My best tips: 1. Thrift stores 2. Old book shops 3. Find Collectors 4. Flea markets Actually got some good key issues from these tips like X force #1, uncanny Xmen #131 (first appearance of Emma Frost), Wolverine #8 1st series (appearance of hulk) all for a dollar or two

Don't forget pawn shops, ive found comics at quite a few for under a dollar, including finding at one time almost a full run of Frank Millers Daredevil issues 171 to 188 for 50 cents each

@@brickgamingygo yeah not big on pawn shops, but about a year ago I found a batman adventures #12 (first appearance of Harley Quinn) for legit a dollar, pawn shops don't really see any value in books and most people would just sell them electronics for more money.

My strategy to build an old/rare comics collection was to take a time machine back to 1970s and 1980s me with a big box of mylars and tell myself to bag the bejeezus out of my stash. Man, am I glad future me made kid me seal up all those Miller Daredevils, Simonson Thors, and Claremont X-Men. Gotta love the classics.....

Nice comments and pretty good advice for people who collect comics because they enjoyed reading them. I honestly think that the point of a CGC'd book was that the comic has been sealed and will never be read again! If a collector was actively looking for an old issue, it's likely that they'd like to actually enjoy the book! One of the nice things about getting a mid-grade silver age issue is to take in the house ads and bullpen bulletin page at the time.

I used to collect comics way back in the late 70's to the early 90's & just got back into it last year (found I have some nice 10k -20k comics)! You got some really good advice & I agree with quite a bit of what you said. The only thing I would say..#1 should be research, research & more research! Without that you'll be dead in the water & a guppy that every shark is going to take a bite! Go on line & research what people are selling, what is popular & what COULD be hot with all the upcoming movies & shows but, above all else, what price ranges for each grading 9.8 down to .5! If you don't do that, you'll overpay & get taken advantage of! Then your collecting becomes a burden rather than enjoyable!

And hey, if you can sell a few CGC comics and use the money to expand then it's just like trading comics for comics ! :)

Another good video on the subject. I have to agree on Ebay, I have been a member since 2002. I have never been stiffed by a Ebay comic book seller. Whats nice is that you can save your searches and check every day for new listings.I still have Amazing Spider-Man 129 in my searches from years ago.As far as CGC graded books I admit that I have a few but they were bought at what I think were reasonable prices but I also prefer raw. We have a pretty big comic shop near me but I have never bought a book from him, I did have a rather large non comic Batman collection that he bought from me and what I thought was a fair price Last is and this goes for any area of collecting, we are only here for a short time, the old saying that you cannot take it when you go holds true. So buy what you like, enjoy the heck out of it, its a hobby, its supposed to be fun.

I feel blessed that there is a place in City of Industry called Frank and Sons. It's like a comic convention 3 days a week. I avoid comic stores and Fleabay with a passion! The other thing is the localized little conventions instead of the larger venues because I feel that you can make better deals. One great thing that I did when I was a kid was the dollar bins in N.J. in the late 70s since I acquired most of my very early Spider-Mans in Dollar and $3 boxes.

I only buy essentials. They are about $8-10 dollars each for over 500 pages of comics. I have most comic book stories from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s for about $.80 cents per story. Early Fantastic 4, X-men, Avengers, Thor and Spider-Man. Huge amount of Kirby art. The only way to know the stories. Marvel and DC. 😎🇺🇸

I find that comic marts are the best place to make great deals, l like my books in the highest grade at a great price. This Sunday l picked up DD 55 for $11, l saw a lower grade on eBay for $40. ASM 50 l got that a few months ago an it took 10 years to find the price an condition l wanted.

Great stuff! I would say that 95% of my collection are of those characters/series that I've enjoyed since my childhood! Such things as X-Men (general) as well as specific characters such as Bishop and Magneto. Also on my list is Dr. Strange, Thunder Cats, Jonny Quest, Space Ghost. Aliens and the the list goes on! Those have a special meaning to me and I buy them strictly for nostalgia purposes. I don't see parting ways with them unless absolutely necessary! Speaking of lots, I just got 15 of the 16 issues of the standalone Bishop comic book series for much less than if I tried to get them all separately! I got a really cool surprise when I found out that one my X-Men #1 (1992) Storm/Beast variant was signed on the inside by Joe Rosas (Colorist). I don't think the online shop that sold it me knew as I got it for like $4 in NM condition. I most definitely don't plan on parting ways with that one! :-)

Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting. That sounds incredible, but it is very likely a reprint. Very close replicas of the original have been reprinted over the years. There are fewer than 100 original copies of Action comics #1 left. Its scarcity, desirability, and pop cultural significance is the reason why it goes for such high prices. Even lower grade copies usually fetch 6 figures.

This video reminds me that I need to contact my local-ish dealer that sells books at reasonable prices, as I want to collect some older books. Your point about collecting what you like and are interested in is what is important, price/value should be a limiting factor, not a goal. I need to look into minor water damaged books, where you can get an otherwise amazing condition books at a good price. I think I can handle cutout if it's not on the cover or story breaking. However if it means I can get an amazing expensive book for cheap, I'll take it. Comic book stores often will have FMV comics and the occasional decent deal, it depends on the shop itself, but I do agree it's not a good source.

Geekery with Dante D. . Most of the flea markets near me either get picked clean, don't have any, or priced to high for condition and issue. My favourite memory is buying books from a flea market as a kid, nothing valuable, but a reasonable price for issues I thought were interesting to me at the time. My only regret was not buying more.

I love tor video and I'm not being rude. Crossing the Rubicon means when you've made a difficult decision and cannot go back once you've acted in said desicion. Example, Caesar The Rubicon was the official landmark border of Rome proper. He marched his army against his own country an act of treason and rebellion,and once he crossed the river he couldn't go back. For better or worse

I've had some minor luck, its usually thru auction and generally it depends on the key. I do a lot of searches with misspelling or ending soonest and ive been able to pick up a few keys in lots or runs at low prices, but generally 99.9999% of the time I find nothing and usually ur still paying a high amount on the key. Also id recommend last minute bidding very late in the evening between 1 and 3 am where ur more likely to win. Thats just my 2 cents

Besides what you've mentioned, I can think of three other situations where it can make sense to purchase comics from a local comic shop (LCS). None of these are necessarily common occurrences, but they can and do happen... 1. You're interested in material that isn't worth much money, and the shop owner has deliberately priced it low to "move it out the door" because he/she knows from experience that there isn't much customer demand for it -- reprints, oddball titles, coverless comics, beat-up comics, less popular genres, etc. (Example: I routinely find and purchase coverless 1960s Marvel super-hero comics for $3 apiece at my LCS because I'm one of the few customers there who's into "beater" comics.) 2. You know the market for a particular comic better than the person who priced it, and realize that the comic is underpriced -- examples might include lesser-known key issues, emerging hot comics, issues with one-off interior work by a popular artist, items that are not comic books but are related to comics fandom, etc. (Example: I paid $4 apiece for a Golden Age aviation comic and a 1962 issue of Millie the Model, both in nice condition, found in the "Miscellaneous" box at an otherwise pricey comic shop, when I traveling cross-state a couple of years ago.) 3. You've established a relationship with your LCS owner, and the owner offers you a great deal on something he/she knows you'll like, for the sake of building customer loyalty. (Example: The owner of my LCS had just purchased a huge run of reprinted Will Eisner Spirit material and made a point of offering it to me for $100 because he thought I might dig it. I bought it.) Edited to add: 3.1 Now that I think about it, in the Eisner reprint deal I mentioned, the LCS owner hadn't done any serious work toward bagging/boarding the material when he offered it to me. There must have been about 100-125 items in the lot. So, one more uncommon-but-not-unheard-of scenario that gives you reason to visit your LCS is, "you might score a good deal on a large-size lot because it somehow saves the LCS personnel a bit of time and trouble" :)

Great Video! a realistic one, the problem for me is that I not live in USA or Canada, so my only source to buy is eBay and I know you tell that your 80% of comics are based on ebay but I think the collectors that have more expensive comics NEVER pay that inflated ebay prices, all buy for cheap in local Thrift stores, Old book shops etc... they hunt for cheap and later sell or trade for tons of money, so I don't have access to that. You say that you found lots, where? ebay too? you buy lots on ebay??? I think is hard buy lots on ebay, because everyone see the comics titles, so if one is expensive, many people bid on.
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 жыл бұрын
Hello there! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I actually agree with you. In recent years, the deals on eBay have been few and far in between. In recent years I have not really been purchasing a lot of comics because they are becoming ever increasingly more expensive. I started collecting comics hardcore in 2011 and tirelessly searched eBay for deals. There were many deals to be found back then, and I was able to build most of my collection from eBay. I stopped buying comics in mid 2017 as they are just way too expensive now. Tthe deals I used to find on eBay are becoming way more scarce. So at the end of the day you are right, the days of eBay deals I think are over. I’m sure you can still find the odd deal here and there but it takes a lot of time to search and monitor eBay. If you have any other questions let me know. Thanks for watching and commenting!

hi Dante, thanks; so there's no ways to buy in less prices than ebay now? what about CGC forum or tons of facebook groups? but well if everybody based his prices on ebay is the same crap than buy it on ebay, the goal of buy it outside ebay is get better prices than ebay. Is sad that market is inflated, buy comics is not a hobby anymore, now is a business.

Yeah, it really sucks that the market is so inflated. Even 90s comics which were once worthless are now increasing in price. Although the deals are fewer now, there are still deals on eBay, you just have to monitor the site and the listings very closely.

What I do, I buy physical comic books and never read them but every book I buy I also download in a digital form and read at least once there. Don’t know if it’s legal or not (website still isn’t blocked by my provider so I guess it’s legal) and at this point I don’t really care because I bought the physical book as well. This way I have a collection I love safely stored, have a mirror collection on an external HDD I can read without being careful all the time and it also serves as a database (with pictures, proper names, numbers and grades the actual books are, sorted in files). I have to say I do not download digital comic books from which I don’t have a physical counter-part.

The reason you don't care about CGC isn't because you are not a speculator, it is because you don't care about the grade of the books you collect. Some of us actually DO care, and having a 3rd party, who isn't involved in the sale, impartially grade the books eliminates the negotiations that happen in the comic shops you want to avoid because you feel they are overpriced. That probably is why you feel they are overpriced, they are actually usually fairly priced because the seller actually knows and understands the value. Pulling a Uncanny X-men 266 for $20 is obviously a steal, and lots are great places to get steals. Another example you share is X-men #1, which is basically a dollar bin books, upwards of $5 in perfect condition. As other people commented, that book should NEVER have been slabbed! Exactly for the reason you suggest - it's not valuable, it's actually the MOST common comic ever created, regardless of how good it is. The cheapest cost you can get a book graded is about $19, plus another few bucks for shipping (obviously the more you ship the lower the cost per book). So now that minty $5 book has to have a $25 surcharge for the grading/shipping just to break even. So yeah, that's a horrible deal. But let's say I'm on a different budget than you and I actually do spend more than $50 on books. Let's say I am in the market for a Nyx #3. A 9.0 is $580, while a 9.8 is almost $1000. Now to you, who doesn't care about the finer details, it's just a NM and if you saw what the dealer thinks is a $1000 book, you laugh and walk out. Forget super high, let's say I want an Giant-size X-men #1. Do you feel comfortable grading the difference between a 4.0 and a 6.5? I don't doubt you could 100 times out of 100 tell the difference, but can you look at a book, know it's 5.5 and know if you are getting a good deal or taken because the seller thinks it's a 7? See these things really matter when you get out of the dollar bins.

I love raw books as well. I have a TTA 35 that was a book I had considered sending to CGC. I have never sent in a book before and did not expect to be spending 300+ NZ dollars for a plastic case and a couple peoples opinons on the books grade 🙄.

I disagree with the concept of the bargain bin being a place where you will never find anything exclusive. The idea that its not worthy of your time is not accurate. The nice thing about comic collecting is that its always changing. If a character grows in popularity then sometimes the issues will jump in price.. or lets say the MCU introduces a new villain.. now the comic where that villain debuted is now going to rise in price. Dont disregard the bargain bin.

totally agree with you on cgc, I don't own any either and from what I can see the company has some problems, raw books sell better as do mid grade comics as far as back issues go and I know from buying that all I have to do is look at it and I can determine if I like the condition its in lol I don't need to pay someone to tell me that but ill admit the cases are nice

do you think there any must haves for a starting collection that arent like super expensive (i`m just 16 and unemployed lmao)? I have some smaller issues and I really want some good issues but I`m ehhh at judging if something is overpriced. I can go up to the 100s but would rather not. (that may seem to small of a margin oh well) if not any issues/ arcs you would recommend to read in general?

I just came across a co worker who wife is looking to take their closet space back. I had to spend $100 on a U-Haul to grab 18 long boxes. I’m process of selling 15 of them to my LCS but the 3 I’m keeping is nothing but keys!!!

Step 1: decide what you love, and stick to it. I can’t honestly remember when I got my first comics, was before I could read. I’ve been distracted and suckered a zillion times into buying ‘collectibles’ related to my interests, instead of investing the whole time in my actual passion. Now, decades later I have a full room of McFarland’s, X-Toys, Lego, Funko ‘stuff’ to trade/sell for the comics I knew I wanted all along. # worktodo

This video isn't particularly for me it's for those who are collecting single issues and I'm just starting and I collect more omnbinuses and trade paperbacks and such because I collect them to read them and I hate being left on a cliffhanger and having to buy the next issue I like that collection books usually collect a full story arc for me to read. Anyway regardless this was very helpful thank you I will say though I know a comic book store around 2 hours away from me and in my experience they generally have reasonable prices for omnibus books and such I've seen they can range from like 30$ to 100$ which is also usually the range on amazon as for ebay idk I don't particularly trust ebay much but I will eventually look at prices there

@Dante19883
@Dante19883 6 жыл бұрын
Very true! I’ve noticed that eBay is becoming used more and more for pricing. However, that is to our detriment. I have found that books are always priced higher on eBay than in the guide. I don’t blame the sellers as there are a lot of fees involved with selling on eBay, but ultimately it sucks for consumers. Thanks for commenting and watching!

@Dante19883
@Dante19883 7 жыл бұрын
I actually don't get them in Canada. I order them directly from the company. The company is E. Gerber. Unfortunately you have to call them as you can't order online, but they have good service. Word of warning, shipping to Canada is a little pricey, but if you're interested here is their number. 1-800-79-Mylar If you leave somewhere near a US border, I would have it shipped to a buddy's US location and go pick it up. Much cheaper. I live near a US border so I send all my stuff to the US and go pick it up.

Pappy Palpatine . I know this more than a year after your post, but You can also check with you local comic shop as they are available through diamond distributors that distribute new comics. They will likely mark it up a bit as they need to make money too, often $2-4.

Overall good vid, but not buying a graded/CGC book is silly. Even if not purchasing for investment reasons if you want a book that is guaranteed to be of a certain quality i'd much rather have a CGC graded book regardless of the subjective nature of grading. At least when purchasing you can rely on a standard vs risking a raw....resale again have a benchmark vs none. Pay the extra to know what you have. I've bought many graded books, raw i had graded, and raw i kept as such. Its a case by case decision, but a blanket statement to avoid graded books is silly

Thanks for checking out the video! I can appreciate your view in CGC totally. I can see value in their system. Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah, opinions on this vary greatly. Some people are die-hard CGC and others don't care for it. I am one of those who doesn't care much for CGC. I find that when I am shopping for books, the CGC'd ones are always outrageously priced even in comparison to ones that are ungraded and in a similar grade. Plus I like being able to read the comic :)
