Early teen here. "Don't ask questions!" This one hurts. It makes us feel like our questions don't matter/are too insignificant. "I'm just looking out for you." NO, this DOESN'T make us feel good or protected. We want to feel independent. When parents say this to us, it makes us feel like little children that need to be watched over. "Because I said so." This ties into "Don't ask questions". We're at the age where we always want to know what's going on. Unless it's particularly sensitive, please tell us. "Stop complaining!" Now, we all complain sometimes. This is perfectly valid when we are specifically trying to complain and aggravate parents. When we're simply voicing our concern, and not rudely? We don't like our concerns brushed off as complaints.
@craftyhands62624 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. Being a pre teen and listening to these will totally hurt. Its just that we are not able to talk to our parents freely about all of this, or even show this vdo to them because they will be like, "Ah! Nothing like that. We don't tell anything to you guys in order to demotivate you, or hurt you." Or, they just laugh it off, which is the most annoying thing ever

Hey, my parents telling me that my 5 younger siblings looked up to me and mimicked everything I did made me a much better person. I was constantly thinking that whatever path I followed, they would try too. So the choices affected not just me, but all of them. Nothing wrong with telling your older children to look at who is watching them.

I have a lot of younger siblings. half and foster siblings, and i'm older than all of them. when my foster mom told me "be a good example for the younger kids" i looked at her and told her "why don't u teach them right from wrong so that way when i make a mistake, they won't follow? with ur logic u should ban tv since the people in the shows u watch r terrible role models". from that day forward, i lived how i chose, and i fell many times, but she was there to help pick me up and the children then learned that it's okay to make mistakes as long as u learn from them

And telling me good job, or saying I’m incredible or whatever wouldn’t add to my stress level. It would actually decrease it because i would get a little time off of constantly worrying about being good enough. That’s reassurance that I AM good enough. That while I should always strive for improvement, im doing well. I don’t see the harm in that.

I see nothing wrong in stating, "I'm (or we're) so proud of you!" , since it truly states how I (we) feel towards my/our child/children. The statement, "Good for you!" although positive, has an air of detachment to it. I've had people (in general, not parents) say this phrase to me and no matter who said it, it always came off as sounding like the person who said it was separating themselves from me by not including how they too felt happy for and connected with me.
@paveljiran89926 жыл бұрын
Kat Kristar : Yeah, we probably think in a similar way. I also don't see anything wrong in saying: "I'm so proud of you!" I wrote a comment which mentioned my point of view for number #4 and #1. I'll copy the comment for you here: It's an interesting video and honestly, I agree with all of the thoughts except number #4 and #1. Reasons why I strongly disagree with number #4 and #1 are described in two following paragraphs. I'll start with number #4. Okay, I understand it's better to focus on the way of achieving the result, rather than just saying "Good job!" But I don't see why you couldn't do both things - saying "Good job!" and then focusing on the way of achieving it. I strongly disagree with that notion you shouldn't praise your child for a good job by showing your reaction. And praising him/her is definitely not in the contradiction with focusing on the way of achieving the result. And now number #1. There is an even more upsetting point of view mentioned in this part of the video. Replacing the sentence "I am so proud of you" by saying "Good for you!" simply doesn't seem warm enough to me. It's almost like saying - "You probably feel good after achieving your goal. I don't care too much but I guess you're happy." I know it's not directly said in this way but it almost looks like saying a stuff like that to me. I would honestly prefer saying something warmer instead - for example: "That's really great you've achieved your goal! You must be so happy! :)"

When my mom told me she was proud of me I actually always felt proud of myself from early childhood on up to even this day! To me it seemed obvious that she basically wanted to say: "Hey, you did that well, you should be proud of yourself!" My mother also told me that a lot when I was insecure about myself and the things I did. She also didn't only recognise actual results, but even if I failed she would still acknowledge how hard I tried. She never even put me down for bad grades, but either felt with me or told me "I know you could have done better." That was hard to hear at the time but honestly: She was right. Although I didn't like hearing it, it was the simple truth. All in all, all these things helped me build my self-esteem and become the person I am today. I guess it really comes down to communication and the actual message the parents want to send to their children using those statements.

@Redfork20006 жыл бұрын
I agree. It's important for teens to know that it's ok to feel sad. It's an emotion like every other, and has a purpose. Parents telling their children to not be sad, to stop crying for no reason is harmful, and it only teaches them to that expressing their emotions is a bad thing and that they must suppress their negative emotions. The title only says "teen" so the video gets more views. Most of the viewership on KZbin is aged around 8~19, so it makes sense for Bright Side to use the word "teen" as opposed to "child." It doesn't help that parents tell their younger children that they're mature for their, either, since they just categorize themselves with older groups of people.

Something you should NEVER say to a teen that suffers from depression/anxiety: "Think positive!"
@SoramimiKeiki6 жыл бұрын
That's something that is for everyone who suffers from that, not only teens.
@sydaleeck8316 жыл бұрын
Dude you always say that. I have depression and I say that to my friends. You can think positive with depression/anxiety. Your only saying not to is because you just don't want to be positive. Not being positive will make others not positive, you have to say that dude.
@lolasaurusrex13506 жыл бұрын
My name is bob saying this phrase makes people think that they aren't meeting social standards or that they aren't good enough for people close to them and it makes them want to strive to improve themselves but they feel that they never can do that so they give up And yes I know this for sure bc I suffer from depression myself and I also have slight anxiety issues too
@hamztergurltv32996 жыл бұрын
Well you can't exactly diagnose your self if you're just a teen it's probably just hormones because you're parents would know and you would show symptoms from like age 10
@sunnysimmons19366 жыл бұрын
Hamzter Gurl TV I'm pretty sure I know I have anxiety if I'm constantly having panic attacks even before I go to a doctor. And I don't think it's " just hormones " but even if it was it doesn't make their feelings any less valid!

Hi, I'm 19 and in college. My mom just said, "I'm proud of you" last night. You guys don't get the point. The fact that they use "I" is the power behind this statement. When you love your family, they are your motivation and when used sparingly, this is one of the most powerful things you can say! I will NEVER say "good for you", a flismy statement with no meat behind it... I think I'll take my parent's pride in me instead thank you very much.

I actually don't agree with what you should say to teens on number four, asking them how they came up with certain details. Sometimes there really isn't any reason, especially for drawings, and I know those questions would really stress me out. Anyways, I've heard all of these statements from my dad!!! I hate it, but I have to deal with it.
@charles86016 жыл бұрын
Willow Draws Asking for details about one's work sounds like a great way to get one into the habit of thinking critically about the choices they're making. The answer doesn't even need to be drawn out, it can just be "I just like how it looks," maybe one would start thinking about why that is and experiment with what colors match and compliment each other or other art aspects, I'm not really into that.
@dbelow_15566 жыл бұрын
Well, Charles, a kid just wouldn't know that, they'd likely be stressed out because(and this is especially the case with teens gping through school where I don't know is never an acceptable answer) they think a short answer like that would be wrong, and make them look silly
@charles86016 жыл бұрын
dbelow _ Then make it clear that a short answer is okay? If the parent and kid already have a good relationship, that wouldn't be a problem. (I say "kid" because it looked like the video was implying they meant kids aged from 5-13 for some of these despite "teens" being in the title)
@reubensarts77876 жыл бұрын
I think a better way to deal with it is to say "Explain the picture (as a whole) to me" or asking what was their favourite part of it or say why you like it. It would encourage the discussion the video is suggesting is needed and is also not the disinterested quick reaction that children would usually receive
@greendog07156 жыл бұрын
I agree, I would prefer a parents honest opinion and advice as opposed to being questioned, I would feel uncomfortable and feel as if they were asking the questions because they don’t like the decisions I made.

#2 kinda brought bad memories. My Aunt died 2 years ago. I miss her so much. I cry myself to sleep thinking of her. I always ask her “Can you see me?” This was a very sad memory in my life. I didn’t want my aunt to die so soon, But everyone dies at some point. My Aunt died at 60 years old. I just hope she can see me from Heaven. I went to her funeral and I cried so much. She will always be my heart. I bet she can see me from Heaven. I was 10 years old when my aunt passed away. Now I am Almost 13. My Aunt is watching me from Heaven. This was a very sad memory for me. My Aunt died in November. November 2018 was kinda a bad day for me. I miss my Aunt. She will always be there for me. I miss my Aunt so much. I will never forget her... Don't say these: "Oh look, these are so cute!" Your teen isn't 5. Most of them are emo and hate cute. "Don't you like it?" If someone expresses a disliking to something, asking "don't you like it?" Puts pressure on your teen to agree with you . When I made the decision of taking what I wanted rather than my mom wanted, I was happy.
