THINGS YOU NEED TO SAY NO TO // GET SELF-RESPECT
There are a lot of things in your life that you're saying yes to that you need to start saying no to - some of them are obvious, but many of them are not. And saying no to these big ones is not only for your own self-respect but for your mental wellbeing and the quality of your most important relationships.
Many of them have to do with people pleasing and a lack of healthy boundaries, and some are just bad habits. But after we're through today, you're going to feel a whole lot more in charge of your own life and choices and a whole lot less confused, overwhelmed, stuck and frustrated. I hope you love learning these ones!

My mama- who has lived with me since I moved out with my 3 year old at 19.(so basically my entire life) I really need to work on saying no to her. She is narcissistic but possibly dying this third round of needing another kidney transplant, so it's hard for me to stand up to her manipulation because I'm scared of regretting it for the rest of my life if she dies. To start with an actual goal I guess I will say no to her cooking Thanksgiving for my family this year. I'm 39 years old and I've never been allowed to cook a meal for my husband or family in my own home because that's "her thing." So I'm going to ask if I can do the cooking this year. 😁👍 (I'll let you know how that goes... She's too weak to throw anything at me so....😆)💜 Thank you for all you do, Julia.

@@GirlMomma sister - just because someone is dying, it doesn't give them an excuse to be a jerk. You can speak up, set your boundaries and hold your ground without being rude or mean and I think you will grow a lot more if you let yourself own your wants, needs and preferences - even with you mom - than if you let her walk all over you until the day she dies.

I was not allowed to say "no" to my narcissistic husband. I was controlled by him. He gets angry and makes me feel guilty and abuses me emotionally if for example I say I don't feel like going to the movies tonight. This is one example of thousands other examples. He doesn't accept any boundary. So I finally left him 4 months ago after living with no boundaries for more than 20 years. I'm extremely proud of myself and respecting myself more and more everyday.

1. Staying in situations or interactions you're not OK with. 2. Saying No to conversations which you don't want to have. 3. Justifying our choices to people to whom it's none of their business. 4. Say No to apologising to people who don't like what you like or think you should like or dislike something. 5. Don't apologise for your goals and dreams. 6. You need to stop saying No to feeling pressures or obligations to do other things. 7. Say No to being an A-Hole to yourself. (Belittling yourself) 8. Say No to waiting for other people to change so you can be happy 9. Start saying No to taking responsibility for other people's thoughts and actions, feelings and choices. 10. Hmmm. I feel your pain. I had to separate myself from my mother who has all the characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder except for one. I was tired of the emotional and verbal abuse. Unfortunately, there are some people who don't know my mom well, who invalidates my feelings and tell me I should speak with her. I just recently declined a wedding my mother will be attending. That person kept trying to convince me that I need to go. I don't know how you deal with the judgers who don't understand but I'll take advice about what to say if you have any.

@@phoenix9999 I walked away from my whole family too and the environment often don't see their dominance. I recognize the controlling behavior from the others trying to tell you to talk to her. They guilt you while the perception is reversed as if you are the bad person and your mother the left behind mother victim. It's awful but I'm happy you distanced yourself and cut off their controlling patterns. I'm still wrestling with guilt now and then. Also suffered from manipulation at work and it's hard to stop the conversation with your supervisor but I should do it from now on by saying 'I'm not going to have this conversation'. Because it's manipulative and labeling and one way traffic transfer. Bless you.

I think this is a generational thing we are taught to please others, and subconsciously we allow the teaching to take place through observation, if it's the only thing we have learned in childhood it's the only thing we know. It is a behavior we can un-learn especially if taught the consequences of people-pleasing; narcissistically abusive relationships teach us these exact consequences. It's hard to leave a narcissistically abusive relationship even when individuals want to; because the external factors work in such a way that it becomes difficult to leave. This is what society is failing to understand. That's not to say it isn't doable.

You’re so very authentic, real and organized in your content. I really enjoy your videos! This one hit home. Boundaries are my toughest challenge. I’ve recently set up goals including 5 year and ten year. I’m 54 and don’t have time to waste. In my friend group, I was forever the counselor, life coach, even punching bag etc for folks repeating the same things over and over and needing me to hear the daily drama. It exhausted me, derailed me from focusing and left me scattered. I’ve had to let them go. It was painful but I need to focus on myself, my career, my health and my sanity. I even deactivated my FB account. Now that I’ve had that energy back to direct toward my goals I’ve scored amazing job opportunities I never thought possible (interview on Tuesday!), been running daily and so much more. I now wake up and instead of reaching for FB, I reach for motivational videos and feel thrilled to watch your new ones each time! You really validated all that I’ve been saying NO to, and I thank you! Needed this! 💜

Also, someone keeps telling me same things. I walk away, gentley, I've told person..."can we stop talking about that one guy"....there is an apology and then in 2 days or so the guy is brought up again in conversation and I end up moving around and leaving room. (it's a family member who talks and I live with.) Otherwise, things are pretty good, many blessing here. Look at life, and people and nature, you'll see sooooo many blessings, with gratitude on a daily basis, things change, the Universe / God force gives you what you want. Meditation is key.

The health part is so central, because it dictates the rest. For some ppl, self-development should start with taking good care of their health, which will make the rest of other steps so much easier. I heard a pastor once say “If you get strong enough in God you won’t care what people think about you.” I thought that was a very insightful statement. Trying to please others is a fool’s errand. People are fickle and unpredictable. Certainly we should care about others although boundaries and self standards must be put in place in any healthy relationship.

My dad often goes on rants about politics, and I've purposely been avoid dealing with politics and news lately. Yesterday he started on one of these rants on the phone, and I started ignoring what he was saying and doing stuff online - that is often a way I've dealt with it in the past (not the healthiest). Then he paused, and asked me if I was paying attention, and I actually said, "No, I am trying to protect myself. I can't handle emotionally and mentally thinking and talking about this stuff so I checked out." At that point, I realized that I could have just said this from the get-go, and saved both of us from wasted breath and hurt feelings. But, this was the first time I actually spoke up about this with my father. Baby steps!!!

pukasmom that’s my dream as well! I would love to start a homeless shelter in my home town for women and men but mostly women. In our state, the only way you can receive help is if you are a woman going through domestic violence, where you have to report it to receive help or you are a drug addict. There are more places to help men than women and children and it sickens me. God bless u for your dream

This resonated with me. I have trouble saying no to family. They use and mistreat me, my mom has Alzheimer’s. So I thought by helping them it could keep the family together but then I realized she would not want me treated this way and she would be appalled. I stood up to them, they mocked me, I held them accountable, they don’t speak to me anymore. I have peace.

I'm retired Army I served 22 years and I'm 40. I was married for 17 years to a narcissist. I didn't know or notice till the last 3 years of our marriage. I am a man and was belittled and controlled to the point that I lost all respect for myself. I alienated all family and friends for this person. I never said no because of the rage that it would cause if I didn't comply with their agenda. I have been divorced now for 3 years and in a new relationship. I am still suffering from complex PTSD/narcissistic abuse syndrome. I still find it hard to say no but when I do I feel guilty. I also feel like I'm saying no in a mean or angry way. I'm working on it. Videos like these encourage me that it is ok to say no thankyou.

One thing that I have learned from setting healthy boundaries and saying no to what inflicts harm on me or someone else and yes to self love and reflection is that once you know yourself and what you are capable of doing or wants to do then you are able to go get it, find yourself a healthy support system and folks who can encourage and believe in you and see you for the potential of tomorrow and the triumph from strife from yesterday. I am rewatching this video 5 months later as a reminder to keep going. I've currently had friendly conversations with folks in business like fortune 1000/500/100 companies. I've made friends who are into things like modeling, fashion, acting, music, writing, finances, I even dared politics and religion, but that's not my cup of tea darlings. Hope is a very useful tool. It allows you the optimism to look ahead so you don't get stuck too long, bit it gives you a pessimistic point of reference to assure that within growth, there are at times adversity and strain, this isn't set in place to hold you back, but to show you just how strong you actually are and what you were made to handle. Typically on average, everyone is so much more than what they have ever been credited. I have ideas that are being valued and invested in, if someone can see something in me, then, I can easily spare the time for you. See, it's reciprocity and equality. Give and receive, taking is a tool used during specific moments, not a lifestyle choice deriving to your own pure satisfaction and gains. That's rude. Like expecting mom's to "do it all/be the best/trophy wives". I started watching Julia Kristina Counseling KZbin channel about 3 or so years ago, so I'm relatively new here, I know nothing, but I'm sincerely appreciative for the opportunity to learn and advance myself. One step, one day, one breath. That's all it takes, anything that gets in the way, say "No" too. Sometimes, you gotta say no to the things you like, to make room for the things you're gonna love. Letting go of what other's expect you to be is hard, but it's attainable. Promise. I believe in You World, and I truly with all my heart believe that the values instilled and learned here will carry you over in your life. Julia Kristina Counseling KZbin channel has saved me a million times over and her lessons continue to encourage me to improve and hold out for a healthy and loving future. Until then, I am enjoying the work on myself. Good luck World, I am proud of you and I fully support and believe in You. With all my heart and love, "Take Good Care" ps: hi shifters

At the risk of being told that I should not be saying sorry when I have nothing to be sorry for I am sorry that in today’s day and age you had to be confronted by narrow minded people regarding having a profession and being a mother at the same time. Knowing when to say no and when to or not to apologize can be confusing time. Likewise when you should or shouldn’t allow cognitive dissonance to occupy your thoughts or disregard it. The one that really hit home and hard to swallow was saying no to waiting for other people to change and the one that followed that tied closely to it regarding people's opinions, beliefs, etc. I find that this one is so important for a real peace of mind. And yet I find myself still wishing someone was just a tad different for my own happiness. Now I will make it a habit to allow the other person to be as they are without feeling like I have to change them. What a relief!

Julia, this is so helpful. I was close to someone I respected, but I think he was insecure or had issues with control. He often spent time with people that were not healthy whom he could 'help'/influence. I didn't enjoy things they chose to discuss - ridiculing others, gossiping, put-downs, etc. I didn't want to be with them, and he got upset that I didn't like 'any of his friends.' I liked many of his friends who are healthy, but to him, it was not acceptable that I didn't want to join their demeaning conversations. I think he wants everyone to agree with and approve him, so my not being able to do so was off-putting. It was disappointing but I am feeling better about my life. I think I was tired of agreeing with and supporting everything he said/did to avoid his defensive reactions when I didn't.

Girl, I'm I glad I found your video in my recommends! Growing up, I was alert to what I want and how I want and I had no room for tolerance. Down the drain, relationships, family, friends and people closed to me called me names...Strict, wicked, miss too perfect. This played a lot to my friendships, I became a young lady without friends coz they either thought I was too strict , wicked or claiming to be perfect. I got pregnant at 22, and changed from everything I believed in to everything I never believe in but merely loved to please and hang in there to survive in a world that didn't understand my kind of person. I compromised my values and believes into people pleasing and got a few friends(I'm a friendly friend who respects and invests in real friendships) but the betrayals served as a reawakening. At the moment, I live in a foreign country and basically have no friends. I be shut them all off. I now understand, I put friends a lot before myself and climbedountains to save people who didn't need being saved until I stood alone with no savior Through out this journey, I left the abusive relationship and in laws, I basically cut off from friends. I've had the opportunity to compare me ...My earlier self being one who never compromised her wants and needs, values and respect, to one who did everything people pleasing in order to fit in. Right now, I found me. I found me and I believe I'm better off in my original self. As long as I put me first, i don't have to apologise for putting me first. But then, the reality I've had to face is, watching all these people come back trying their hand at taking a piece of my former self and having to withdraw because I've understood both worlds and how to.out my priorities in place. However, there's times I kind of feel a little depress seeing my former friends partying , and all. I sometimes feel left out. But when I remember the drama and toxic nature of hanging out with people who want to be served but cant serve, who eant to havr a say in ones life, who want to own your story and want you to give while they take and as much as judge you for.not giving enough, it kind of scares me, but comforts me because, my inner peace, respect and silence is much more important than the noise. I've come to acknowledge the fact that I'm introverted, as much as I'm open minded, open handed , and always want to help, I cannot afford to lose myself in trying to help others while leaving me out. It's a process, and youre the reason I prefer to seek answers on the internet than ask familiar faces around me, coz everyone seems to be charging towards the opportunity to take advantage and it's a little hard sometimes finding people who can do stuffs for you without negative ulteriorr motives.

Stephania Edwards I hear you. Giving, giving, giving and then finding that when your needing help but standing alone is a painful wake up call. I’ve had to let all my friends go too. And, I’ve found me! Now I’m my own hero, my own best friend and positive changes are happening daily. Thanks for sharing your truth. 💕

I find as I get older I say no a lot more. When I fill myself up with good and healthy things and habits I’m able to have the energy to do more for myself and others. As a Christ follower I like to give to others but I do have to give to myself in order to do that.
