My foot print is very minimal because I reuse ♻️ things and repurpose things until it’s literally can’t be reused for anything. As I’ve stated in my first post I grow things which is good for the environment and it’s organic and healthy. Anyways we all have choices and I’m living it up my life ready for many situations. I've been making my own dishwashing spray for over a year. 32 ounce spray bottle, dissolve 1 tablespoon of borox in 24 ounces of hot water, add an ounce of dawn platinum and then top the bottle to the fill line slowly. Just spray it on the dishes, wipe them clean with your cleaning sponge of choice and rinse. That makes one ounce of Dawn last 10-14 days of washing for me and uses less water than filling the sink and adding dish soap. For pans that are really bad, spray it on and let it sit about ten minutes, then spray it again and wipe it clean. Citric acid is another thing that I have stocked up on as it can be used to replace lemon juice in recipes and doubles as a cleaner. Citric acid and baking soda will have the same effect as baking soda and vinegar, you just have to add the water to kick start the reaction.

@4 Tress I like your comment and a fair comment at that. How do apartment dwellers aquire ashes? where such an article is are uncommon. Unless one goes camping or invited to a cook out. It is unlikely to find a container of that at the local Seven Elleven, (would kingsford coal work? ) Obviously, I forgot how resourcefull I used to be when I was forced by a prestigious developer to shelter in my car. A neighborhood Forest Preserve or pick nick ground has an ash can ! A great resource for ash. Just use a empty large jelly jar, funnel, and a scoop, & with a breathing mask on, or scarf, scoop the ash from the ash can or from a grill, & pour it into the jar. If you need to make fire, and don't have a book of matches handy or other means, but you have some dry cotton and some ashes, and two flat narrow strips of wood, you could peel the cotton apart in your hands until you have a smaller spread of cotton and pour a tiny amount of ash inside your smaller cotton spread. Blend the ash together in your hand (or use nitril gloves or disposable gloves) to work the ash into the tiny cotton fibers and roll it between the palms of your hands until you have a filthy grayish cottony joint, or tightly rolled cotton sprig. Make extras and store in a ziplock bag. Take two dry pieces of smooth flat wood or shim sticks in your hands and sandwhich together the ash cotton sprig and vigorously rub-roll the cotton sprig till the hard friction forms heat and you see the cotton begin to smoke, then take the smoking cotton sprig in your fingers and add dry wood shavings from a pencil sharpener (the kind of pencil sharpeners purchased from the "Dollar [& a Quarter] Tree Store." 😆! ) And then gently blow on the smoking sprig as it begins to flame up and this will be the embers as you add dry twiggs above the burning shavings to build a fire, and then add kindling wood all done inside a stone walled fire pitt or out door grill. (And use Baking soda as a fire extinguisher.) Be careful not to do this on a windy day.

I spent maybe $20 (canadian) total on a stainless steel razor and a box of 100 blades over a year ago. Still going strong. For a delicious and amazingly tender canned beef, try a can of Keystone beef. It's fully cooked, so pour it into a fry pan along with some powdered beef gravy, then pour it over rice or mashed potatoes (or baked potato). You'll like it so much you'll get more. We buy ours at Kroger, but you can get it on Amazon. It has a 5 year shelf life from the day it's canned. One more super important thing to store, and that is sweets. We're all basically addicted to sugar. Vacuum seal dark chocolate chips in jars. The color will change over time, but that's only "sugar flowers" and they do not change the taste.

For that sweet tooth, a more natural alternative that has no experation date is honey as it may go hard, depending how it is stored, it never expires. Although it should be recommended not to store honey in plastic containers as the plastic will leach unwanted chemicals from the plastic and I noticed the plastic becomes brittle with age. Best to store in (hot water sanitzed) glass jars, with a food grade wax coated card board insert under metal screw top lid for best results. Ideal comfort food and sugar substitute in recipes.

Alternative products. Old fashioned tooth powder, dry powder in about 2oz containers lasts longer than toothpaste especially on the shelf. General purpose cleaning fluid (UK version is stardrops) cleans anything from vinyl floors and windows to crockery and cutlery and it's cheap usually less than £1. Laundry bleaching powder, mixed into warm water gives a decent bleach for general cleaning and sanitation or sprinkled on dampened stains even lifts blood/oil stains from concrete. Mylar sheeting as used by indoor gardeners 😏 great for creating blackout sun shades to help reduce the temperature in summer but also reflect heat back into a room in the winter, another use is to make gas-proof custom size Mylar bags by sealing with hair straighteners (I made one for my air rifle in a storage unit bunch of O2 absorbers and it's protected against the elements.

I have so many suggestions from things I've run across, and developed myself, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Though I don't recall seeing sea salt on the list, as the additional minerals and electrolytes are far superior to table salt. And the lower level of sodium doesn't hurt either. And yes, it can be found with iodine. Mixing sea salt with equal amount of table salt is stronger recommended, as it makes the sea salt stretch. I also make my own charcoal for not only my grill, but also for a forge I'll be building soon, and plenty is to be used for water filtration. As I write this and think about many other projects my family is working on, I am regretting not making videos to share with others looking for different ways to deal with different circumstances. If only I had more time...

@Charlena Cole Nearly everything someone's never done before seems confusing or scary or unusual in the first attempts. It's just because of the newness and the uniqueness of exploring new frontiers and expanding your horizons in such a new way. Once you get the hang of it, everything will seem so familiar to you, even if you've never thought about trying it before. I know that it may not exactly make sense to you right now, but think of it this way... Suppose you've never baked anything before in your life. The first time may seem almost uncomfortable, as you comprehend that the act of baking is more science than art, and just throwing pretty looking, nice smelling, or good tasting ingredients together will more often than not result in ugly foods that may end up hurting your teeth and stomach if you attempt to eat. But once the basic concepts are fully grasped, baking like cooking should come to you like a second nature, and you can throw things together like a mad scientist and still have great results. Plus it's fun. My family has been blessed by my mom's almost supernatural gift of off the cuff food preparation, meanwhile on my dad's, an impressive mechanical aptitude. It's amazing to see it passed down to my kids that build or repair something they've never touched before, then throw something new together that even a picky eater can enjoy. A spirit is unconquerable if the heart, mind, and body are strong. Your willingness and desire to strengthen yourself is your greatest limiting factor. Whether you turn out to be bulletproof or a marshmallow is mostly in your own hands. Seek wisdom, guidance, and knowledge first. AND DON'T FORGET SELF DISCIPLINE! A great teacher doesn't hurt. Not a good one, but a great one. The difference is life and death.

All good points. You can go to a dollar store and stock up on inexpensive versions of the toiletry items you use on a daily basis: toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, bath soap, shampoo, hair ties, disposable razor blades... Be advised that conditioner and lotions will not store all that long. Aim for at least 6 months' worth of toiletries for your household. Buy now at the current price or wait until you run out of these products and have pay a lot more in the future. Unless your income also rises as prices rise, you will be glad to have a stockpile at home that was purchased at lower cost. Stock up on any non-prescription tablets and powders that you use daily. You do not want to run out of or be priced out of Pepto-Bismol tablets or Naproxen tablets or multivitamin tablets or cough drops or whatever your household uses often. Avoid stocking up on the liquid or gel forms of non-prescription meds because they degrade a lot sooner than the solid versions. Liquid bleach and many of the expensive household cleansers will not store much longer than 6 months before degrading. Gallon jugs of white vinegar and big boxes of baking soda will store a lot longer and make good kitchen and bathroom cleansers. And homemade cleansers cost a lot less too and are less toxic to toddlers and pets. The prices of big bags and buckets of wheat grain have gone way up. Now would be the time to stock up on alternative grains/products: white rice, dry pasta made from white flour, rolled oats, freeze-dried corn kernels, wild rice and quinoa. Only buy the grain products you know your family will eat. Just re-package these foods, in Mylar with oxygen absorbers, for long-term storage if you expect food shortages and price increases to last longer than the next 12 months. Or stock up on #10 cans of rolled oats, white rice and dried pasta. The Home Storage centers run by volunteers from the LDS church tend to have the best prices on long-term food storage and there is even an online store where these foods are sold in six-can lots with a modest cost to ship. Find at: www.providentliving. org This site sometimes quickly sells out of its stock. Currently you can also find #10 cans of other kinds of long-term food storage at WinCo stores and at lower cost than these products sell for on Amazon. I have bought #10 cans of scrambled egg mix, biscuit mix, powdered milk and "super cans" of freeze-dried lasagna at WinCo recently. In most counties, fresh meat and poultry are luxury items and are expensive. Americans have been spoiled for decades with low prices for meat and poultry. If you must buy canned beef, pork, chicken, tuna, salmon and sardines, buy only the amount you know will use before the flavor and texture go off. It is not a bargain if it spoils or becomes unpalatable before you can use it. If you have a freezer and a generator to power it during a power grid outage, you could stock up on discounted fresh or frozen meat and poultry and re-package the food in Food Saver bags to prevent freezer burn. We have used frozen meat packaged in Food Saver bags five years after purchase and could not tell the difference from recently purchased frozen meat. Or you could pay more to get those #10 cans or Mylar pouches of freeze-dried meat that can store for 20 years. With rising inflation, that $60 #10 can of freeze-dried, diced beef or $50 can of diced chicken meat may seem like a real bargain when you open it 10 years from now.

Thank you Linda!!! I meet a lot of people in my area who bought into the shipping and worker shortage excuse!!! They walk through the stores doing normal grocery shopping as they’ve done for decades, because they expect the empty shelves to go away and the abundance of the past restored!!! I want to shake them a bit to wake them up, but of course I can’t!!! What would it take to convince such people? My next door neighbor and some other neighbors have extra freezers and loads of storage that are empty, because they think this is a temporary event we are experiencing!!! I have done everything I could to encourage these folks to prep, but they look at me as if I am over reacting, so I just left them alone!!! I now keep my prepping to myself!!!

Now would be a good time to evaluate how you do things - it saves a lot of money. I make liquid laundry soap for about 20 cents a gallon. Instead of Lysol, I mix bleach with water in a spray bottle. I am still using an 8 pack of paper towels I bought more than a year ago. I bought an 18 pack of wash cloths that we use as napkins, all old clothes and towels are cut up and used for rags, my weekly grocery ads I use for cleaning glass and mirrors. Windex is replaced with a vinegar and water solution. We have been conditioned to rely (and spend) on products that we can readily make ourselves for a fraction of the price. None of these things are very time consuming to make, and a lot of them use common ingredients you probably already have in your house.

One of the most important things in my household is having an alternative toilet with supplies for it. We have a couple little folding toilets with garbage bags and kitty litter but probably need to bolster that setup I'm mostly worried about earthquakes, fires, floods and volcanoes here, but earthquakes more than anything. Bathroom supplies are imperative Also I put a 2ish gallon disposable water jug with a spigot in our bathroom because we've had so many issues with the water being shut off for repairs. That's reminded me how much worse it would be to have handwashing issues in a natural disaster. We have water cubes but no way to lift them up to washing height

Watch sales and use coupons for household and personal items. Double their use by mixing with water. Despite getting my detergent (and most household and toiletries) for free for the last decade, I still pour half into an empty container and fill both with water. Water down Dawn and put it into a pump or spray bottle. Put condiments and toiletries into food-safe wide mouth condiment squeeze bottles to slow down their pours and make them last 3x as long. Use rags or microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. Mix toothpaste with mouthwash and put it into a glass pump bottle (use just enough mouthwash so it can easily be pumped out) so you can make it last 3/4 times as long. FYI the dollar store sells liquid Colgate toothpaste in the same size as the supermarkets for those that don't want to make such a mixture. Make your own cleaning supplies - there are tons of recipes online - for example, cost pennies to make an all-purpose spray ... in a spray bottle mix equal parts water and rubbing alcohol and add a drop of Dawn. As for razors - they are always on sale and when they are there is always a matching $4 off coupon (normally for the actual razor pack, not the refills). The reason is that the money is made with the refills, not the initial cost of the razor. I never buy refills, I just keep buying the packs of the entire things) and if you get yourself a bunch of coupons (ask friends, family, neighbors, co-workers as most people don't use them), you can get yourself a bunch of razors in packs of 3 or 6 for $2-$4 (after coupon). That's your stock-up price so you buy enough to last until the next sale with a matching coupon (which usually happens 1/2 times per month). Razors used to be free and one of the easiest things you can get for free. But they have stopped allowing shoppers to use both a digital and insert coupon together - meaning there was normally a digital worth $4 and an insert coupon worth $4 making your $7.99 pack of 3 razors free. As a female, I only purchase men's razors because they work a lot better. There may be some readers not familiar with digital coupons (based on where they live and shop). If you shop CVS, you know about extra care bucks and you know you can also get a lot of free razors and many other things if you know how to shop there. There are many youtube videos as well as web pages that show you how. Most people think I'm crazy using coupons and stockpiling items. However, those same people knew who they could come to during the pandemic when they could not get the things they needed! Serious coupon people never get caught paying full price - not in a pandemic and not during inflation either. I could live several years off of my stockpile and especially combined with the methods I apply as described above. Little things add up and these add-ups help to offset the things you have to purchase that you can't do anything about.

Tough to store shampoo/conditioner, dishwashing liquid. I rinse out those tossed out laundry soap containers with a plastic faucet on them I find at laundromats and refill them individually with the afore mentioned items. And keep only one dish washing liquid bottle to refill. The laundry soap container with faucet, is a great way to store large amounts of a liquid, as well as dispense the right amount without spillage. I have one I place over a counter and refill into a smaller container for easy access. And even one I rinsed out and filled with boiling hot water from a kettle to swish and dump out at let stand upside down a few days in a dish rack until the inside walls are free of water droplets. With a funnel, I poured automotive oil into it. A handy solution on those rare occasions to add some oil, the faucet spiggot is great for dispensing the right amount of oil with little drip.
