Highlander Alexander MacRae founded Speedo. Who knew?! Originally called MacRae and Company Hosiery, emigré MacRae founded the Australian knitted underwear brand that won the contract to provide socks for the Australian Army in the Great War, allowing the company to expand. In 1927, moving into modern, briefer, backless knitted swimwear that allowed for faster swimming, a company staff competition created the name Speedo. In. 1936, the Australian men’s swim team appeared in Speedo shirtless swim trunks for the first time, causing controversy. Today Speedo is an English company (yes, it’s not Australian or American) based in Nottingham, but its roots are in the wool culture of the Highlands.

Shelties (also known as a Shetland Sheep dog) are from the Shetland Islands off the mainland in North Scotland, they and Rough Collies are both descendants of the widely known Border Collie. Rough Collies are also from the Shetland Isles and both dogs were used for herding sheep or cattle. Most dogs small, medium or large were bred for a specific job, even lap dogs (Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso etc) were bred to keep their owners company. No dog is “bred” to look cute!

A ton of Scots & Irish fled the UK & came to the USA. From 1640s through the 1880s. The British rule was harsh & cruel. They even took Xmas away from the Scots. I do not think the inventor of the refrigerator was Scottish. Probably a US citizen.
@Kakibot2 жыл бұрын
The first ever refrigerator presented to fellow academics, alongside with the whole scientific concept of refrigeration, has indeed been brought to us by a Scot (William Cullen) - it took another 50 years to come up with the first domestic refrigerator (the ice industry at the time did not like this very much), which was patented by an Englishman, but arguably it would take a lot longer without Cullen's initial invention.
@brahnseer35122 жыл бұрын
I did not know this, neither had I heard of William Cullen. When a checked Google about the invention of refrigerator no mention was made of Cullen either. You must add to your list the giants of Adam Smith(father of economics), David Hume, father of modern thought, James Clerk Maxwell the giant referred to by Albert Einstein and his work of electro magnetism and James Hutton, the father of Geology.

I'm 65-years old, my wife 63 and we are huge fans of the Harry Potter books. J.K. Rowling single-handedly kick-started a generation of young people to re-engage with the printed word. The fact that you are one of the very few that finds it "over rated [sic] N [sic] annoying" is perhaps an indication of your lack of imagination and comprehension rather than a failing on the author's part.
