I can't believe this is 50 years old. I would watch this film countlessly on video and dvd. Gene was perfect as Willy Wonka. The songs and set design has aged like fine wine. Its nice to see that he loved working on it and that he sheds a tear when fans talked to him about it.

Peter Ostrum, who played Charlie, never acted again. His parents took his salary from the movie and created his college fund, which he used to become a veterinarian. Occasionally he'd be asked to speak about his experience in the movie, and would use it to educate children about caring for their pets.

When I heard what became of him after filming the movie I thought that it was wise of him to pursue a career in veterinary medicine away from show business. And that was wise of his parents to put away his earnings for college. From what I've seen in his interviews he seems to be happy in his life.

You've got the candy store sequence wrong. The candy man is throwing candy at the kids who are reaching greedily as if they are entitled to it. He shows more personal attention and concern for Charlie. Asking for payment is a test of his honesty which he passes. The candyman gives Charlie the final ticket on purpose. Wonka expected him to win from the beginning and says so near the end.

I will never forget the scene where Wonka berated Charlie in his office. Yes Wonka was being harsh but he was in the right when he pointed out that Charlie and Grandpa Joe stolen the fizzy lifting drinks. Thereby violating their part of the contract. Another few "Did you know"'s: The young actress Julie Dawn Cole who played Veruca Salt doesn't like Chocolate. she explained it herself in a reunion documentary, In the scene in the big chocolate river room where she had to dip into and taste chocolate sauce, she was trying very hard to get as little as possible on her tongue, and she's visibly flinching from it. Cole and actress Denise Nickerson both thought Peter Ostrum [Charlie] was a little hottie, and they took turns flirting with him. Michael Bollner [Agustus Gloop] didn't speak a word of english, and did all his lines phonetically. The other children tried to make him comfortable, but it was still pretty lonely for him, and it was a bit of a relief for him that Agustus was the first to leave.

@@dhenderson1810 If you do a search, you'll find the documentary here on KZbin, it's a reunion of all the kids touring the town where Willy Wonka was filmed. it's a sweet little nostalgic piece, about an hour long. No, she quite clearly states she just doesn't like chocolate. I find it amusing that the idea of not liking chocolate is so unfathomable. I felt the same way when she said it... "Who doesn't like Chocolate?!" As an aside, this idea of universal tastes has always interested me. I used to work in an art school, and I was chatting with the students and teacher in an art history class, and I posed them a question. There MUST be someone out there who thinks Leonardo DaVinci's Mona Lisa is utter cr*p AND has legitimate arguments to back it up. Taste is not universal so no, NOT everyone thinks the Mona Lisa is a masterpiece. It's just not possible. Anyway, That's a way off point tangent, but I was reminded of it.

Everything about them just CLICKS, lightning in a bottle, the characters are done so well, the actors have great chemistry, the look and feel and music are amazing, and you just ENJOY watching them from start to finish and neither ever get old, just better with age:) Not to mention what sets them apart from their other versions--that nice layer of ANGER that gives them their realism! Yeah, in 'Willy Wonka' all of this wondrous stuff is happening and in 'Annie' everyone bursts out into song and dance but MAN, do they all HATE their lives:):) OH, yeah, did I always know there was a conspiracy going on! So did Mike TeeVee:) Even as a kid I wondered why Slugworth was there BEFORE Veruca got her ticket! That cemented it for me:) AND of course when Charlie and Wonka hugged at the end with that wonderful music and we just knew they were going to be family, NO WONDER Mrs. Bucket was a widow UNLIKE the book. ALMOST for a REASON:):) I SAW 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' in the theater, judged it on its own merits like with everything, but I just didn't have FUN watching it like I ALWAYS do with this one. And that's REALLY unfortunate because I LOVE 'Edward Scissorhands' and 'Beetlejuice', and if Burton had made it so the regular world was like 'Edward Scissorhands' and Wonka and the factory were like 'Beetlejuice' I MIGHT have just gone crazy over it;)

I was amazingly lucky and honored to meet all five of the kids, 10 years ago in Chicago, at Wizard World ComiCon. It was the first time all five of them were together since shooting the movie. All five of them were incredibly friendly and kind, but Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen went above and beyond, engaging me in conversation...not just shaking hands, saying hello and signing an autograph. One of my best friends is beyond words obsessed with Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, so I got an 8X10 of the kids and Gene Wilder standing on the steps inside the Chocolate Room and had them sign it to her for her birthday and Christmas present and Julie and Paris were asking me questions about her and how long we've been friends and giving me kudos for getting her the picture since she couldn't be there herself. Till the day I leave this blue marble, I'll always consider myself every kind of lucky that I got to actually meet all five of them, especially and sadly now that Denise Nickerson isn't with us anymore (I did get to tell her how much of a Dark Shadows fan I am. I use to watch it with my Mom when I was a kid.). We are the makers of the music and we are the dreamers of the dreams.

When Wonka does that forward roll, I always think Gene Wilder leaves it too late to actually go into the roll and he's going to fall flat on his face !

I was just telling my partner how I thought the Candyman was a jerk for handing out free lollies and then being cold towards Charlie, and not 10 seconds later you voiced the exact same opinion! Glad to know the character had a similar impact...hahaha.

This is akin to what Disney was doing at the time , (and kind of still does)- a nice delightful movie for kids with at least one or two freak out sessions for adults. It was the 70's after all LOL

This movie was my childhood and I'm a 2000s kid the movie is always something that makes you wish you were Charlie because he cared more for others than for himself and gave up a one of a kind candy to keep wonka in business he was greatly rewarded he's the role model of the movie showing us what happens when you are honest and care for others rather than yourself we don't even get time to consider our feelings about Charlie we see he's poor and needing to work all the time and as soon as we feel sad we find out that he has a heart of gold and is using his hard earned money on food and other items for his family because he knows his family needs the money more than he does and after that we know that Charlie is the one we love

A few years ago I was falling asleep with the movie playing in the background. I started to dream out the scenes as the audio was heard but the dream changed. I saw the entire layout of the chocolate factory that wasn't shown in the movie or written in the book. In the basement were Oompa Loompas that we didn't see, and they all looked like John Malkovich. They were fueling the entire factory with coal as coal was being mined.

My favorite scene was where the guy is using a computer to calculated the location of the golden tickets. The contest was definitely rigged. The fake Slugworth was able to confront both Veruca and Charlie before the discovery of their tickets were made public. Up the airy mountain, down the rushing glen. We dare not go a-hunting, for fear of little men.

Yeah, some people just don't understand that some movies are _complete,_ with nothing left hanging and needing continuation or clarification. But you know Hollywood: "We've got to keep this cash cow alive," seems to apply all too often.

1: as a kid I always thought the chocolate river was chocolate milk...not just chocolate. Looks like I'm right! Lol 2: the scene with the candy man singing and tossing candy to the kids, I figured was just Charlie fantasizing what being a "rich" kid was like. The next time we see the candyman is how he actually is without the filter of Charlie's imagination over top. Imo

Didja know? The girl who played violet actually turned blue in school after the movie, because her skin absorbed the paint and so she "relapsed" in school. She said she couldn't get a date to the school dance because she was a blueberry, for Real. Violets evil ruined another innocent life.

I love the scene where Wonka appears to go stark raving mad at the end of the boat trip. Laugh my ass off every time I see it - both the character and the actor portraying him are master trolls. Think you got a swing and a miss on the whole candy store guy, the musical bit takes us out of reality, and is a song and dance fantasy moment that isn't really meant to reflect the 'normal' world, any more than people breaking out into song and dance in the middle of a busy city street during any other musical is. The reality was, he was a store owner made all the kids paid for their candy. Alternatively, it could be Charlie's interpretation of him as a kid of little means and these other kids being 'showered in candy', when in reality, they just have the money to get things he doesn't. Still a powerful message, but not one meant to portray the candy store owner as playing favorites.

My (across the hall) neighbor's man friend was cursing her out LOUDLY as I came up the stairs. I'm a street preacher, but they had NEVER heard my preaching voice. HOWEVER, when enough was enough the LORD urged me and I raged in PRAISE as I climbed the stairs! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! THANK YOU JESUS! OOOOOOIO! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! OOOOOOO! THEN when I got into my apartment and closed the door, I realized ALL was quiet. AND it's been quiet EVER since! GLORY! I usually give them cookies etc at Holidays. If they decline my CHRISTMAS gift, I will gladly take it further. They can be SURE this preacher will SURELY rage in PRAISE whenever the LORD shows me they've gone too FAR! GOD is GOOD and merciful! (The LORD drove the devil out of them for a time! Hopefully FOREVER)! AMEN! 🙏🙌

At one time when we lived in Oakland, drug dealers were selling their wares all the way up our block...18th Street. I would walk past them as I was on my way to preach in San Francisco's Tenderloin. One day, the LORD said, Preach! I asked, Where (LORD)? He said, On the sidewalk! So I opened my mouth and started "FOR THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS, IS TO THEM THAT PERISH FOOLISHNESS: BUT UNTO US WHICH ARE SAVED, IT IS THE POWER OF GOD..." I walked toward them as I preached (with my tiny self) and those drug dealers picked up their tables and LEFT, from the front of the block ALL the way BACK! I reached the LAST car to leave and offered the driver a Gospel Tract which he refused, but the passenger took it and our street was DELIVERED! They NEVER returned. HALLELUJAH! 💞🙏🙌💞 THAT is the voice my neighbors heard the other day! How I love the LIVING LORD JESUS! 💞💋💞
