I had to leave my cats at home for a month for surgery and rehab. I live with a grandson, so didn't have ti worry about feeding, water, and litter problems, but I knew they would miss me. They always sleep on my bed at night, so when I left I didn't remove my sheets because I know cats have a good sense of smell. I wanted them to know I am still somewhere. When I came home, all six of them were asleep on my bed. They hadn't forgotten me. They kept rubbing against me, happy that I was back. I changed the bedding before sleeping because it had a lot of fur on it, but I believe that if you are going to be away for a long time you should leave items behind that have your smell on them to provide comfort for them until you return.

I was hospitalized for 8 days and while a friend stayed over a few nights and was over daily for food and water and litter scooping, I left a few tee shirts needing washing on my bed and living room ‘chair-bed’ and they were well used, judging by the cat hair left on them. Leaving caregiver-scented clothes around is both easy if not essential for Kitty’s emotional wellbeing.

I love the idea of leaving the bedding for the cats so they had something of you to curl up on. Years ago I fed a cat whose owner was in hospital for a long time (and eventually died) and he stayed on her bed all the time and would not let anyone approach him. People came and left food for him but we couldn't get near. In the end it was very hard to find a new home for him, but I eventually succeeded. The loneliness had made him almost feral.

Make sure your cat sitter is someone your cat knows, trusts, and likes. Also someone who will clean the litter, change it, check chow for mold or roaches, clean the food and water bowls, brush and actually spend time and play with them, and will watch your cat for injury or illness, and act accordingly. The last person you need is someone who just throws food in their bowl, adds clean water in a dirty bowl, then leaves. Or finally changes the litter the day before you get home. Know your cat sitter! ❤️

We never leave our car home alone over night. We have had to leave for vacations twice since we got her and both times we’ve taken her with us. She’s got a shitton of stuff just for when we travel with her. She has a kennel, cat carrier, playpen, travel litter box and stroller. Her playpen is her favorite place to hang our when we travel. She adjusts really well in a short amount of time as long as she has her playpen to use as a safe place in new surroundings.

As a professional pet sitter I couldn’t agree more. Things can happen in a minute, more so in a day and the potential for a bad outcome definitely increases with time. I won’t take a new cat vacation client for anything less than 1x/day. You also crystallized what I try to explain frequently about professional sitters who have credentials, experience, certifications, insurance and licensing vs a neighbor kid, hobby sitter or rando that offered to do it for you on fb. Before ANYONE assigns the trust to someone responsible for their pets health, safety, wellbeing and entertainment they should vet candidates very thoroughly. If that’s making you whisper “overkill!”, remember they will also have access to and responsibility for, your home, and anything in it that could go wrong or disappear!!

Last year we had to travel overseas to be with my mother in law, but before buying our flight or making any other arrangements, I needed to find someone who would stay in our home with our two young cats. I prepared and froze food for 36 days and had the person live with us and the cats for a few days and got them used to him feeding them rather than myself. Only this way could I travel with some peace of mind. And when we got back they were their happy usual selves and just as attached to us as when we left.

Last year I was unexpectedly in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. I hadn't planned on being gone so I didn't really prepare. I was grateful to have a friend go by every day to give them food and water and scoop out the litter boxes. She was only able to stay long enough to take care of those things so they were pretty much alone. It was really bad for one of my cats b/c she had belonged to my sister who had passed away less than 6 months before. My other cat basically followed me around and "yelled" at me for about 2 hours when I finally got home.

I park a cat perch right by the window and having top-down, bottom-up blinds allows me to have a blind that’s up by ~8 inches so kitty can see outside. Works well and Kitty even snoozes on his window perch!

My husband and the adult children will take off on errands and she doesn't know I'm in the computer room watching cat videos. We also have a German Shepard. Great information. Confirms many of things I "thought" might be true. We rarely travel. SIGH, routines; retired recently and our four cats will make sure I'm up at 5 a.m.. SIGH double sigh. But it's o.k.. The cats (children) are so much happier having me around. Lesson Learned, I don't train cats, they have trained me. Great joy to now spend more time with.

This was very helpful. The one thing I disagree with is the idea of having them look in a mirror. In my experience cats do not see themselves, their reflections in mirrors. I have tried many times bringing the cat in front of one and NOTHING, no response at all. I also doubt they need to have TV on, they enjoy natural sounds (they hear better than we do) and also just silence and peace. It is very true about their need for routine. My cat will sit and stare at me and then gently meow over and over when feeding time (in his mind) has arrived until I respond. They only are destructive when all else fails.

My church friends look after Lightfoot. They took some photos of him. He wasn't real happy. I'll have to phone my friend and have her let Lightfoot listen to the phone. This video is so helpful - thank you. I have now moved his food station away from his bubble fountain. I take a couple of trips a year. I have a cat door, so he can go in and out, and he often visits my neighbours (I live in a four-plex) and I think he thinks are his uncles! They come in to feed him every morning with his usual food, and make sure his water bubbler is working properly, filling it a needed. When I am at home, I lock his cat door so he can't go out once he is in for the night (I live in a city, but there are sometimes coyotes. I have been thinking about getting a kitten as a playmate, and after having watched this video, I am thinking seriously about it. My cat is friendly with other cats in the neighbourhood, so I think he will welcome a playmate.

If you need a catsitter, your local homeless pet shelter is a great resource. Several volunteers I know do catsitting as a side hustle. They know cat behavior and are fellow cat lovers just like you..

We travel several times a year and always have the same - professional - cat sitter who loves them and looks forward to seeing them during those times. We intentionally adopted a bonded pair (siblings) so that they would not entirely rely on humans for their socialization, sense of security and entertainment. I would definitely recommend not having just one cat. We are away about a week at a time a couple of times a year and for about two weeks in the end of the year. They know we are leaving when the suitcases come out and are curious, but they seem to know that the upside is that they get to see Uncle Larry, who spends a lot of time playing with them. :) Also, cats don't have the same perception of time passing as we do. They notice their owners' scent getting weaker, that's why it's important to leave some "dirty" laundry for them or not change sheets before leaving, something that will tell them that their usual caretakers are not far.

This is the problem I’m facing: I recently retired and want to do both adopting a cat and travel, but I can’t really do both. I don’t have friends in my area and the one that I do have can’t visit several times a day to feed, play, and scoop litter. I’m thinking the only things I can do is either get the traveling out of my system before adopting or paying for an experienced and expensive cat sitter while I’m gone.

Or maybe consider travelling to places you can take your pet with you? It might make the trips more expensive like having to find a place to stay on that accepts pets and you would need the right sort of cat(personally wise that is) that would enjoy going out with you but that you know wouldn’t run away, maybe trained to walk around with a leash outside? I can see a cat enjoying exploring new places instead of being stuck home all the time, he would definitely have an enriching life.

@@CharlesWStricklin I am considering traveling with my cats. TSA requires a certain type of carrier. It's sold in stores but also check their specifications. I hv learned there are pet friendly hotels. Also air bnb's. PetSmart has pet hotels in the states. See if they offer where you live. There are also pet boarding facilities. Research them and read reviews. Take a visit, check out their cleanliness and operations.

I could never board my cats. I always get a pet sitter. I leave the TV on for my cat every time I leave. I assume its better for them than being in complete silence. My cats have a water fountain and muliple litter boxes. I scoop them daily. My cats own the windows which are never open. My elderly cat will yowl if its not with its friends. My cats have a very strict sced too. Now that I have more than 2 cats if I went anywhere I would need someone to stay with them here. They are my babies.

Unfortunately my cat never comes out when the cat sitter comes. She is very shy. My cat sitter does change the litter box and feeds her daily. I know she misses me when I’m gone. I think it would be more stressful if I boarded her.

Cat sitter is perfect. If she is shy not much you can do about that. Boarding, IMO, should be a last resort only if a cat is comfortable with it - and I have not, so far, heard of a single cat that is ok with it

I can promise you, people in high rise apartments in NYC do NOT do this. The few owners I know that have a clear understanding if what is necessary do all of this. Most cat owners do not and it is discouraging.

Automatic feeders and water fountains can malfunction, I've seen it first hand whilst petsitting other peoples pets. Tv with you tube or netflix animal films are really good . A window with a bit of fresh air is also good. Fresh food daily is the best and clean litter boxes so do not go for more than 1 day without a reliable petsitter

How long is too long. I do get a professiona cat carer to come in twice a day, 6 days at the longest. I fret too much and worry..she would freak if I put her in a cattery. She is really scared of everything a rescue cat. I am now retiring and have been a traveller all.my life, i cant now. So how long is too long. I know some people leave their cat for 3 weeks . If I had to I would get a house sitter but thats scary too.

Hey... I stopt with the words that cats can be stimulated in the presence of other cats. Yes some cats like that... other cats are neutral about an other cat in their presence, while the "owner" is on holiday. Most of my cats did not bother so much, als long as my family seperated all cats (as I did) in different rooms, when eating their wet food. I only took about 5 till 10 minutes for my cat to eat what they wanted. But if your family member takes more than about 15 minutes to provide all cats their foods, it will be good.

Never spoke about expensive toys and in other videos I say there is no needed to keep buying new toys, just rotate old ones. A cat wheel lasts forever and if there is enough room in a house for it, it can be useful not only for entertainment but also to help cats with potential weight issues. I mentioned the automatic litter machine because it is out there and people often wonder if it is useful. Would never dream of getting one myself. If you stay away from home for more than one day, a cat sitter is just a must. I never suggest expensive stuff, I just try and provide information to give people some food for thought on what cats like and dislike.
