We also lost Wing Commander with origins Systems. Fun fact. Ultima 7 was a middle finger from the devs at Origin to EA knowing the takeover was their inevitable death. The whole game was a not subtle attack on it. From Elizabeth and Abraham villains (EA) and the shapes that led to the evil (a giant triangle, ball and square) along with the motives and dialogue of the bad guys obviously showing the disdain of Origin

Also whenever people start mentioning the companies that EA swallowed, and crushed... it makes me sad... so many really, truly amazing games, and game developers, got caught up in a liberal nightmare machine that runs on the fumes of money makes right. Rest in peace Bullfrog, Bioware, Visceral, and so many, many, many others... Bioware is so fucking close to being just another one on that list that I am already writing them off as dead, they need to truly, and utterly break free from the EA stranglehold, and make a smashing hit next time... Which I do not think they can do under that corporate overlord... EA is a cancer and I hope the company literally burns itself to the ground. Also, thanks Jules, thanks for you just being you, you are great, definitely my favourite at WhatCulture. :)

I used to work 80 - 100 hours per week when I was younger... 12 - 14 hours a day, 7 days a week with the occasional Sunday off. I once worked three consecutive days of 16 hour shifts, and once went 4 weeks without a single day off, just to get one Sunday off then right back into another 3-week stretch. It was fucking awful. No company should ever be allowed to make any employee work more than 10 hours per day, and no more than 6 days per week, end everything beyond 35 hours should be paid double. The workers' health and sanity is worth WAY more than whatever shitty product your greedy company is making. Any CEO or company leader who violates that should be fed to the guillotine. ☭ And before some bootlicker in the back chimes in, it was the middle of the recession and no one was hiring so I couldn't just "find a better job," it was either that or homelessness.

Thanks Jules as a long time gamer, I am disgusted in the behaviour of the suits behind the devs who only see the bottom line. We as the customer can and should make a stand against this by boycotting such companies until they treat all there staff with the respect they deserve and the games that we dont need to pay to win. I for one do not mind waiting longer for titles knowing in my heart that the staff of that company are getting time with there families. just think what games will be like if everyone onboard is in a happy place both emotionally and in the place they work.

You mentioned Westwood getting gutted in #2 but no Command and Conquer sequels in over a decade is EA’s #1 crime in my opinion. Imagine if they had been dropping a new C&C update every year like they do sports games what we would be playing now. Red Alert 3 is still better than most new releases today

This one may be difficult but it's just a suggestion: Games that work better outside of an open-world setting. (Examples: Burnout 3 and Burnout Revenge. I like Burnout Paradise but I prefer the older games because I don't think every game needs to have that "the world is your playground" type of deal.)

Its crazy about EA. How far it has fallen, morally I guess, since its start in the 80s. Was a child of the 70s, so we got out first computer in the 80s, Wang PC clone, dual 5.25 drives to boot! But my first games were all EA from Bards Tale series to Abrams battle tank and the Chuck Yeager flight simulators. These days, I wouldn't piss on EAs headquarters if it was on fire let alone give them money. So sad, has me wondering when their fall started.

As someone working in the industry, I can attest to the crunch. Although I am not currently working for a studio, I have been warned time and time again by the people I network with that proper research into a company will be the difference between literal life and death. It's a bigger issue than any regular consumer knows about. You will find that almost all game companies will use crunch time at any given time during a project. Smaller indie companies are less likely to use this practice and will have more employee-friendly work hours. That comes at the cost of not truly knowing if a project will be successful, the company will be financially stable should there be an incident, or if there will be a contract for a new project any time soon after one is published. Almost every developer I know agrees that we will have to file for unemployment about once a year.

In gaming (and in animation for that matter) it seems like they work crazy hours. And I just wonder from the economics side of it. Do they do it because it's the only way to turn a profit, or is it because these companies are greedy and just want to maximize their profit. Subtle difference but an important one. Either way, peoples health are far more important than me getting my awesome game a few months sooner. But I truly wonder are the margins that slim, or is it just pure greed, because it's easy to assume that it's greed, but it's not uncommon to hear about gaming companies shutting down (for a lot of different reasons but still).
