I swear us 80's kids grew up in the greatest era of toy design, I went from the original 80's He-Man & transformers toy franchises, GI-Joe & Thunder Cats, then finally all the TMNT toys. These toys were just incredibly fun, well designed and durable to play with, to me it made the love for the cartoons even more. Sadly even by the mid 90's toys quickly degenerated into the cheaper & faster to produce generic toys of today. Great video Minty!!

Another DareDevil connection: the Foot Clan was a parody of The Hand, the ninja crime syndicate that resurrected Elektra and trained her to be an assassin. Also, it was later semi-canonized that the ooze that mutated the turtles was the same radioactive waste that blinded Matt Murdock and gave him his heightened senses

I was born in 1984 and was hardcore into TMNT. They're the reason why I asked my parents to take karate, and when it was time to choose a weapon to train in after earning my first degree black belt, I chose nunchucks entirely because of Michaelangelo. 😄

When I was teaching my own class back in 2014 I constantly had to explain that I started because I wanted to be a ninja turtle. and for some reason my students, their parents, and the other adults at our community center we expecting me to say I wanted to be a power ranger.

I was born in 87, I had no idea that they were originally a comic book until I became an adult. As a kid, I loved all 3 movies. But looking back now, the first one was the only good movie. They went soft with second movie, but even though it was more “light hearted and goofy” compared to the first movie, it wasn’t nearly as bad as the third movie 😳 When I was in kindergarten in 93, I would go over to my friends house and we would pretend like we were the turtles… I was Mikey, my friend was Raph, his brother was Donny and their neighbor was Leo.

Lab assistant April actually worked for Baxter Stockman. Stockman was originally Black (something Out of the Shadows got right with Tyler Perry). Also, while in the cartoon he was portrayed sympathetically as a struggling inventor who only started working for Shredder because it was the only work he could get, in the comic book he invented the Mousers specifically to be used in crimes because he was a wannabe super villain. Oroku Nagi was the original Shredder who was killed in issue #1. He was the one who killed Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi. His brother, Oroku Saki, took up the mantle when Eastman & Laird realized that they wasted a great character. The cartoon and movie decided to just start with Saki for the sake of simplicity.

My father was in the military and we lived in Germany. We had a small Post Exchange (PX) on base where my father was stationed. There were signs & banners up announcing a release date for when the TMNT toys would be released. These were the 2nd series toys that we're being released mind you. TMNT mania was in full effect at the time. There were crowds of people lined up waiting before the store opened. As soon as the doors opened people stormed the store heading straight to the toy section ripping the TMNT off the shelves until they were bare within seconds. Management brought out these huge bins full of TMNT toys and parents and kids were fighting each other ripping the toys out of people's hands if they got the toys they wanted or didn't already have. It was pure madness. I've never seen anything like this then and since then.

My favorite thing about the original TMNT series was all the fourth wall breaks. One in particular that stands out to me- since he’s my favorite Hero in a Half Shell- is _Donatello’s Badd Time._ Leonardo and Michelangelo are baffled by Donatello’s behavior, but refuse to believe that their brother flipped sides. To which Raphael replies: *“Then you explain what he’s been doing this entire episode!”* The animations, due to scheduling, were rushed and countless mistakes were made. But it was lines like the above-mentioned that makes this series, in my opinion, unmatched by any of its successors. Also: RIP, James “Uncle Phil” Avery. No one will _ever_ out-Shredder him!

I know the comic books had its following but where I grew up nobody even heard of them until the show and toy commercials came on. Everyone I knew at school stopped watching it once they changed the intro. It's a shame they TV execs messed with the formula same as The Real Ghostbusters. As well as the name change from 'Ninja' to 'Hero' when the franchise was imported to the UK, parents in the UK absolutely loathed the Turtles. There were so many campaigns going on to get them banned. I was in primary school at the time, and even *talking* about TMNT was banned in the school. Anyone even talking about them were punished in one way or another. Such hysteria.

@@jayaskme2942 Don’t think it was ever officially banned, but parents were concerned about the violent aspect of the franchise. As Minty said, some changes were made in the comic book to animated series adaptation to make it more kid-friendly. Also, nunchucks are actually illegal in the UK, so Mikey’s antics were dumbed down and hardly used his weapons. In the film, Mikey’s combat parts involving nunchucks were definitely cut in the version we got.

Well, the same thing was going on in the USA in the 1980s. Religious nutjobs and interfering busybody parents' groups were trying to get EVERYTHING banned from TV and toy aisles for all kinds of stupid, panic-mongering reasons. The Smurfs promoted Godlessness and Communism. He-Man, She-Ra, and Dungeons & Dragons encouraged Godlessness, witchcraft, and the worship of Satan. Transformers and GoBots were a source of Godlessness and violence and worship of unnatural machines. TMNT were responsible for Godlessness and putting faith in that most unholy endeavour, SCIENCE, and the abominations thereof. And so on and so forth.

One thing I wanted to say too was that I think the video games played a role in keeping the turtles so popular. Between Turtles in Time and Hyper Stone Heist, the games themselves being so well made helped draw in kids that maybe were more into the games than the cartoon or comics. 1: Awesome video. I was born in 1980, so a lot of 80s-90s stuff is part of my childhood. 2: The farmer turtles' reception probably depends on where one is from... I'm from a small farming town (grew up on a farm outside of town, still live outside of town), and here, those were the ones a lot of kids in my area wanted, cause it like the Turtles were acknowledging us as a fan base. Later on, many of us learned that the origins of ninja dates way back to when people would use farming tools for combat. So, that's also something to take into account. Sure, they look goofy holding the pitchfork, but a pitchfork in the hands of someone skilled in martial arts... Well, that kinda makes it scarier than one wielded by an angry farmer... 3: I have to agree that the darker final season just really feels more like a different show. Show retools never go very well for fans of the pre-retooling. There are other examples of this weirdness, where it would've made more sense for them to just have it be a separate show, and not try to pass it off as further season(s) of the same one. Walker Texas Ranger has a weird alternate setup with different casting and a GMC truck, instead of the typical (ford? dodge?) and using more of a rock instrumental instead of "eyes of the ranger". Another well-known instance is the unfortunate 4th season of Airwolf, that was made by the USA network after CBS cancelled the proper series. USA had no access to the helicopter or cast, so used a lot of stock footage, miniature work, and poor quality rotoscoping (most noticeable in the episode featuring the "Airwolf III", recycled footage and bad rotoscoping of a stationary Redwolf from the main series "Airwolf II" episode). While some of the stories were good, season 4 is just painful to watch, and a lot of us would like to pretend it doesn't exist. 4: The critics thing is spot-on. A lot of the time, it was just reactionary nonsense aimed at popular things. Most of the people railing against whatever they were railing against had never actually been exposed to it, and were just saying stuff to get their 15 minutes of fame. Nowadays, it's kinda died down because they could be sued for slander/liable over claims that can and have been proven to be false.

And I remember the later seasons as a kid and at that point I was kind of moving on from the turtles but now watching seasons 8-10 when they made the drastic change, I think they are pretty good. Better than some of the over the top silliness of the middle seasons. But overall it's definitely one of the greatest cartoon shows ever made to me. My first "favorite cartoon" was definitely "He-Man and the Masters or the Universe"... But that was before TMNT was even a thing. The first time I saw the Turtles ( I actually discovered the original comic series and the cartoon around the same time), I instantly dropped my He-Man toys and videos, forever relegating them to a box in the basement (which sadly would ultimately be lost in a basement flood...), and to be replaced by the entire line of Ninja Turtles stuff! My favorites were the movie tie in figures.

Great video, and very timely with the current turtles mania going on! Very true regarding the ninja business here in the UK; there was a lot of censorship around ninjas and nunchucks at the time

The farming turtles isn't that weird considering in most adaptations they have spent some time living on a farm. But baseball player turtles, rock star turtles etc is actually weird.

Love TMNT! Even got my young nephew into the original series, as well as Street Sharks, Extreme Dinosaurs, Darkwing Duck, and the original DuckTales! Minty's comment about the TMNT farming playset reminded me that a lot of ninja weapons were originally used for farming. Also, Barry Gordon, the voice of Donatello, also voiced Razor/Jake Clawson from "SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron."

20:40 Actually I think the Farmer Turtles would be perfect if you want to re-enact the Turtles staying at a farm, like in the comics, the 1990 movie, the 2003 series and the 2012 series. 😁 Funny that the 1987 series didn't make their own interpretation of the farm story arc, by having an episode where the Turtles help out at someone's farm, and have the Turtles dress up like their action figure counterparts.

yeah, you were spot on about the "professionals" who were speaking out about the turtles. we've seen the same thing from the same types of people over the years where they go on the activist rants about something, making all these claims, coming to find out their claims were wrong and they never actually saw the thing they were protesting.

The only time I've seen them be right about something was the "Mighty Mouse snorting cocaine" thing. After hearing about that for years I finally saw that episode and Mighty Mouse really does crush a flower into dust and snort it up his nose.

I didn’t grow up in the 80’s. Was born in 93. But my step brother’s owned the TMNT movie on vhs, which I watched when I was really small, and was instantly hooked. Shortly went on to watch the OG cartoon and played Turtles in Time on the SNES. There’s just something so endearing about the turtles.

I grew up watching the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon Series. It’s my favorite I had the video games, toys, and even some of the VHS Tapes although the VHS Tape that I had from the first five episodes two of the episodes were in the wrong order that really sucked. My favorite out of all the video games was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time on The SNES.

Man, I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Ninja Turtles back in the day, during my adolescence. I watched the 80s and 90s cartoons all the time and looked forward to watching them especially on Saturday mornings. I can still remember most of the theme song too. I had a plush Donatello doll and a Raphael (my favorite Turtle) that spoke with a pull tab. I owned the first three live-action movies. I had a novelization of the first movie. I played the first two games on the NES system (I'd gladly download them for the Switch if I could). Man, it was so much fun. I'm glad my parents were fine with me enjoying it even if it was geared more towards boys.
