Ingrid Nilsen is one of the most well spoken people I have come across on YT. Whether she's talking about donuts (her favorite food), periods, makeup, or to former president Barack Obama, she chooses her words and sentence structure very carefully. It is always a pleasure to listen to anything she has to say. Xo

Another fact: The prostaglandins that cause cramping don't stop there. They also travel to the colon, which is why poop cramps or pooping more while menstruating can occur to so many people.

I hate that people that don't have periods like to downplay the menstrual pain we feel. I have such severe period cramps that I have very strong painkillers to combat the pain and to carry on with my life but even with that I'm still very much impacted by my pain. My doctor has even called my pain level a chronic problem for me. I just wish that people that don't have a period would realise that I'm not being a baby with my pain, I have a chronic illness and nerve disorder and I know pain and my cramps are real pain!

Fun fact, the mood swings caused by periods is where the word lunatic stems from. It was noticed that women went a bit crazy once a month, which people linked to the cycle of the moon (as a full moon is also once a month). So the word lunar (which obviously refers to the moon) was the basis of the word lunatic, meaning the 'crazy' that women supposedly suffer from.
@avcaover28606 жыл бұрын
Damn.....that has ruined the vision of a moon for me😂😂😂
@grrrohmy6654 жыл бұрын
i was told that the word lunatic simply comes from the moon. people found that people act crazy and more casualties happen on a full moon, luna in latin is moon. i didn’t know it had to do or came from women 😳😳

I wish we (society) were more freely able to discuss is what is healthy in a period and what is not. Periods vary greatly, but some period symptoms are definite red flags for certain medical conditions (ex: endometriosis, uteran cancer, etc.). Yet, because periods are so heavily stigmatized, it is often unthinkable to a young person to ask "is my period normal?" or "is my body healthy in regards to my cycle?". Personally, I have naturally very unhealthy periods. Due to hormonal issues, my body does not have functional cycles but instead bleeds continuously in the absence of medication to intervene in the process. As a teenager, I had a gut feeling that bleeding nonstop for 25+ days at a time was unhealthy, but I steadfastly refused to speak to a doctor or my mother out of shame. This continued for years. The end result was extreme anemia, fatigue, and generally lowered life satisfaction due to being constantly on my period with no relief. There was an extremely easy solution to my medical dysfunction, but I lived with too much embarrassment to advocate for myself. Please, friends, ask questions about your body and your period, especially if you feel that something may be unhealthy!!! It will only benefit you. You will either learn that it is healthy and normal, or you can begin to address whatever is off kilter. It may save your health or ease your anxiety.

As a guy, I've always tried to learn as much as possible, so I knew most of this from before, but I'm glad that more and more (especially young) women are learning these things. I've never found periods and blood disgusting, it's just a natural part of life, and we (guys) just need to deal with it and not freat out like some idiots do. It's natural and normal. I've even been able to educate ex's in the past, because I knew more than they did (mom's anatomy books from nursing school. I was a weird kid), and they were grateful for the knowledge. It's awesome that through KZbin, even more people can learn these things that should be basic learning for EVERYONE in middle school... I just hope this isn't registered as 'adult content' because of some silly, prippy people... Thank you, Ingrid!❤😊

Michael Berthelsen as a chick I wish more guys thought like you do.
@MichaelBerthelsen6 жыл бұрын
Sarah Schouveller I think it has a lot to do with being raised by a single-parent nurse who always encouraged learning and curiosity. I got to even read her anatomy books as a kid. I say read, but in the beginning it was mostly looking at diagrams. But yeah, she had the 'no means no, and use protection' talk with me when I was 9-10 years old. She wasn't scared of educating me and letting me know these things. Education is damn important. And not having any problems with the sight of blood helps a lot too, I guess.😅 But I do wish more guys weren't so up-tight and weird about it... It's a natural biological thing, like saliva or mucus production. It just happens, it's a thing, no big deal, right? (Well, no big deal to US, we're not the ones having to suffer through it... I was pissed when I heard of a private school somewhere on the East(?) Coast that refused to let girls go to the bathroom to change sanitaries or tampons or wash... That was messed up...)

It's also important to be honest with your doctor! And if your doctor is not listening to you and diminishing what you're experiencing, you can go to another doctor. It takes time but once your health concerns are validated you feel SO much better. ❤️
@melnatalks6 жыл бұрын
aromancandle I wish someone told me this when I was younger. I had a really bad experience with a doctor not believing my period cramp severeness. He basically told me to suck it up and buy some pain killers. It took me almost a decade to seek a second opinion because I was embarassed to have thought I need medical help, even though I was (and still am sometimes) unable to get out of bed, crying about my cramps and wishing I’d faint instead of experiencing it. The second doctor I visited was shocked by my last experience. She took me seriously and turns out I have endometriosis which causes extreme pain during periods. With my diagnosis it’s much easier to tell people that I have severe cramps.

The part on personal experience was such an amazing point! I don't remember the medical term, but I basically have a non-cancerous cyst that develops in my ovaries over the month. It gets broken down naturally and rebuilds naturally. (MANY WOMEN HAVE THIS AND DON'T KNOW). If the cyst is formed during the beginning of my period, it can actually block the blood and debris my period is trying to excrete, causing severe cramping causing numbness and loss of function of my legs, vomiting, loss of appetite, and so on. It is extremely painful and at one point was prescribed 800mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours for the first 2-3 days of my period. I don't know how many times from men and women I have heard that I was being so dramatic about my cramps and expected to function as normal. I'd even gone to an ob/gyn three times over 7 years before one of them actually believed my symptoms, did a scan, and found the cyst. I'm so so thankful to that doctor! Please don't discredit another's situation because you may never know the reality!

I owe you a debt of gratitude for the courage it takes to unveil the complicated myths of the female biology, and you inspire me to educate my future children in an open and conversational manner. You're approach, even in 2018, is so bold, so fearless, and so inspiring so that I cannot only accept the guaranteed procedures of my body, but to love and respect it's discourse. Thank you, Ingrid! I hate it that society thinks women on their periods are basically chocolate-eating monsters, and super super emotionally sensitive. I have NEVER in my 12 years of having had periods experienced hormonal mood swings. You can talk to me like a NORMAL person when I'm menstruating. Because I am my NORMAL self. Sometimes it CAN happen that I am in so much pain that I just want to be left alone, spend the day in bed, etc. That's when I might come across as maybe apathetic. But that's not the hormones, it's the constant pain that is bound to leave a mark on your overall wellbeing and thus your mood. Still, this is something that occurs just *sometimes*. My last period was completely pain-free. It's always different.

Unfortunately, I am one of those people for whom having their period is a nightmare. There is no way I can carry on normally with my life and forget about it - it wants to be in a centre of attention all the time (few days before or even few days after) and during that time I need to take painkillers every 2-3 hours. I think I have most of the symptoms you can think of: bloating, breakouts, painful breast, cramps, extreme pain, heavy flow, nausea... Also my period circle is very irregular and also late most of the time which means that if I am lucky I can have between 4-8 periods a year instead of 12-13. I am always envious of people who have really light periods.

It's great that you found something that helps you :) My BMI is high so doctors don't want to prescribe me any. Plus they might make me get my period every month which is not what I am going for. Unless the pill could get rid of all the symptoms.
@AmyLeeAdams6 жыл бұрын
Are you otherwise healthy? How are your hormone levels? The severe symptoms and irregular periods led me to believe that you might have a hormonal imbalance. Since you say that your BMI is high and you cannot take the pill, have you considered looking into balancing out your hormones naturally?
@joanna.mytravels6 жыл бұрын
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, other than that I have no issues. I am not lucky with doctors here, they don't want to check my hormones as apparently they cannot give me anything for it with my BMI. I haven't researched the natural ways to balance hormones at all, so I know nothing about it.
@AmyLeeAdams6 жыл бұрын
Ugh, sorry to hear that, PCOS is horrible! Also, sorry to hear that your luck with doctors sucks. PCOS is almost always connected to hormonal imbalance (as it is an endocrine disorder). I would highly suggest you look into PCOS diet, it can really help with your condition. The key thing is to get your blood sugar and your hormone levels under control, which should also in the long run make your periods more regular and also more manageable. Perhaps you could also consult with an nutritionist if you have that option, since you haven't had luck with doctors. I wish you the best of luck! Oh, and let me just add this: take it one step at a time, perhaps try adding some things to your diet, taking something from it...don't get overwhelmed by it, you do not have to do it all at once :)

Thank you so much for talking about this! This is such an important topic! For me, it felt especially important to call-out this hurtful way of thinking that being on our period supposedly makes us irrational, uncalculable beings that cannot be taken seriously because of raging hormones and that, whenever we are upset about something we are bascially called mad and are generally dismissed and diminished and it is often immediately assumed that it's the period that makes us act a certain way or say something - and that's taking away from what we are expressing. Oh Ingrid I loved this video so much. Apart from learning new things I didn't know about periods you also transmit such an important message. That periods are another aspect of women's lifes and we should be able to live it with freedom, without embarassment and with naturality. In my country, Spain, it is widely normalized, and I'm grateful for that, although there is still some estigma and stereotypes around it (such as "are you on your period?", and the whole "women become crazy when they're on their period"). Thanks to the videos you've made about this topic I can see the state of the situation is not the same everywhere. Not in countries where women rights are nonexistent, but even in countries that we would consider "advanced" like the United States, or mine as well. It's sad but we can change this conception about periods daily with our words and actions, like yours :) Thank you. Love from me to you

People, sexuality and gender are spectrums. I know people who have ovaries and periods, but still cringe while hearing the word "woman" or "girl" said about them, because they have a totally other gender identification. Sure people with periods are BORN female, but that doesnt mean they will always identify as one. Plus, notice how us "liberals" do their best to include everyone and make the world a more tolerant and respectful place, meanwhile non-liberals are out there to judgingand disrespecting them just for doing so? Just sayin, peace ✌️

I use a ruby cup and outside of knowing and feeling emotionally drained, because period = no pregnancy again for the 24th cycle, I sometimes don't notice that I am on my period during the day. Because with a cup you don't have to worry about changing it out every few hours, I can forget about it from breakfast until I get home from work. It's a wonderful thing. The moodiness before my period - that is REAL for me though.

I really appreciate that you talk about periods in terms of "people" instead of "women." It's important to acknolwedge that not everyone who has a period is a cis-gender woman. Thanks for setting a great example!

Man, I'm on day 40 and still don't have my period, due to a lot of anxiety earlier this month. I just wish it would come already so I could stop pms-ing :(
