In some areas lions scavenge more hyena kills than they make themselves. I've seen both bald and golden eagles scavenging road kills. Just to remind people that predators scavenge also.

The claim of the "tiny dinosaur skull" found in amber was actually later redacted by the authors of the paper that first described it. It was most likely not actually a dinosaur but just a very small prehistoric lizard. Also this particular fossil brought with it a lot of controversy about amber mines in Myanmar. There is thought to be a lot of child labor with dangerous and sometimes even deadly working conditions for very little pay. It is also a concern that the money earned from the amber mines is going to the Myanmar military which is surrounded by controversy due to the genocide of the Rohingya people. There's a lot of scientists who find it unethical to buy amber fossils from Myanmar for this reason Although it makes sense that you wouldn't know all this as this fossil is a fairly recent discovery and the discussions surrounding both the fossil itself and the conditions in which it was obtained are still ongoing in the paleontological world
@RichardRenes
@RichardRenes 3 жыл бұрын
small animals are very rare to leave fossils. There probably would have been dozens of dinosaur species not bigger than a pigeon but evidence for them is rare. The currently smallest dinosaur is the honey hummingbird so.. it is possible that there have been non-avian dinosaurs that would not have been much bigger
@zoe547
@zoe547 3 жыл бұрын
@@RichardRenes I understand that. I didn't mean to imply that it's impossible for a dinosaur that small to exist. My goal was simply to inform people of the fact that this particular specimen was most likely not a dinosaur, as well as to inform people of the controversies surrounding it's discovery.

1. T. rex can hunt and scavenge as most carnivores ought to do. And just to add, Hyenas are renowned not only for their scavenging, but their high kill count. 2. His name is Othneil and the Brontosaurus/Apatosaurus thing is a bit more complicated than just nomenclature and whose head is whose. 3. Occulodentavis (the name given to the head encased in amber) most likely isn't a dinosaur/bird. In fact, after pain-staking analysis, it's likely that the animal was a type of lizard. This has been causing a stir ever since its discovery due to the strange characteristics of the head considered to be more like a typical reptile than any dinosaur. Currently, there was a retraction made to the paper describing it and paleontologists have been going crazy over whether or not this should've happened. 4. The piece of humerus has since been attributed to Megalosaurus. Before, it was informally called "Scrotus humanum." I'll give you a second to figure that out. 5. Other than eggshells, the growth rates of many dinosaurs as well as the bones, which were highly vascularized, also proves endothermy (a warm-blooded nature). 6. The sea turtle isn't an ancestor of anything, but an animal that SHARES a common ancestor with plesiosaurs. Mosasaurs were ocean going lizards with affinities closer to monitor lizards. Ichthyosaurs came from a totally separate branch of reptiles from dinosaurs, pterosaurs, birds, and the other major sea reptiles.

Just something to add another line to your post. Currently postulated that T. Rex livrd in closely associated groups based on fossils that had massive,healed, debilitating injuries that would have prevented hunting probably even scavenging while healing (unless dinos were so thoughtful that they died right in front of the aforementioned t rex). Personally I find that both fascinating and a bit terrifying to think of them as a hunting pack or group...the big ones ignore you so that the young can practice on safe prey...but make sure you don't run off to far. Sort of like the video of the killer whale that was keeping seal pups from escaping while the half grown pup (?) was learning to kill them.

1:31 Hyenas aren't scavengers. They're very effective pack hunters and kill most of what they eat. But being very intelligent, they are smart enough to steal kills whenever they can. Similarly the T-Rex might have itself been a pack hunter. The size of their brains relative to body mass was among the highest of any dinosaurs, and they were likely at least somewhat social. They also had feathers and lips.

Many humans also don't realize that what they usually call "water dinos" are not dinosaurs and have never been classified as such. They are not even a single group for that matter. And while you are certainly right that there is a lot more to discover about the oceans I don't think that would have missed huge reptiles that need to go to the surface to breathe. The surface lair of the ocean is fairly well know, plus this type of animals usually don't live far from the coast.
