With a lot of these films that are often panned, I think it's important to have experienced them at the right time in your life. Critics hated films like Grease 2 and Xanadu but those of us who were kids when those films came out could more easily suspend disbelief and go along for the ride. Stephanie was the complete reverse of Sandy. Even though I like the original in its own way, I have to say I am one of those people who likes the sequel more. The love story is SO much better and way less toxic. In Grease, Danny is constantly screwing things up with Sandy and acting like a jerk, despite being so desperate to get her back. It gets really tiring to watch. He doesn't respect her boundaries or once stand up to his friends, and constantly humiliates her by having to be cool all the time. Michael, by contrast, doesn't so much as look at another girl besides Stephanie and literally risks life and limb to impress her. He also takes the time to tutor her, and he's not one of those "nice guys" who whines that she won't go out with him. He figures his only chance is to create a cool biker alter ego, and in the end she confesses she had fallen for regular Michael at the same time. It's the healthy love story we needed! Also, hot take; John Travolta cannot sing despite being a great actor and dancer, and Michael's song "Charades" is twenty times better than "Sandy". It's such a shame Caulfield's career suffered so much after playing probably the most chivalrous dreamboat of a character in a musical I've ever seen. 😩💔

Four years sounds like nothing now, but back then for teens it was an eternity. Culture and fashion moved very quickly too. Resurrecting something from the 50s craze of the late-70s was never going to work in 1982.

While my family (mother, older sisters, myself, and even my father) all loved Grease, Grease 2 was the one we all loved more~ I think, for me, it was the way Stephanie was a replacement for Danny without the more negative aspects of Danny's personality; I liked that she knew what she wanted, and in the end got that and more, which she acknowledged. And I also loved that Michael was sincere, gentle, and intelligent. Hell, I liked that you can see little sparks of independence and wants in most the female characters, by the end^.^ Some of those deleted scenes I hadn't heard about, and I'd really wish the footage would be found and released. I think the scene of Michael going to Stephanie at the end of the talent show wouldn't be too shocking, cause he's supposed to be playing the piano for the talent show, right? My sisters, mother, and I joked about this last time we watched the movie during a game night. If the audience is supposed to think Michael died, who is the audience supposed to think is playing the piano? If the camera panned over to the side of the stage, Michael would be right there, right?~ Paramount apparently has some Grease things in the works... I'm... interested~~~ I'm hoping that if the one series is a sequel that it draws from *both* movies; really hoping it gets the full loving attention like Cobra Kai gave The Karate Kid franchise...

i love both grease and grease 2, the cast was great, the music was fantastic, the first Grease was set in the 50's, Grease 2 was set the 60's, it is a stand alone movie and the social commentary and music was current. Reproduction was one of the funniest moments in the movie.

I remember my grandmother saying she thought Grease 2 was better than the original. She really liked the comedy in it, especially the smaller guy being the leader of the T-Birds and constantly beating up his larger henchman. I don't think I got it on the first viewing but after watching it again, it is a really funny movie. I think it's true to the spirit of the original but it is it's own thing. However, it was always going to be difficult following up something as successful as Grease.
@RDSports52 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed. My dad really liked the original, so I watched it a lot growing up, but I always enjoyed the second one. I always really liked motorcycles, so I liked that this Grease had bikes in it instead of cars (Although Greased Lightning was an epic car). I also really like Michelle Pfeiffer, and I thought she portrayed Stephanie in much the same way John did with Danny, they were both trying to live in two different worlds (Cool vs. Sensitive), which I thought made a lot of sense to keep at least THAT element of the original in there

I saw Grease 2 first before seeing the original. I had heard the song and knew the story but never saw the original movie. I loved it - of course 2 hours of staring at Michelle Pfeiffer helped :). Also it has that "nerd winning" theme that was big in the 80's
@mariafederowicz74972 жыл бұрын
I was almost 12 years old in June 1982. I watched it endlessly for about a month, when it came on Cinemax or some cable channel in the early 80's. I had never seen the first Grease. I LOVED it! And you gave Adrian Zmed shit for his high voice, but this was supposed to be the early 60's. Have you listened to 60's music in this style. Frankie Avalon, Frankie Valli, and a number of others. It was appropriate for the time period (60's, not 80's). AND, I loved the 'Reproduction' song (I was about 12). Also, I think a bit of the problem was the boys had to change and not the girl (you did mention this in passing). Being that I was, and am, a female, I think that part of the story was awesome.
@thane92 жыл бұрын
As a nerdy kid around your age I too thought the Michael change was far more relatable than the Sandy story from the original. The idea of the popular cute blonde literally telling him exactly what she was looking for and it was something he could go out and do because he was capable and smart was SUPER appealing to me as a kid. Hrmm...maybe I need to unpack that with my wife...hahaha.
@jameskennedy43772 жыл бұрын
Caulfield was right about the title. 'Son of Grease' is creative and era-specific and sets up the film as what it is - a goofy, fun movie that's as much of a parody as an actual sequel. 'Grease 2' indicates that you're supposed to take the film seriously.
@grannyweatherwax8005 Жыл бұрын
I think most adults in the 80s were pretty poor at understanding irony. I’d say Caufield was very ahead of his time.
@richardcummins16302 жыл бұрын
I don't know if someone has already pointed this out, but the video suggests that part of the reason for soundtrack's commercial failure was competition from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at the time. The "Grease 2" soundtrack was released on June 11, 1982. "Thriller" wasn't released until the following November 30th (so I guess we're looking for another culprit).

I have an idea about frenchie, since she was only studying chemistry to get her diploma, she wasn't in regular classes but received private tutoring. Once she had completed everything and passed, was simply handed her diploma by the principal. Therefore she wasn't there for the whole year.

1st of all, you did a great job providing background for behind the scenes/making of Grease 2. 2nd thing, I was a tween when Grease and Grease 2 became available on cable TV, HBO and Showtime specifically, and I loved both. I had HBO which had Grease on its channel but my best friend had Showtime, which had Grease 2 on its schedule and I remember running from my house after watching Grease to her housewives to watch Grease 2 at my friends' house. They were both great movies though in different ways and I'll always love them both.

HBO is an underrated reason that this movie has a cult following. Grease 2 must have been a cheap movie for HBO to broadcast in 1982/1983/1984. I watched it countless times on HBO as a tween. I wonder how many other Gen xers have core memories associated with this movie. Seeing any part of Grease 2 transports me back to early mornings at my Grandma's house.

Yaaaas, finally someone who gives this movie a chance! I love Grease 2!!! Such a good movie, highly underrated. Thanks Minty! I wish they would do a Grease 3. In my fantasy Grease 3 would be in the 70's and it would be about the children of the original T-Birds/Pink Ladies and disco. This probably would never happen since Saturday Night Fever was already about disco. I remember when Maxwell Caulfield starred in the soap opera The Colbys, which was the Dynasty spinoff.

Here I am, a few decades later, still watching reruns of the movie, singing the songs (badly) in the shower. I wish I could tell Maxwell, that he did great and was perfect for the part. AND movie critics are just sour self-important chumps that probably couldn't get a real job in Hollywood. Much love from WV.
