Small tip for Saga start is to wait a few turn till your ally Hirado makes an alliance with his other neighbor (Fukuoka I believe), Discover Fukuoka with your agent, then declare war on Fukuoka and ask Hirado to join, 9 out of 10 times Hirado will not honor the alliance and breaks it on their own, you can mop up northern Kyushu a little bit earlier this way

I think this is my favorite clan in FotS, I love their army colors and how convenient it is to raise the modern army for them, early income is great too with all the foreign trade. I think the only things I'm not too keen on are the lack of unique units, and all the early game island hopping. But I guess starting with guns makes up for the lack of unique units anyway.

Hirado declared war on me on turn 3, so that made things quite easy. I think they will take the opportunity when your army is on the islands, so leave a proper garrison in Nagasaki. After you take Hizen you will probably also have to face the other clans on Kyosho, but thats pretty good to be honest. But there is one exception to that from my experience. Like already said in the video, the Satsuma can make a really good ally. Almost too good. In my campaigns they steamrolled half the map, so keep in mind that they can get very strong and you dont want to face them at that stage. Might be a good idea to destroy them in the early game.

I made sure to attack satsuma right after i conquered the islands. I find they leave the province with the gunsmith under defended. Nothing better than snatching that. Your starting ally works as a shield until they get stomped on.

I recommend putting your infantry in only two ranks deep and using kneel fire. Since only the first two lines shoot, you can have the whole unit firing.

This is not usually how I use my armies, I just lined them up so I could get the easiest shots of all units. I also don't usually use suppressing fire, that was a miss-click.

The army comp that I tend to go with is along the lines of, 1 General, 4 Revolver Cav, 11-12 Shogunate/Imperial/Republican Infantry, 3-4 Armstrong Guns. Obviously you can put in some Shogunate/Imperial/Republican Guard Infantry and Western Units in as well, but they're limited so I don't use them for this example army.

Henry1234 God I WISH I had Armstrong guns... I'm only just starting to build the tier I need to recruit Shogunate infantry, while I research better artillery. Ideally though, I make my own armies fairly balanced. A general; 6 infantry; 2 sharpshooters; 2 revolver cav; 2 carbine cav; 2 armstrong guns; 2 Gatling guns. Naturally, that's the ideal composition and it's rare I'll ever have it. Be easier if my worthless vassal would build a freakin' train station. Always build arty in a province with a firing range. If you can, get a province with a gunmaker and a firing range for your infantry/arty and an armourer and drill square for cavalry, so when you've fired off all your ammo, you can slam into the enemy with enough force to make even yari ki blush.

ah for the force I would go with in this case is 1 general 4 cav of what ever you got 6 line, 3 skrimishers, 4 guns for firepower and the melee build I would go 1 general 4 sword, 4 spear, 4 skirmish which is bows etc or guns 4 cav and 3 guns for artillery that force is a generic all rounder effective force.

Dear Mr.SmartDonkey I have found Your Videos to be a massive boon to my gameplay. Among other early game moves such as destroying one's Navy for most clans. I never would have guessed to destroy the Dojo as Saga, as I find early game Yari Katchi spam to be nearly unstoppable in the absence of castles or ridgelines, due to the superior Moral, Melee Stats, decent affordability, and substantially due to Armour. My reasoning for the last one is from controlled testing in custom battles on Rice Fields, and found that Small Arms mechanics are very similar to Archery mechanics, in that: 1, most shots missed are from range over/undershooting, (partially negating the effects of Loose Formation due to being larger front to back, but still very useful when taking flanking fire/meatshielding) and are of Lesser in BOTH Accuracy AND Armour Penetration between about 10 less than Maximum Range and roughly at just outside of Fire-Bomb Throwing Range, with another "Blind Spot" below 2/3 Fire-Bomb Throwing Range. Whilst Armour has a meaningful effect at All Ranges against Archery against Small-Arms/Gatling Guns/Shrapnel Shot/ it is only effective at the "Blind Spot" Ranges, with a minimum of 3 Armour to reduce Arrow Casualties at "Blind Spot" ranges by about 50% and a minimum of 4 Armour to reduce Gunpowder Casualties by about 50% in the "Blind Spot" Ranges. Armour isn't as noticeable against early-game musketry because most early-game Small-Arms units will only fire about 2 shots in the time it takes to close the distance, with the typical firing distances conveniently lining up outside of their "Blind Spots" whilst although mid-late game units fire fast enough to fire in the "Blind Spots" as well, their general capabilities render frontal attacks impractical. 2, Moral is heavily effected by the number of ranks destroyed/heavily damage or pierced, almost as much as overall casualties, but not as much as flanking. 3, Spaghetti lines (less than 2 ranks deep) shoot less accurately than standard/3 ranks deep (but not enough to warrant not using them entirely) Likewise units in Loose Formation or firing at odd angles will fire less accurately. 4, Units (targeted or otherwise) will fire at the end of the enemy unit's line closest to themselves, unless nearly parallel, thus to improve accuracy in line battles it's best to have units (especially artillery) fire at the units further from them, thus missing shots into the opposing Center, and leave a different unit to attack the stragglers at the extreme flanks of the line. 5, The Infamous "Tosa Shuffle" is caused by a unit replacing the fallen by file instead of by rank, typically exacerbated by losses to the flank of a unit as described previously. It's cure is to deploy one's line in Guard Mode in at least 2 continuous ranks Squarely Parallel to the enemy front or Squarely Perpendicular to the enemy flank, Suppresive Fire is of great utility in surviving the initial engagement and is best deployed by a unit firing down the length of the enemy line to suppress multiple units, thereby freeing up the troops in one's center to fire for effect. 6, Up to 2 Gunpowder units when stacked like your method of using Oda Yari Ashigaru can give fire on the same frontage, when grouped and in guard mode they can also FIRE IN MELEE! 7, Date Bulletproof Samurai are only Bulletproof against Shogun 2 Small Arms, against FOTS Small Arms (oddly including Matchlock Katchi and Revolvers) they behave no differently from any other High Armour Value unit such as Naginata Samurai, Katana Samurai ect.

Donkey, I'm wondering if you could make a video analyzing all resources and economic improvement structures in Fall of Samurai, like which one should you invest first, which one should save for last? Because from Total War forum they seem to insisted that Gold and Silver mine in Fall of Samurai isn't worth prioritizing which is a 180 departure from vanilla game where you'd want to invest in those gold province ASAP. I just remember this when I realized that Tsushima, the enemy of Saga, has gold mine on its island.

Sometimes in your army composition you can use the Sharpshooters. They're not as good as tosa riflemen, but their 150 range do its job. They're most useful when defends a siege. I've completed the republic campaign as a Saga recently and before RD i bribed the city of Wakasa, far away from my native teritory. I filled it with sharpshooters and defended for almost 50 turns. In the field they have use for securing your flanks. I usually leave them in fresh conquered town to defend it and keep public order and go further

While I agree with that, I'm really just making an army that fits the theme, while sharpshooters do fit in there, so do all other gun units I showed and I personally don't like Sharpshooters that much. If there was a late-game equivalent for them I'd be more inclined to put them in.

I really want to like those little guys, but they're just not cost effective. So I every now and then I have to do a Tosa campaign just so I can fill an army with Tosa Riflemen instead. Then I don't even bother to research kneel fire. If anyone has any good tips on how to make an army of sharpshooters effective, I'd love to hear them.

I never meant the whol army filled with sharpshooters. I was meaning the 2 units of them in the army. Of course when playing as Tosa you can put tosa riflemen instead of other firearm units and they will do their job even better than line infantry (about 400 kills per unit during the defensive siege). Eitherway when you cannot recruit tosa riflemen due to not being Tosa - line infantry is your mainline force.(Choshu Kihetai kicks 37 types of shit out from almost anyone guys.) I'm looking forward for the Aizu overview with they pretty all own units.

In the early game when choosing between Levy Infantry and Spear Levy, I always choose Spear Levy, reason being the Levy Infantry can only really get 1,5 volley off before you get into melee with them at which point you'll slaughter them. That said, I'd also recommend going for Line Infantry fairly early on, they're a massive improvement on Levy Infantry and can even be used in the late game when upgraded. You only need the first level of the modern unit recruitment building for them as well so you can literally get them after a handful of turns.

I just started my own campaign I find it is better if u covert to shogunate straight off the bat. Cz the two islands u gona conquer are shogunate, u will have less issue with maintain public order. When u return ur ally should already broken alliance with u but not declare war on u. However it is better hire some units at main town just in case. Also ur relation ship with other imperial clan is indifferent not friendly, they will go on u if they have the spare strength anyways. I guess that is why imperials always lose too much infighting. Choshu is fighting satsuma in my campaign now XD

Actually I'd advise to keep traditional dojo and instantly get 2 yari ki. After you got them is the point you remove the dojo. 2 yari ki +parrot gun with some levy support this early is enough to roll over pretty much everything nearby clans can muster against you. It's gonna hit your pocket tho but for me it's worth it.

On Legendary difficulty I'd prefer to have a few more spear levy over Yari Ki this early on, as you said, it hits the pocket pretty hard, for each Yari Ki you can almost afford 2 Spear Levy, and you can't really afford many Spear Levy if you have two Yari Ki, so you have no way to protect your Yari Ki or your cannon. Early on numbers are much more important than a few cavalry units.

Going to war with Hirado is quite simple actually. They usually made alliance with some random clan around turn 3. Declare war to that clan and Hirado will join on their war against you most of the time. You won't get the penalty for attacking them this way.

British? Pfft...I have to go team America on this one. Barring the bias that i am an American (so they always have a place in my heart) the bonus they give you is also +5 artillery accuracy. This means that as Saga you can rely a gunsmith/firing range/clan bonus of +45 accuracy to all artillery in the game as Armstrong guns only start with 30 as a base number. That's a +150% increase in killing power while a gatling gun (base is 20) becomes 65 which is tripled with a +225% increase in killing power. Icing on the cake is that like the French who give a +5 bonus to rifle accuracy....both of these buffs are immediate and global upon accepting the military mission so you dont even have to build the trading district...but hey the money is good.

Donkey, one thing you didn't mention is that you need those starting navy to stick around for a few turns or at least killing that fleet to the north - which came from Tsushima first (this's thing you get wrong in the vid too, it's Tsushima to the north-most island who start as your enemy, not the Goto island to the west, they're neutral with Shogunate allegiance). Else said fleet will begins bombarding your trade port with impunity the moment you end your turn. And because most of your money at the start of Saga campaign come from that port, they'll bombed your economy to oblivion from turn 1 because RNGesus favor AI.

I never said you start at war with the Goto. I said you start at war with the occupants of the island to the north 3:10 I even show it in the diplomacy screen later. The camera just hadn’t caught up yet. I also clearly suggested keeping your fleet around. Might want to pay a little closer attention to what I’m saying next time around.

If I'm wrong I admit I'm wrong. But, back to Saga, it's like Tokugawa in an aspect that RNGesus can screw you over in the first turn by "Fun and Engaging game mechanic" (sarcastic term for ship's magazine detonation originated from World of Warships). Same as Metsuke bribing Oda in Tokugawa's campaign. I normally hold off building any navy until I get HE shells for exactly that reason, but Saga? not a chance but pray RNGesus not dispensing "Fun and Engaging game mechanic" on you. Guess that's the cost for having Parrot gun from the start.

True, but due to the economy you already had in the game you probably already have a navy capable of breaking said blockade, and if you open the game with an auto resolve battle against the tsushima navy you will easily win, hell, it could even get rid of one of your ships bosting your income and crippling thier naval forces.

Sorry to necro. When you go Republic, you lose all previously recruited Shogunate/Imperial Units. However, you gain access to Republican Infantry, which is basically the same thing. Republican Guard Cavalry is shit, Republican Guard Infantry is good but capped, but most notably you don't have access to Ishin Shishi or Shinsengumi anymore. You need to be building a police station in every province to help with conversion (but don't upgrade them beyond magistrates before realm divide). You also need as many Ninja as possible, because as a Republic they will be your ONLY way to deal with enemy Geisha. Your own Geisha can't "enchant them" (big sad) and Foreign Veterans refuse to challenge women to single combat. Ninja however have no such scruples.

The army comp that I tend to go with is along the lines of, 1 General, 4 Revolver Cav, 11-12 Shogunate/Imperial/Republican Infantry, 3-4 Armstrong Guns. Obviously you can put in some Shogunate/Imperial/Republican Guard Infantry and Western Units in as well, but they're limited so I don't use them for this example army.

Yeah, for sure, also I don't like that there's 0 unit diversity between clans, the clan traits are pretty pointless too, all clans feel the same and as you said, battles suck. No formations, units route after losing a dozen men, things like that.

Don't the Saga get access to US marines? The 'murricans are better shots than the brits, if a little worse in melee.

That's actually something I should've gone more in depth on. You're wrong about US Marines being better shots, they're actually the ones that are better in melee than Brits, but the Brits are better shots. However, allying with the US does get you a +5 accuracy bonus to artillery which is more in line with the Saga's strengths so I'd still recommend going with the US.

well the French at that time were the pioneers of military thought after all it has only been 30 years after the Napoleonic wars

so tactics sure but that doesn't stop the fact that at this point the british are basically the only ones with ample supply of high quality gunpowder allowing for training with live ammunition resulting in faster load speed it's not until repeating rifles became commonplace that this advantage was nullified

The french marine is the best ingame because they use much modern gun, the chassepot rifle and the french were leading in the military world until they're defeated by prussian in 1870s

You can get French and US as Shogunate, and you can get British and US as Imperial.

ah so the US is equal oppratunity but the british and French are allegiance required. thanks for clearifying that. though I had yet to see the AI take advantage of the matter and employ the lot especially the French for the shogunate forces. I got two of the three achevements for there ironclads etc. I guess I need to get a shogunate play though going to get the French one.
