I've always adored Elvira! Got to meet Cassandra once in Seattle about 15 years ago. She hosted a double feature of her 2 films and did a Meet and Greet with all the fans present. Super nice, super friendly, she just seemed to be having a ball, and yes she was in full Elvira costume and make-up for the show.

Her gag writer was her Groundlings friend, John Paragon. He also worked with Paul Reubens in creating the Pee-Wee Herman show and is best remembered for playing Jambi the Genie. When he died Petersen had his ashes. She and Reubens then had a fundraiser so they could inter Paragon in style. He’s buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and his urn is in a glass display case and is made to look like Jambi’s box.

I was once babysat by The Mistress Of The Dark, Elvira while she was in character. I live in Colorado Springs, where Elvira went to high school. My friends mother and her went to school together and have remained good friends to this day. Back when i was 19 (1994), Elvira came to Cripple Creek, Colorado, to do an appearance, so my friends mom arranged for us to go meet her. The problem was that Elvira was appearing in a casino, and most of us were too young to get in, being only 17,18,19 years old. Elvira talked to the management of the casino and took 100% responsibility for us all, and we had to stay with her the whole time at her autograph table until she went on stage. So technically, Elvira was my babysitter for the 1½ hours that we spent with her.

I had the same experience. I met Cassandra (not Elvira) when I was young. I was so scared to approach her because I didn't want to be "one of those". But I apologized for bothering her and simply asked if I could just shake her hand and told her I enjoyed her work. When I extended my hand, she grabbed a tight grip of it and said "Oh, come here, you". She pulled me in for a quick hug. SHE SMELLED SO GOOD! She does have the most beautiful eyes! She really is a classy person. I was star struck. I've never forgotten how she treated me. That is one of the highlights of my life!

A good reason the lawsuit Maila Nurmi brought against Cassandra Peterson wasn't successful was because even as early as the 1950s other Vampira imitations had already appeared across the USA on local television stations hosting horror movies. And during Elvira's heyday there were plenty of Elvira wannabes and knockoffs. Cassandra Peterson took it in stride probably thinking the imitations were a form of flattery.

When my daughter was 12, she was feeling really down. She said people didn't like her, she never fit in, and she didn't think she could be herself. I sat her down and we watched the Mistress of the Dark, and i told her the whole story of Elvira, the girl who put the Boob in "Boobtube". The self made, cultural icon who takes no crap from anyone and only does things her own way. The very reason I had such an interesting adolescence. And how she is still doing it 40 years later. Snobish opinions, be damned. My daughter smiled at me, gave me a big hug, and has never questioned her self-confidence ever since. Elvira will make you a better Dad. 😂

May I suggest you do a video like this on the Detroit and Cleveland area horror host from the past: Sir Graves Ghastly (Lawson J. Deming) of Sir Graves Ghastly Presents (from 1967 to 1983)? A lot of Gen X grew up watching his show on Saturday afternoons. He played an array of characters on the show and it was hilarious and fun for all us kids who watched his show. His program cemented the love of horror movies that I have had all my life. He introduced me to the greats like Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee.

Early 80's. She was at Knott's Scary Farm ( I was from OC and was a local at Knott's) for a promo. I was in my mid teens (15-17ish) a punk rocker (all done up for what Knott's would let me in with) and with a few friends. Leaned across the table and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Shocked everyone. She smiled, blushed and gave me a wink. She was great about it and so was security...I got a little what for talking to from them. Didn't get kicked out and had a GREAT NIGHT!!! When I was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, in 1988-1992, a coworker's husband worked at a video production company. He told me that he had converted film and photographs to video for Peterson's family. He told me that Cassandra was actually a redhead. That's when I realized my whole life was a lie. Personally, I don't care if you say it with the traditional French pronunciation, because, after all, that's where the word was first coined, wasn't it?
