Giardia is a possibility in the Canadian Rockies, even at higher elevations. Please don't refill your water from mountain streams.
@sarahd826 жыл бұрын
Evange may I ask why I have always been told they are safe to drink from
@Evange6 жыл бұрын
In other regions of the world it can often be assumed that fresh running water, where there is no human development to dump sewage upstream, is safe to drink. However in the Canadian rockies, animals can be carrying giardia, which can be passed to humans. This includes all animals, even those found exclusively at higher elevations (pikas, marmots, ptarmigans), and even water that appears clean and running can have fecal contamination from these animals. I'd be more interested to know where you got the idea that drinking the water was safe? Nether Parks Canada nor Travel Alberta recommend drinking water from mountain streams, in fact both warn against it.

As a Canadian I feel terrible that they gouge tourists by charging $14 for sandwiches. That's probably at least 40% more than it would be anywhere else. I ended up buying a tea at Moraine Lake and I think it cost me around $5 when the very most it would cost anywhere else in Alberta is $2.50 so ya taking your own food to those places is good advice. You could easily stop at a grocery store in Canmore or even Banff and pick up some food to take for way cheaper!
