The UK version has always been uncut, too. Apparently, the main thing missing from the US version are Christian Slater's cameo scenes as the security guard who Austin hypnotizes. It was over allegations at the time of the movie's release that he had abused his wife, and so his scenes were cut in America. But for some reason, not from the PAL releases. Fun fact, Mike Myers was a fan of Susanna Hoffs and the Bangles, and even owns a Rickenbacker 350 Susanna Hoffs Limited Edition electric guitar. Upon meeting her, they created the group "Ming Tea", and Hoffs brought on board singer, songwriter, Matthew Sweet. Also, Susanna presented Myers to her then boyfriend, Jay Roach, a young film director, trying to make it in tinsel town. Myers offered Roach the job of directing the film. The producers weren't very convinced, until seeing Roach's story board presentation. Then they were sold. And in the scene where Austin is in Alotta Fagina's apartment, the background music is Susanna Hoffs version of "The Look of Love" by Bacharach, which is absolutely beautiful. When the film was actually made, Hoffs and Roach were happily married, with a son.

Mike Meyers sited the 1966 movie "Our Man Flint" as an inspiration. This movie was a spy spoof, but it was so well constructed and James Coburn was so good that it was taken as a serious spy flick. The movie followed the James Bond formula of someone taking over the world. Also see Dean Martin's "Matt Helm" movies. I think these were supposed to be serious but came off as spoofs.
@frankschneider61564 жыл бұрын
The Derek Flint movies were spoofs (and easily recognizable as such), but where pretty well made. The 4 Matt Helm movies with Dino were somewhat entertaining, but that's where it ended. The Matt Helm TV series was not that great either, but when talking about spoofs, don't forget "The man from U.N.C.L.E" with Robert Vaughn and the incredible British TV series "The Avengers" with Patrick Macnee (especially the episodes with Diana Rigg, starting from Season 4).

Being a teenager throughout the 90's myself, I would definitely agree that Austin Powers was the most quotable comedic movie of that decade... right behind Friday that is. This is my opinion and is based solely on my experiences with the kind of people who I associated myself with, whether randomly or regularly, and that is that as much as those people liked to quote Austin Powers AND Dr Evil, I definitely heard more people quoting Friday. And with Friday it wasn't just the main characters (Smokey and Craig) who were quoted, a lot of the small characters who were only in a scene or 2 had memorable lines that were often quoted by the public, at least in the part of the public that I was around the most.

Great video! MTV here in America saturated their broadcasts with Austin Powers adverts in preparation for the premier, including frequent playing of Ming Tea's "BBC" music video. I thought everybody went to see it, because everybody was quoting lines from the film with that "British" accent 😀

Fun fact: ERB did a rap battle between Austin Powers and James Bond.

I watched this on DVD with my folks. We just got a DVD player and I got a chance to pick films. Was one of the best movie nights with the family, so awkward, but so funny.

Thanks for this. I was busy when the Mike Mires/ Austin Powers films came out. I saw one or two films of his before that. This was a great description of Austin Powers and a great video. Cheers my friend.

I remember before the movie was released me and a friend were obsessed with watching 4 clips from the movie they released on the web when dialup internet was a thing. We used to go around quoting the sharks with freakin laser beams scene before the movie ever came out. We were so happy the whole movie turned out funny ;) Thanks RealPlayer!

It's funny to think that in a few years the time between the Austin Powers movie coming out and the present will be longer than the amount of time he was frozen.

This movie was the reason I had friends in junior high and high school. I was able to do spot-on impressions of the characters and quote it word for word. I owe this film a lot.

You could probably do a follow up of this showing the differences between the US & the international versions of the film. As an Austin fan, I had no idea we got a watered down version here in the states! BTW - You're "Yeah baby!"s were on point. Well performed!

They should do a new movie where its now almost 30 years later and he has to adjust again, and his clothes and slang are now extremely 90's

Yeah Minty, it was like that in the states too. I remember,her not catching the movie in theaters, but when we rented it from Blockbuster Video, my brother and I fell in love with it. And it seemed like everyone was quoting it in school. Home Video is were it got new life.
