Also he makes the comment about "having to turn into a man to become more powerful" which is outright incorrect. Zelda did not turn into Shiek to be stronger, she turned into Sheik so that Ganon wouldn't recognize her and allowed her to help Link. This is shown twofold as most of Sheik's help comes in the form of wisdom and advice, which is not gender dependent. And more so in the end when Sheik drops his guard and reveals himself as Zelda only to be INSTANTLY captured by Ganon without him even being present!

That’s an interpretation. Like their description in the manual said, they’re Zelda’s "alter-ego". It’s a whole new personnality that Zelda crafted to hide herself, a personnality which is the one of a young man. I’m not talking split personnality or trans identity here, i’m just saying that Sheik could simply be a male character, played by a female "actor". Sheik is not Zelda in the same way that Spiderman is not Tom Holland. At least, that’s my interpretation of the situation as it was presented in OOT

@@caihly2443 Alter ego tends to commonly mean disguised identity yknow that right?
@caihly24434 жыл бұрын
Zangelin the world "alter ego" was literally created to talk about split personnality disorder, and is still now used to designate another personnality that is distinct from the main one. An alter ego is a new personnality, who can very well have another gender. To get back to the example of acting I used before, know that it was common in the time of Shakespeare that male actor would play female roles (maybe it was systematic but I’m not 100% sure). Does that mean that Gertrude of Denmark is a man because she is played by a man? No, she has been created as a female, and is the actor’s "alter ego", despite being a different gender. This is so obvious it’s not even funny.
@Kanethedragon4 жыл бұрын
Lurony Personally I say it’s not this case when considering OoT from a 90s Japanese perspective. The idea of Sheik being male stems from a mix of Aonuma and the devs wanting to hide her identity from the player as well as the in-lore focus of hiding Zelda from Ganondorf to not obtain Wisdom, combined with the fact that Japan in those times were a very appearance-focused society when it comes to identity. If you dressed like a man and hid your features well enough, for all intents and purposes, you are a man. A dissociative identity/alter ego is much different in context, as generally speaking you can’t just “switch” these identities at will like Zelda does with Sheik, and to put that into context, here’s some examples from around the same time as OoT that make use of alter egos/dissociative identities. The first being Male Shiki from Garden of Sinners/Kara no Kyoukai, whom is an identity that was created by Shiki’s parents to hide her power to A. Prevent accidents, and B. Keep maguses and other existences from learning about her abilities. And generally speaking, Male Shiki does nothing to change his appearance to fit his identity, which I’ve noticed is a common line in Japanese media that portray this properly, so in many cases he’d be misidentified as normal, female Shiki. Now with the second character, we got Boogiepop from Boogiepop And Others/Boogiepop wa Waranai. As with Shiki, Boogiepop is a male identity within the character Touka Miyashita who exists to defend order in the world and appears whenever threats pop out. Generally speaking he conducts himself as he were a male and uses male pronouns, but appearance wise he doesn’t do anything to change much besides wear his outfit to be an identifiable “shinigami” so as to cause threats to act when rumours pop that he’s around. If one were to get close rather than see him from afar at night, he would also be very quickly identified as Touka from standard people that wouldn’t think of dissociative identity playing a part in the character. Likewise, with both characters, they don’t just flip a switch at will and go back to their normal selves, it’s something that happens organically when the situation calls for them to exeunt. This, as I mentioned previously, is in stark contrast to the Zelda/Sheik scenario and I can say with 110% certainty that this was not Aonuma and Miyamoto’s intention when creating OoT.

Ok, well, there’s multiple variables to it. Firstly, it doesn’t make sense for her to wear black tights specifically. She’s a light blade (I’m saying blade to make things simple) and is predominately white. I know her personality isn’t all light (if you know what I mean), which I suppose the black tights can represent, but it just clashes with the rest of her attire. But if we’re excluding personality, the artwork of her in the tights is pretty bad at showing she’s wearing tights. It just looks more like her legs are black, which is what they did so....... but her in-game model in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 with the tights is great. Black tights do make Mythra more sexy, but for the most part how they represent Mythra with the tights, it just doesn’t seem right. Her exposed thighs are beautiful

@@Bailey_West Yes and no. The age of consent in Japan is technically 13, however there are still laws in place that prevent large age gaps from being formed. Being 18 and up while trying to get together with a 13 year old can and will lead to either a misdemeanor or felony. Essentially the age of consent being 13 only really applies if both parties are 13 or slightly above, large age gaps do still lead to legal actions. 18 is still pretty much the "real age of consent" in Japan. Not only is this a game that, as you said, stereotypes everyone - Japan included, mind you - but also, it is no different from the stereotype of Irish people drinking beer a lot, which they just gleefully embrace for shits and giggles, not unlike Mexicans embracing the poncho and sombrero stereotype, which is why Mario wearing those in Odyssey was also not offensive to them. It is up there with Bear Hugger's stereotyping, and the only reason why it was censored was to keep alcohol references out of the game for game rating reasons, not because it is "offensive".
