Just for me: 1. Invite a variety of people 2. Talk about the book (people tend to get off-topic); look up trivia about the author 3. Change it up (i.e. read different dramas, invite different people, watch a movie) 4. Don't be a jerk about a book 5. Don't pick books that are too long (under 400 pgs) 6. Challenge yourself 7. Set your next book & meeting before you leave 8. Accept that some people won't finish the book 9. Play with the theme of the book 10. Check out your local book store (if you're trying to find a bookclub)

#8 There were six people in the bookclub, only three people had read the book completely. One guy was halfway through reading and the other two said they were too busy to even crack the cover. The two who hadn't even cracked the cover would not shut up. I don't attend bookclub to give you an oral book review, and why are you two arguing with me concerning my opinion when you can't even form your own opinion since you were too busy to read but did make the time to attend. Rule #8: If you haven't read the book completely, sit to the side and do not engage in the discussion. Thank you.

I'm a guy and am just starting my own book club. It's so hard to find other guys who read, so it will be mostly female attendees but oh well. I hope I find other guys but even if I don't we'll have a great time. We picked Sharp Objects from Gillian Flynn as our first book so not the hardest topic but I think a book that can lead to a great discussion. Thanks for the tips

Hi Marko, I started a man's book club on Facebook called, THE MEN'S BOOK CLUB, INTERNATIONAL in October 2018. We have 13 members. It hasn't been easy to have engagement and participation from the members. Don't know how to get them or others to engage and participate in the book club. By the way thank you for sharing those tips on your video. > facebook.com/groups/themensbookclub/ ......... (5/12/19 Sunday @prmentor )

I'm curious if you still have your online book club going. If so, do you use Facebook or meet via Skype or Zoom or some other way? Do you ever have authors attend for a Q&A? If so, I'd be interested. You can reach me at brad@wbradfordswift.com. I can either answer questions about one of my 26 books or speak about life as an indie author and then answer questions. My books are also available here: payhip.com/PorpoisePublishing . Best of luck with your club. Stay healthy and safe.

A poll was taken, we decided on the book and now...bleh! My motive, intent, vision for this club was (and still is) soo precise yet I cannot seem to garner enough support/enthusiasm. Hellllp!! 🥴

I’ve been in a very cohesive book club since 2005. We meet every other month at someone’s house except December when we go to a nice hotel for afternoon tea. We are an educated adult group and pick interesting books, but I’ll admit it’s more social group than book discussion. I think that’s why it’s lasted for almost 20 years though. We do talk about the book but we’re also friends (old and new) hanging out. I think people knowing and liking each other, and wanting to see each other, and having a good time, is what makes people want to get together. Being too rigid about limiting discussion to the book would kill it for us.

You are probably only about 20 years old or less. I wanna start one too, but I wanna gauge if people of my age 52 would join my club. I once started a book club when I was 40 and starbucks loved it, but it ended up becoming a dating club and they left the club as couples. Thinking ... who was fooled? Probably me, or them missing out on knowledge.

I like your question about men and book clubs. I'm starting up a book club and want to make it enjoyable for everyone so that it'll be 'sticky'. My research brought me to your video. My first thought was that men are visual. I think we'd be drawn more by a movie club where we watch a great movie followed by discussion than by reading. The (few) times when I've experienced a story in book and film formats, I've always been disappointed by the choices made by the producers of the films. However, if I don't read the book, I can just enjoy the movie without knowing what I'm missing. Also, life is short, and the time commitment - movie vs book - is a big factor. Not trying to speak for 'men', just me, when I say that my interests are things like computers, business/money, sports, religion (regular church meetings kind of fulfill the 'book club' slot for this one)... and I don't have much free time left for fiction books. The club I'm starting is for entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs. This is something that I believe will have near equal appeal to men and women. #BTO17

I've started 2 book clubs -- 1 is for my 10 yo daughter and other primary school age children. They each bring what they have been reading the past week and share about it. It's been great fun and they all have gotten so much more comfortable with public speaking. With covid 19 isolation, I moved it online to zoom and am still getting the numbers. The second is for adults, meets monthly and is specifically themed to books on the topics of homeschooling and learning. This one has been more challenging to get up and going. Many people have joined the fb group indicating interest, but I've only had 3 and then 5 show up at the 2 meetings so far. It is still early days so I'm not giving up. Again, we are meeting via zoom which is its own set of challenges. Cheers

I'm an indie author with 26 books in my backlist and a reader since the 4th grade and that's a long time. Strangely, I've never been a part of a book club. Being a bit gregarious by nature unlike many authors who are more introverted I'd enjoy speaking to book clubs and I'm comfortable skyping as well as using Zoom or Facetime which is what brought me to your video. Well done. I learned a lot. Thanks for taking the time to do it. I think you actually got up to about 13 good tips.

I’m currently in a small club right now finding inspiration for better discussions. I think that there are many female-dominated book clubs simply because it is a safe space for like-minded people to express their honest views. There’s simply less freedom for this discourse among women globally. I think there are few only-male book clubs because it prevents people that benefit from status quo ideology from seeing beyond their individual perspective. I think men are often in co-ed clubs because they gain insight into experiences and beliefs outside of their own. Thanks for the great video!

What a great idea and time to start a book club. Start our kids reading early! I started in the fourth grade when my new next-door-neighbor felt sorry for my single mom who I was bugging to come out and play with me. Mrs. Crabtree bought me a stack of books from her job. She was the children's librarian in Raleigh NC. It worked. I quit bugging my mom and became a life long reader. I'm now an indie author. Do you still have your book club going? Do you ever have authors attend for a Q&A? If so, I'd be interested. I think my Zak Bates Eco-adventure series would be of interest to your middle graders. You can reach me at brad@wbradfordswift.com. I can either answer questions about one of my 26 books or speak about life as an indie author and then answer questions. My books are also available here: payhip.com/PorpoisePublishing . Best of luck with your club. Stay healthy and safe.

Hey Chandler, I just found your video whilst doing research for the male book club I'm setting up and found it pretty interesting what you said. It's me and some friends from different groups, as well as a friend or two of theirs that I'm not really acquainted with. As a few of us live in different parts of the country it's a virtual book club, we have our first discussion next month on fb Messenger, discussing Fight Club (breaking the first and second rule, I know). I decided to set this group up myself out of frustration because I couldn't find a book group that suited my needs, but I also was wondering why there are so few male book groups.

I am a male and I have just started a book club. All my members are female however, and I am not trying to get with any of them except my fiance. Quite plainly, do not know many other males that read.

Just found this. Hope to make an on-line book club. Maybe I’ll be one of the few male-lead clubs.

How do you get the shy members of the group to participate and feel comfortable speaking their idea?

I would love to be a part of a book club, and honestly...I don't have a good excuse as to why I'm not searching for one here in the Austin area. I've done reading challanges with my friends before, where they pick a book and we read it and talk about it and then I pick a book and we read it and talk about it. Usually these friends don't live in the same city, so it is a virtual or telephonic event. I wouldn't mind doing an in person one though.

I know of two separate book clubs, one that's all women and one that's all men. Apparently they read completely different books. But, I definitely get what you mean, it definitely seems like a female dominated type of get together. I've got no ideas about why though. One of these days I intend to join one myself. Once I've settled in a place for more than a few months at a time, I'll start looking around. Good suggestion about starting at a book store.

Do the guys read nonfiction? That's my perception of all male book clubs. And I understand that even less--why do men of a certain age turn their back on fiction? But I"ve also asked men why they can't then discuss non-fiction books. The response has been that they aren't reading narrative non-fiction therefore discussion wouldn't be interesting. WHY!?? Oh man, I just don't understand this.

I definitely think they tilt more towards nonfiction, without completely excluding fiction. Don't know why either. It definitely takes a lot more work to convince even my dad (who recommended all of the great scifi classics to me when I was a teenager) to pick up a fiction book.

Never been part of a book club. Prager U starting a national one for conservatives. Need tips about how you can get a hold of the book needed without spending 20 bucks a book and return to not clutter a 1500 sq ft home. I can't read the latest and greatest only what I find at the library or thru Hoopla.

Today's most accomplished and fulfilled people (around the globe) are regular people that incorporate the joy of reading into their routines. Rather they're learning, laughing or both, what set them apart is that they've discovered their favorire genre(s). They spend a half hour/day exercising the magical power of the mind. But why read several books when you can have a book series that keeps your favorite characters flourishing over several books? Who'd want to grow attached to characters living in one book when there's an extended series avaliable with a lovable cast? If a single series could have you rollin' on the floor, flirting, learning, relating, loving, sexing, texting and begging for more, would you add reading to your life? What if such a book series had the ability to take you places deep within yourself, issue you an evolved sense-of-self, a spiritual makeover and could prove to you that you are a god.... Would you be interested in that series? Of course we would. "A GODDESS AMONGST US" isn't just a "good read", it'a an epic experience. In this exciting new series, we begin with young lovers who meet, fall in love and conceive a sensitive baby girl. Main character: Michelle stops speaking at age 6 (selectively). We experience her heartfelt toddler years before she takes her world by surprise. At 19yrs old, Michelle literally jumps into the hearts of millions as a backup dancer for her adopted brother. While dancing on a syndicated talent show, Michelle shocks her world with an unbelievable demonstration that can only be described as godly. A modern dispensation falls in love with the small, wide-eyed delight. A sweet, soft 'natured teen becomes a household name as she performs many jaw-dropping miracles that controdict physics and leaves masses of spectators speechless. Time and time again Michelle and her closest friends travel the globe making televised appearances to dance, party and baffle academia manifesting her imagination. (Later in this saga) She facilitates an ALL-GIRL school of spirit science's to teach 333 girls/woman how their feminine principle is divine. This creates concerns for government bodies and upper echelons that would rather women not to be spiritually empowered. Michelle reveals human potential to be far beyond the laws that govern physics. She proves to be an amazingly telepathic as the story progresses through a Fijian beauty who's rare gift allows her to hear Michelle's unspoken speech. This series will leave you awe-inspired. Shorty's wisdom will lovingly change you forever by teaching you what ALL academia denies you to know. This novel series will bust your gut with laughter, warm your heart with sentiments and deliver life-altering esoteric insight like no other in its genre. You don't have to be a reader to be swept away in this series. You don't have to be a scholar to enjoy Michelle's hugs, kisses and boy-toying girlfriends. This title has MAJOR MOTION PICTURE potential from its very first chapter. You're invited to love, danca and learn from Michelle. Connect to the deepest parts of yourself that makes you a god. This is your new favorite on-going book series. Michelle guarantees it. WARNING: This is only the first part--of many--ripe with cuteness, kisses, colorful characters and practical personalities. Feel free to jump right in. To my readers, fans and future fans. I love you. I love you so much. I don't believe we have to know somebody personally before we love them spiritually. My goal is to bring Michelle to life as vividly as she still exists in my lucid dream state. Her affections, her vibrancy, her influence and her lessons are all pieces to an epic ongoing 10 book series. Books #1 & 2 will be availible tommorrow via your Amazon app for downloading. Episode 3 is on the way. I'm excited that I decided to so this. Michelle's a sensitive gift to the world from a sensitive man. My name is Robert Lee Laster. Sure: I could fill paragraph space with interesting things about me, but I am not the star of this feature. That's not my goal. My pleasure is knowing Michelle is also living you as she's been living me all these years. It's reasonable to expect a new full-length episode every four months. Thank you so much for your positive Amazon Reviews. HeartsHugs&Kisses - Robert
