalry for the same reason I prefer Yari Cav over Katana Cav.

I prefer revolver over any melee calvary. Don't need it against AI. I'll route any units dumb enough to attack my revolver calvary before they even get close. And the AI is very dumb so.

Sharpshooters are not worth it unless you’re talking about the unique variants like Tosa Riflemen. Low unit count and not that much additional range, plus the lack of light infantry tactics stance from Empire/Napoleon, really makes them just a more expensive and less capable line infantry. The Traditional Dojo is always worth having in your primary military recruitment provinces even if you’re modernizing, as it gives an additional recruitment slot and garrisons for defense during sieges. I personally only rate the Market chain in wealthy provinces. The Inn gives more happiness and some money, and can save you the money and slot you’d need on a police station to prevent rebellions in traditionalist provinces. It is always worth it to modernize. Always take the European trade mission, preferably British if you can get it.

The horse archers are a no no unit. They get destroyed easily by any musket or melee units. I would replace those with normal archers instead. It's one of the top 5 worst units. Same for the sabor cav. Revolver cav is a lot more powerful and can route a whole unit alone with minimal deaths.
