Personally, I don't believe in fait or miracles, all the evidence suggest that our lives are subjected to the laws of randomnes and that our brain loves to find patterns so much that sometimes play tricks on us. That's my opinion, but the movie is told from the perspective of a religious man, so it makes perfectly sense and I don't mind it at all. What always makes me scratch my head is why these aliens are vulnerable to liquid water (air moisture is fine ??) and they decide to invade a planet with so much liquid water on it that you see oceans from space. I don't get it.

It really did a great job of suspense, and visuals were absolutely haunting. This film had an effect on me that stays to this day. It validated my lifelong belief of the Butterfly effect. The outcome of the movie’s characters and their eventual fate was built upon the directions their lives had taken to the point we were invited in to observe. The son whose asthma saved his life. The skill of Merrill in baseball. The wife’s dying words of “swing Merrill.” The loss of Gibson’s faith due to his wife’s death only to regain it demonstrated in the final scene without a word of dialogue spoken. An epiphany for me. Thank you for covering this movie which elicited emotions in me that I never knew resided. 🛸 👽 🎚️

@vicenzor9699 speaking for myself...it's not so much validation of supernatural but the main concept of the two kinds of people. There are people who believe in happenstance, chance, or just plain luck. Then there are the other people who believe in everything happens for a reason. Predestination, there's no luck involved and there is meaning and purpose in everyday events as well as tragedy. Everything happens for a reason and it's up to us to try and decipher these "signs" and wonders guiding us to our true purpose.

What I loved and still do love about Signs is the true heart of the story, the Pastor who dedicated his life to service of the Lord was struck, out of nowhere, with a devastating blow. He lost his faith which is a BIG thing. As it unfolds it shows little by little that there really was a merciful reason behind the tragedy. He was brought to his knees in repentance for his lack of faith and was rewarded with the life of His son. As a pastors wife for 40 years I can attest at how accurate the depiction of the pastor and ministry life was. I can’t tell you how many times the pharmacy scene has occurred in my life. Not only that the statement “I don’t want any of you to spending time with Tracy Abernathy” had my husband and I laughing! We said that to our kids many times. To me the movie is not about aliens but about how Graham learns that God woks all things together for the good. (Romans 8:28). Great story telling. I think I will go and watch it again. ❤

ME TOO! I completely agree with your takeaway on this movie! That's what I thought immediately. I feel we can see GOD'S goodness in all things if we know HIS Character well, as illustrated throughout HIS Word. In considering the title 'Signs', I take it more along the line of 'coincidences'. But when you have too many coincidences, it starts to take on a whole new meaning. Throughout the movie, everything that happened to every character brought them to be at the best place, at the perfect time, for the most profound moment needed. Far too many to list, but some examples to get you to see where I am going with this. Merl, failed at becoming a pro baseball player. He didn't go on to the big leagues, 'because it didn't feel right, not to swing'. The daughter, constantly found something wrong with the water, and was prone to leaving nearly full glasses all over the house. The boy had asthma, and his condition caused him to stop breathing when scared, which kept out the alien poison. Mel's character lost his wife, and his promise to always be there for the kids, probably took on a whole new meaning when he became a single parent. That few seconds where Ray just dozed off, right as he passed the mother, pinning her to the tree. The dying wife's premonitions 'see... swing away'. There almost isn't a single moment that passes, where a 'coincidence' or 'sign' isn't revealed, tested, or put in place. Not just signs of visitors, or signs of things to come. Even that silly store clerk girl, who rambled on and on. It showed Graham, that perceptions might be right, but not worth exploring... which is probably what led to his anger and frustration with the kids and Merl, being fixated with the TV news. No one had the answers, but they sure liked to talk about what they didn't know or understand. From a seemingly random baby monitor, or a shiny clean knife, which first acted like a mirror, but was then used to cut off an alien finger; the same alien that happened to leave Ray's pantry, and end up in Graham's house. Yes, you almost have to watch Signs a few times to catch all of the clues, which seems typical of a Shamalan movie. Every scene, almost every bit of dialog, every situation builds on what seems to be 'random' until it all culminates into the last few minutes of the movie, as if a 'final reveal' of all of those details are fully understood. To me, that is the meaning of 'Signs'. I think a lot of folks miss those details the first few times you watch it. Give it another go.

Rockwell was into realism with a slight bit of caricature, Shyamalan is more like a caricature artist trying to be as realistic as possible but you can't stop seeing the cartoony premise behind it, basically it was completely unbelievable, like listening to a child tell a campfire horror story on the spot.

Just a note: The water affected the aliens because of the microorganisms and impurities in it. The aliens had not accounted for them, hence the lack of protective gear.
@Random-ed2xf Жыл бұрын
Microorganisms are literally everywhere including the air you breathe. They would not have encountered any of it before not just in water.
@grannyweatherwax8005 Жыл бұрын
This sounds like you read some fanwanked explanation online and believed that was actually written into the script. Like how people pointed out that if the aliens were so vulnerable to water, why did they come to a plant with so much of it? “Oh it was because the water was impure.”

After a traumatic brain injury I watched this movie for almost every night for a year! The doctor I was working with actually held a “SIGNS intervention!” It gave me hope and faith that all my family went through would work out for good. Guess what? It did!!! I didn’t receive a 1/10 of what I was told I would get or need financially, but I believed that also had purpose.

I love this film even more than The Sixth Sense. It’s so moving and the title is so accurate in describing what this film is about, which is way more than aliens. The humour in the film is priceless…the tinfoil hats, the conversation between Gibson and Phoenix when they’re talking to the policewoman….I do not understand anyone not liking this film. Its brilliant. Thank you Minty!

I have to agree with you Minty this movie is absolutely fantastic. Not sure what the critics were smoking back then but I guess I didn't appreciate originality and less CGI. I remember one of the Small criticisms for the movie was the fact that the creatures could not open doors and we're afraid of water, well so what. When you have a movie that has great actors With excellent chemistry and an amazing story you will have success every time.

I really got the feeling of brotherly love as the two main actors worked well together, which reminded me of my own relationship with my brother at the time. This was due to me deciding to spend some time with my brother and his family. I was not making it on my own in California and moved to Michigan with them. Anyway, this was one reason I liked the movie and still enjoy it each time I watch.

I think the reason signs didn’t get the best reviews is because Mel Gibson was starting to say anti Semitic things. They were more trying to bash Mel rather than the movie. It’s a great movie.

My ex-wife and I rented The 6th Sense, and I figured it in the first fifteen minutes. She of course didn't believe me, so I wrote it down on a piece of paper, and handed it to her to read after the film ended. Great film, I just happened to figure it out quickly. That said, I'm a huge Shymalan fan, even of his weaker films. The only one I haven't seen, is After Earth. It's on my short list. I loved Signs, and while most films don't give me a jump scare, I remember a couple the first time I watched it. I think the main reason many people don't like his films, is because they just aren't bright enough (the viewers). When I suggest one of his films, just as when I suggest people watch the BBC show Sherlock (Martin Short and Benedict Cumberbatch), I also tell them to either love it it they are bright enough to get it, or hate it if they aren't. I've not been wrong yet lol.

I believe you mean Martin Freeman and not Martin Short in the BBC show Sherlock. Martin Freeman has been in movies such as The Hobbit, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Black Panther as well as other MCU movies/series. Martin Short was a cast member of Saturday Night Live, in movies like The Three Amigos & Innerspace, and currently in the Hulu show Only Murderers in the Building.

@gameofjones4644 Жыл бұрын
I think Night has confirmed this since but there is the idea that tie invaders are not aliens, they're demons. This fits into the religious themes and explains why water affects them so. I enjoyed Sixth Sense and Unbreqkable (best comicbook movie) as they were fresh amd clever takes their Genres (even if The Comicbook Movie had not really arrived yet), but Signs always felt like something a little deeper and always stuck with me. Perhqps it was simply Mel's performance which felt incredibly believable and imitated my own father struggle with bereavement. Greatcdilm; great video.

Saw Signs at a preview in LA in 2002 and liked it a lot. But then I found it on a pirate DVD in Istanbul, in my bleak lonely winter of 2005. I had few diversions and no money, and watched it a lot. The scene with Gibson in the cornfield is the scariest thing I've ever seen on film. It still frightens me, safe in my own apartment, getting up and turning on the light in the hall behind me, after multiple viewings. But I love the film most for the relationship between the brothers, and for the miracles at the end. Thanks for this excellent take.

I live in the same county as M Night. A lot of his film locations are like right down the road from me. One of my friends actually used to work for a company that helped build the theater in his home. He's really into movies too so its neat that he got to work on his home. I love this movie because my mother grew up on a farm in the same county and in the early 60's when she was a toddler, her and her parents saw a ufo hovering over one of their fields just across the street from them. If you do some research, back in like 64 there was a wave of ufo sightings from NY through PA to VA where they were supposedly looking for plant samples. So needless to say, I dig the film

There were two (2) parts of the movie that REALLY Got my Bro and I, 1) the scene of the alien walking by during the B-day party, and 2) The EAS signal when the "attack" began.💩 My Bro Almost missed the part where M. Sha drove away from his home saying, "...Don't Open my pantry, Father. I found one of them and locked 'em in....", as I almost grabbed my mouth from shrieking and Bro didn't quite hear what he said.....😨
