10 Things you didn't know about the Longsword | MHW Iceborne

Something you didn't point out that a lot of people seem to be unaware of is that when you use the Iai Slash to hyper armor through an attack and you get that stronger blue glow on your character, the following spirit gauge regen effect lasts twice as long as it usually does, granting you a total of 2 full spirit bars over the entire duration. Thought that was worth pointing out in the comments for anyone who might read it.

I don't think this is about the blue glow. I think this is about the number of hits you get. When you use the Iai Slash, the character performs two hits; if both of them hit the monster, then you have the extended duration.

@@iliaskapouranis3080 More hits will mean more spirit, but using the Iai Slash to 'parry' will indeed double the duration. Look at the blinking spirit gauge and compare a parry to a non-parry.

One more thing, if you're sliding and you press the button/keybinding for Spirit Slash you'll hop up into the air and do a double slash, if you press it again when you land you'll immediately do a round slash. That combo only requires like 40% of your spirit gauge to pull off, so it's another fast way to build your gauge level if you have a slope to use.

Sliding does the one big jump swing to instant round slash. It's hopping off a ledge or step that'll do the 2 little swings, then once you land you do 2 little swings again and then round slash.

1) you can also cancel foresight slash into a helm breaker. 2) You can also go from helm breaker into foresight slash 3) use the foresight slash in a direction that allows you to hit the monster after it's done using it's move i.e. if it's charging at you, dodge into the monster so the slash goes backwards. You can also Dodge sideways then turn the slash so that you can gain ground going forward. 4) you can cancel the 3rd hit of spirit slash III (the downward hit right you can roundslash) into special sheath. This is really nice because spirit slash III has a really long animation. 5) countering a move with iai slash (get the blue aura and the audio ding) gives you double the duration of the spirit gauge regen than if you do not counter a move 6) unsheathing with spirit slash when you have NO spirit gauge has a lower motion value than the normal overhead slash - but if you do have spirit gauge it has a higher motion value

What you missed, is that you can go from the helm breaker into forsight slash also (safed me alot of times before iai slash was a thing). So there are 3 option to choose. Eather dodge, iai stance or forsight slash.

Should mention that there is actually a short delay after the Helmbreaker before you can actually foresight. It seems to be around 1-1.5 seconds where you are completely helpless (unless you go into Iai).

One thing I'd like to add: with the foresight slash, sometimes you won't be able to land the hit normally, since the effective range of the move is slightly less than a trust due to the initial step backwards. However, if you perform the dodge sideways, then turn as much as you can towards the monster (which is about 45º) you cover significantly more ground in front, having more range than a thrust from the same starting position.

Yep, most of us realize it when we are advanced enough using the longsword. Advanced LS user mostly know you need to direct the foresight direction, otherwise it's hard to connect with roundhouse slash. Then you mastered it enough to know there's 2 part of foresight which you can do a lot with 2nd part of foresight. Normal attack with modified direction of 45 degree, special sheath or even spirit thrust.

Correction for the tip at 7:30 ish: don’t immediately go into special sheathe after a helmbreaker unless the monster is staggered. Since you can foresight slash at the end of the helmbreaker recovery, you could counter an attack and go straight back to red charge in an instant. Then, you can perform an iai spirit slash after the roundslash (if you’re both good at the game and lucky) and then go straight into a faster helmbreaker. Repeat this and you have the highest possible damage combo on longsword but it is barely possible to pull off even one rotation of this because of staggers, delayed attacks and positioning.

Here's a couple tricks I learned from Peppo, the LS speedrun god You can cancel the third slash of Spirit Blade III with Special Sheathe -For godlike pros only-You can go into helmbreaker from spirit iai slash, landing the move and getting the positioning right for this one requires some top tier play *this one not from Peppo but from someone random I don't remember, also not LS specific*You can claw on to an enemy after a mount finishes to stop the mount animation roll when you fall off

spirit to helm is how I play. On PC it's not even hard to get the positioning right, since helm just goes where your camera is pointing, so you can turn around quickly and go back into combat with the helmbreaker, then iai and continue from there as needed.

I beat the game now- World and Iceborne, not just the story but I beat Fatalis, Alatreon and AT Velkhana all solo. Fantastic effing game, those three monsters in particular are so good. I started with the longsword and after a while I felt like I mastered it so then moved to GS and CB, the weapons are unique and interesting.

I like to make a tea with the greenest of the fungus clippings I can find, then season it with a quick swipe of my grundle swirled into the frothy yellow foam. Also boogers make an intense creme brulee style dessert. Just remember crunch goes on top, gooey for the bottom. No heat required. Plus you can eat the glassware to avoid those pesky cleanups everyone dreads after a wholesome family meal like the one I described above.

im not a speed runner just a LS enthusiast, here are some extra tips. if you land the IAI slash through a monster attack you get twice the time of gauge regen, base is like 15 secs so you get like a 30 sec or so. this up to situation you can use the foresight after a helm breaker, also you can also cancel the foresight with a trust and use the foresight again. Also you can control the direction of the foresight with the directional stick, you push in the opposite direction of you want to go.

One tip not a lot of people seem to know about is that LS can ledge hop with the spirit attacks. Idk the motion values but I know they must be super high bc you can hit up to 200+ damage per hit on certain parts and if you have red gauge you can really take a chunk out of the monsters health in a short amount of time

The thing(s) to do take note about Burst slinger shots is while doing spirit slash is the fact that you can you do it to also delay your final slash if you think the monster will come back to where you are. The next thing is doing burst sling shot for the first two slashes will not reset your spirit combo if you dont enough bar to use yet but after the second slash, you must have enough bar for the final roundhouse slash, otherwise if you dont have enough, the slash combo will reset. Forgot to mention: The Special Sheathe (R2+X/RT+A) can be repeated between R2+Triangle/RT+Y and R2+X>R2/RT+A>RT.

One of my favorite longsword builds in World is a K.O. build. I used two pieces of the Barioth set for the set bonus which basicallu gives draw attacks impact damage. The Iai count as draw attacks because of the special sheath, so I would build up to red and use Iai spirit slash. You could get like 3 KOs a hunt. I never tested it with Bludgeoner or the Impact Mantle, but I might try it and see if makes a difference. Still it was so fun going into multiplayer and KOing monsters with a longsword of all things. Super fun and unique playstyle

Reason I avoid defensive build is because they makes you depended on skills too much. Also stopped using Loyal Thunder Tank build and other similar builds, it got boring pretty fast. Full Safi set is more fun to play with, I really love Resentment skill now, just made this Sleep + Exhaust phial Switch Axe build with Protective Polish, its crazy fun.

Another thing to note when choosing a combo for gaining spirit bar is your critical hits give more than normal ones, that is why maximum might secret is imo more important on Ls than agitator secret! (Also criting all the time with such a high base damage weapon as fatalis' is prob more dps too)

good way to build guage is to start with three normal hits, do a fade slash, finish your spirit combo. after finishing spirit combo you can follow up with a normal iai slash to regenerate meter, fade slash, spirit combo and so on. If the monster happens to be attacking you or planning to, you can stop the chain instantly with a stab if not doing the third spirit slash or roundslash. the stab can make a foresight slash or you can cancel those longer lasting animations with a slinger burst. Other thing to note, is to use Iai slash before every helm breaker for extra damage buildup and to use iai spirit slash if the oppurtunity sees fit. Usually when you do a helm breaker there is a tiny delay before you charge into the monster, if you do a succesful iai spirit slash before that, the helm breaker animation is instant and you do extra stun damage.

Cancel forsight into Helmbraker. Helps with repositioning. And forsight can both part's be angled, say forsight the first part to 290° or about 10 a clock to catch a incoming attack and rotate the second part towards the monster.

One thing you missed that I think not many people are aware of... you can upgrade your spirit guage really easily and fast when on a slope... if you use your right bumper or spirit blade attack while sliding it will do an aerial draw spirit blade, this attack can be followed up directly with a spirit roundslash... Even if the aerial draw attack doesn't hit as long as you have spirit guage you can follow up with the roundslash and because the aerial draw attack itself doesn't require any guage you can go from no guage to upgraded guage in 2 attacks long as the aerial draw hits diving you enough guage to follow it up with the roundslash.

One thing that I feel has taken my longsword game to the next level is actually using the directional stick to aim my foresight slashes, sometimes after a foresight slash you will put yourself in a bad position to either get hit or whiff the roundslash, but you can use the stick to aim where you foresight slash to put you in a better position and another thing to note is use the slinger burst. After any of your spirit blade attacks you can slinger burst to completely change directions, do this just before the spirit roundslash so you can turn around and guarantee that you land it so you can fill your spirit gauge.

Another couple tips to build up the spirit level faster, is if you use the spirit slash while sliding, you do an aerial mount hit which chains straight into a roundslash. Also, jumping off a ledge and using the spirit slash does the 2nd last hit of the regular spirit combo 2x (the one with the three hits) and after chains into a roundslash.

Iai Spriti slash is also your best weaker at the moment, as far as LS goes. Just make sure to stand next to the head of the monster, and do a poke in any direction you'd like, and then special sheathe and pull yourself the opposite direction the monster is. From here, enjoy the damage.

Yeah I would urge anyone to experiment between helmsplitter and sheathing and the iai counter. I recently discovered after landing a perfect iai counter, you can immediately go into helmsplitter. So far this is the fastest activation of HS that I have seen so far but im still new to the game lol. And wow I didn't know you can go from roundhouse to HS...nice to know. The autosheathing irks me lol, but yeah so if you don't wanna sheath after roundhouse then HS later, counter first then do HS. This will require practice lol.

For tip #8 speed runners do the 3 claw attacks and softend attack to 1. Soften the part and 2. Activate the agitator skill. You could do way more damage just to double wall bang and then soften the part. Not everything a speed runner does is optimal for a casual hunt.

I think you should say one more thing about the Lg for beginers ...near an edge by using the L2 button" which is the spirit gauche attack button" you can perform a mounting attack ...with the lv 1 spirit you perform one attack ...with lv 2 a two hit combo and on lv3 a 3 hit combo...it is very usefull if you want an easy or multiple mounts on the monster

I honestly just use IA Spirit Slash for damage. i think it deals more damage the higher level your spirit gauge is and it deals like 2/3 of what a helmsplitter does, but is much less risky and faster and you can just chain it after in a foresight slash. With tip 7 you can do the same thing with sword and shield, speedrunners when a monster falls down they will do a falling shield bash then a perfect rush and the last hit where you latch on will knock down or stagger the monster again

Hey man, great vid, I have a question about Tip 3 - Slinger Burst Mechanics if you have the time to answer: How do you aim your slinger behind your character during your spirit slash combo? Whenever I press Slinger burst, I will fire off in the direction my character is facing, and if I wait too many seconds to aim behind me it will interrupt my combo. Is it a camera setting? A focus camera issue? I keep trying in the training area to fire off the slinger to reposition but for the life of me, I can't.
