In the original Kevin has many siblings as the McCallisters are a big family, so its understandable how he could easily get lost as his parents are busy juggling so many children. Max is an only child. So for his mum to not notice his absence is just negligent of her as a parent.

In the original Kevin actually had a reason to hate his family. They were all mean to him and pushed him around to the point if you were in Kevin’s shoes you would probably wish them away too. In this film the kid barely has a reason to want to be Home Alone other then being an obnoxious brat. He doesn’t go through a character arc of growing up and he barely even seems to miss his family when they are gone.

Something I never noticed as a kid about the original home alone is when Kevin wakes up and goes around the house, the shots are specifically designed to show all the tools he uses for traps later (in addition to showing Kevin’s bewilderment). Buzz’s room shot now reveals the BB gun, the basement shows the clothes iron, etc. So much care went into the original film.

One more thing about this movie I noticed while watching this review: the traps. In the original Home Alone movies, the traps were actual _traps._ All of Harry and Marv's slapstick injuries came about due to their own carelessness and stupidity, with the most interaction from Kevin basically being "push a button." Meanwhile, a lot of Max's traps just consist of him _directly attacking_ the "villains." Not only is this lazier, but it just adds on to the cruelty of the premise.
@Thomasmemoryscentral

Rewatched the original recently and I had forgotten how far into the movie the actual break in happened, and takes up a pretty short part of the movie. Kevin went through so much character growth before that even happened, as he figured out how to take care of himself and miss his family. Some many funny moments (even as small as the shopping bags breaking), and sweet personal growth moments (the conversation with the old neighbour in the church) happen before the break in, so we already really like the kid when it happens. And best part is that it feels like genuine growth, because he comes to the realisation himself that he doesn't feel right, no one makes him become better, though the old guy helps him make sense of it. By the time the thieves break in he's gone from a kid who lashes out in frustration and can't pack his own suitcase to a kid that can take care of himself. He becomes a good kid trying to defend himself and his home. Sequels that focus on the break in and push that as slapstick comedy miss all of that character growth of the kid and the family that makes it such a great movie.

@THEmetalsonic101 The first was a classic. The second rehashed a lot of the things from the first one (showing that it was a one-idea franchise). However, having most of the original characters back from the first film, plus the hilarious efforts of Tim Curry, made the second film work, and it kept most of its charm. Any other movie, once there were no characters from the original film, didn't work and therefore sucked.

@Barnaby Wentworth because it doesn't matter, tbh. You just need a plot device to take the phone out of play. If it's plausible, no one will care how it happens except for a minority of audience members that overthink it. For years lots of movies just pretended that the internet and cellphones didn't even exist (90s to 00s iirc), and even though people would joke about it, they were still able to suspend their disbelief during the movies. Realism isn't always paramount in film. I do think writers shouldn't use the same device every time but only because it becomes cliche.

While Home Alone 2 is indeed a do-over of the first film but in the city, I still loved it and I feel it deserves more credit as a really good follow up. Better than anything we got after it. Honestly calling Home Alone 2 a do-over isn't accurate either. It puts Kevin in a completely different location with almost none of the resources he had in the first film. In Home Alone he had a house, food, a warm bed, and a place to defend himself. In Home Alone 2, he had none of that, a small amount of money, and the only house he could use legally was hollowed out. It certainly felt similar, but different enough.

The first movie worked because of the producer/writer, director, the cast and the john williams soundtrack.. the reason HA2 works even with flaws is because it maintained all of those and the addition's to cast etc where good. From 3 it seems they thought the elements of the formula you needed was a kid left alone, stupid criminals and pratfalls... For a legacy sequel to work we would need chris columbus, the majority of the cast returning and john williams on the soundtrack.

In the second when they see each other again by chance on a busy Manhattan sidewalk, Kevin lets out an ear-piercing scream. It actually makes the kid more sadistic because he's literally trying to kill them at that point. Also, the fact that they got Ellie Kemper as the "bad guy" only makes it worse. I think a really great way to do a modern reboot would be to have the original burglars get out of prison, having changed as people and go to reconcile with an adult Kevin. Something happens and the 3 of them get trapped together and have to fend off intruders working together instead of against each other now. It would be a great continuation of existing characters and some really great interactions could happen there.

Tim Curry saying, "Pardon me Sir, but I'm afraid your mistaken" was so geniusly placed. Uncle Frank saying, "YOU LITTLE JERK!" was fun. And the cherry on top of it was Kevin mouthing, "Keep the change ya filthy Animal." Though I suggest if you ever do another Home Alone or Christmas related video add Kevin saying things like, "...I DON'T THINK SO!", "Get off the phone and make me why don't ya.", "Don't you just love it when a kid wins against (2) idiots." and Kevin laughing after Tim Curry's lines. I actually liked 3. It wasn’t the family leaving Kevin alone for a third time (at that point Child Services would have taken him away at that point) and it wasn’t Marv and Harry breaking out of Jail again to be in the same place as a Kevin by chance (after the cops obtained the “Bad Guys Threaten to kill a Child” recording from 2, they likely got a much harsher sentence). It was a new family who simply allowed their kid to stay home sick for a few hours. No bad parenting here. The kid was decent as well. He saw strange people going into peoples homes and he calls the cops but because they don’t find anything they think he’s just some dumb kid making prank calls. This is a legit thing that can happen. The one complaint is that they bad guys didn’t have to be Espionage Level Bad Guys and it could have just been some Home Robbers, but it was still enjoyable to watch the mayhem occur.
@DakalaShade
@DakalaShade 3 жыл бұрын
I have a soft spot for 3. Don't get me wrong, I like the original and Home Alone 2 better, but 3 was funny. As you said, they didn't need secret-agents or super-spies running around as the bad guys, they could have just been your garden-variety burglars, but the story was good enough once you disregard the contrived reason that burglars are on the street. The traps were inventive. I liked that it was legitimately a new family who just happened to let their kid stay home sick for a few hours (seriously, what kid hasn't had a day home alone because their parents have to work and the kid's gotten sick? We've all been there, we can all relate, and that's what makes 3's 'at home' arc work) while burglars are doing daring daylight robberies. After calling the cops only to have the burglars get away and the cops start thinking the kid's making prank calls, the kid sets up a few booby traps and chaos (and hilarity) quickly ensues. Sure, the story was better in 1 and 2, but 3 at least tried something different within the same formula. Kid's at home, robbers are breaking into places, kid sets up some booby traps that, in the real world, would get you jail-time, but in the movie, are hilarious, robbers break into booby-trap-hell and proceed to step on every metaphorical landmine in their way, cops show up at the end and take the robbers away. It's a good simple formula. One and Two worked because Kevin's family is huge. The first time, Kevin was easily missed because one of the neighbor kids was involved early on in the chaos and got head-counted, so they left with the 'expected' number of children. The second time worked because Kevin followed the wrong person wearing a similar outfit onto the wrong plane, and in his haste, splattered the ticket lady and lost his ticket in the mess. Both movies, as a result, take a kid who is part of a huge family and put him in a situation where he's on his own. Three worked because they're just leaving the kid home for a few hours while he's sick and both parents have to work. It just so happens that the kid got a fancy new RC car that _conveniently_ happens to be carrying a super-top-secret missile guidance chip in it, one that a bunch of people are searching for. As they go from house to house, the kid calls the cops, the cops find nothing, and as is expected, they think the kid's making prank calls. Then, after some time, the criminals come calling, and in an inspired twist, this kid _also_ is a master of booby traps, rigged his house, and catches the would-be robbers as proof that he wasn't making prank calls. I haven't seen any of the others. The first 3 are the only three, in my opinion.

If I took a crack at a Home Alone in-cannon reboot, I think I'd make it so that Kevin is with his nephew and niece, indirectly, while their home is being broken into. You could set it up in a subversion where Butch is now a rich doctor with a beautiful French wife, and they have two children. Kevin is tasked with watching the kids while they are away for the holidays. Kevin could be away while the house is broken into so that he can't reenter, but video chat the kids and help them setup a defense around the house, telling them he's been in this situation before. At some point he could go radio silent, creating a couple new elements of conflict, and giving the kids a chance to stand alone as characters. Having two kids changes the Home Alone dynamic, where the stakes are reduced, but the family element can be explored like it hasn't been so far in the franchise. Coupled with their relationship with Kevin and his different relationship with Butch, you could explore similar concepts to the first movie while keeping them new, and focused around a teamwork aspect. I think you could do the same with the villains, casting an ensemble similar to Die Hard, where they are more competent and played straight, using reconnaissance and modern technology. Making them into a real threat. I think this would really create a great breakaway from the slapstick making it all the more ridiculous when it happens.

The First Movie: Charming and hilarious Christmas comedy The Second Movie: Not as good as the original, but still manages to be somewhat creative and heartfelt The others: Irrelevant Edit: Okay so it seems like I pissed off everyone in my replies. No, I am not saying that the second movie is bad. In fact, its still really good. It just simply wasn't as good as the first.

I'd say Home Alone 3 wasn't irrelevant, but the rest after 3 are indeed irrelevant. At least the protag of 3 has a good reason to stay home (Chicken Pox), and was a child genius against a different set of criminals. Who underestimated him for being a kid of course.

@@DangerousArmyGuy 3 had no reason to exist, but it wasn't total crap. 4-6 can die for all I care.
