The UFC sells stories. They have to balance talent with marketability to squeeze the most out of their promotion. For every Usman, there's a stockpile of Colbys and Jorges whose records have nothing to do with the opportunities they're given. Perhaps nothing demonstrates this better than Khabib's last 5 fights. He finally gets the vacant title and goes immediately against McGregor, and the "hype" and "drama' around that fight came entirely from McGregor and that fight made Khabib a star. Look at Pereira: Billed as the Izzy Killer, totally riding on Izzy's fame from a promotion standpoint until the fight actually happened, and now Alex is arguably the hotter commodity despite his age suggesting he has been good enough to be a UFC champ for a while. They did a dry run of this with Gane and Francis, talking about how they had a past in France. The Sean O'Malleys and Jon Joneses of the UFC are the true outliers, where they bring the skill and the drama. As much as Jon is clearly avoiding Tom, it also goes to show that Jon is aware of what he brings to the table and the UFC want him to beat up Stipe for an easy payday. The fights aren't rigged, but the matchmaking is.

People forget that the UFC was ready to push Aspinall but he said he wanted to take his time and fight lower ranked fighters. The promotion moved forward and Tom screwed himself. Alex Peirera didn’t go this path. He took big fights pushed to him and he has never had to wait.

Dana White, the kind of person to quote you on something he heard someone else say you said 🥴 sidenote: We get it, you want Tom as undisputed, but we heard all your arguments 20 times before. And discrediting Gane as a strong contender, after he was interim himself, lost the uni very close and rebounded against a streaking Tai?! Nah! Do I like the fact, that Jon wants his legacy fight with Stipe at all cost? No, but I can understand it, since this will most likely be Stipes last fight and he has the most defenses in UFC. And so far Tom has beaten 1 former champ in Arlovski, 18 years after his reign. Tom might become the most dominant heavyweight ever (and imho he has all the tools to do that), but for right now his resume cant stand up to Stipes.
