I had a heartbreaking experience evolving elderly people and public transportation in Korea. It only happened once, but it was quite shocking because giving the seat to an elder is just common sense for me. While I was in Korea for a semester, I took a red bus to Seoul from Yongin and it was totally full. No seats available. Then, an elderly lady who was probably around 70 got on the bus and the people who were next to her did not get up. I was shocked because she was clearly having trouble to balance herself and nobody seemed to care that she would be standing for almost an hour. So, I got up and got her attention to seat where I was. She thanked me so much that she offered to share the seat with me!

I did this in Thailand! The BTS Skytrain was packed, we were practically sardines. An elderly woman managed to squeeze in after a few people got off at a stop and she was absolutely exhausted. She was sweating, trying to calm her breathing and it didn’t help that she was carrying two bags of groceries. No one budged from their seat or anything. Mind you, there are SEVERAL signs of giving up your seat for the elderly and pregnant on the train. I didn’t know the Thai words for “take my seat”, so I had to gently tap her arm, got up, and gestured towards my seat. She said, “kob-khun-nah-kha” (thank you very much) and had the brightest smile on her face. :D
@chibeechan6 жыл бұрын
That's SO NICE of you. I had somewhat of a similar experience except the ending was a bit difference LOL..I was in socal taking a local bus when at one of the stops, there was an elderly man having trouble lugging his shopping cart (the ones most elderly people have) onto the bus so I got up from my seat, helped him carry it on board, and gestured him to my seat. I believed him to be grateful as he kept smiling and shaking my hands with both of his. When my stop came at the station, he got off. My friend and I then proceeded to get off and to my surprise, he was waiting for me. He began asking me questions in mandarin: what's my number; how old am I; am I a student; etc. He even began wrapping his arm around my waist and keep in mind this was when I was 18 and he was around 60+... After I somehow managed to escape the situation, my friend was telling me he was ogling at me *shudder* - I didn't know how to react to the situation atm I was too shocked and yes, I do regret not doing something about it - I was wearing normal shorts and a sweater, nothing provocative

I see drinking in Korea is like being a young kid in art musem. Full of rules, no fun. Like...stand straight, tilt your head 90 degrees, hold the cup with two hands. etc.. Seems it takes all the fun away which is implemented with drinking. Instead of enjoying your time , all the time you're asking yorself "Have I messed sth up yet or no?"

Honestly, as long as you're humble and try your best to communicate in Korean or English, S. Koreans will be happy to help you. In the Korean language, if you skip using honorifics to strangers or older people, it sounds like you're cussing them out (but you don't need to use honorifics with friends or kids). It's just how the language works.

Okay. So in korean, they have different consonants that make sounds that are really similar, like tense, aspired, and plain for example. The sound p(ㅂ)and pp(ㅃ) sound almost exactly the same to foreigners and could cause a lot of confusion. Its not that hard to learn if you put effort into it; the korean language was made to be easy to learn.
@ziziari80455 жыл бұрын
Honestly what i do when I'm learning is repeat them over and over out loud to myself until i can pick up the distinction between the two. Like the first sounds in 빵 and 바나나. The ㅂ is a softer p sound at the beginning of the word and the ㅃ is more aspirated and more like an actual p sound.

I’m from America, but I get really offended too if someone grabs me around my waist or my shoulder. I also wait for people to extend their hand first for me to shake it. I’d really prefer if we didn’t have to do either and I could just wave hello or goodbye. And I always get my moms utensils and napkin out at lunch. It’s not a cultural thing here, but I always try to be extra respectful because she’s elderly now, and has had a hard life. And there are some restaurants in my town where you can go to the counter and pay. :)

@crystaljones97006 жыл бұрын
I agree. I’m American and where I live we always give up seats to elderly, pregnant women, children or even temporarily injured or disabled people. We give them carts at grocery stores, hold doors, etc. It’s just the right thing to do. Something some people may want to keep in mind is that introverted people, like me, honestly do not reach to shake hands or approach people in general unless the other person does it first. Now once we become good friends we may initiate because we actually know you but not before. I don’t like to be purposely touched by strangers period. Accidental touch because we’re in a crowded space doesn’t thrill me but I get that it’s unavoidable and no harm is intended so it’s okay. But I’m actually very sensitive to rough materials, overly strong scents, etc., so if there is no reason that requires a stranger to be in my personal space just don’t. Lastly, having seen this first hand at least twice now, it’s important to be mindful that many people on the autism spectrum do not respond well to unanticipated physical contact with family members much less strangers. I’ve seen meltdowns happen because of situations like this and people looking at the autistic person like something is wrong with them. Uh no, they’re fine, they just don’t want you touching them!

A lot of people are complaining about how Koreans are so 'cold' and how they don't make an effort to understand foreigners mistakes. I totally understand that it isn't always convenient to have people judging you without you knowing the reason. However I want to point out that in Asia, people are very reserved compared to America or Europe. I think we shouldn't get offended about their 'misunderstandings'. It's really just cultural. Also, in Korea everyone tends to respect their surroundings, while in France for example, people don't even care if someone is struggling to cross the road. Please don't get offended, there's always exceptions in everything, and that was just my opinion.

Anilie sharma Yeah,Touching a person is ok in India but it is kinda weird. Pretty much in Asia a lot Of ppl dont say sorry,thanks,excuse me or bless You.. I live in Canada and whenever I never said Thank U or Sorry for doing a simple mistake ppl just stared at me thinking that I was rude or something..

About the hands and touching, it's the same in Arabia... it's just due to respect towards the lady.

You mean, Muslim ladies, but it's really hard to stay away from men do you don't get touched, but I got used to it😛
@Emma-mg4xk4 жыл бұрын
@@puRplellama9289 Yes ... sometimes things get even harder because many of us (Muslim women) work in environments that are full of men and sometimes we can not be as comfortable as we want and we always have to keep our distance from "non-mahram" men، of course not only physically but also verbally and behaviorally ... Non-mahram men are men with whom Muslim women have no right to shake hands or have physical contact
