I would love a bunch of videos on languages like Chinese and Japanese, where learning vocabulary is not nearly as easy as romance languages you’re having to contend with multiple scripts in the case of Japanese as well as Chinese with all the different meaning capabilities of those characters and that makes word learning much more difficult even out of the gate because you can’t even read the damn text or letters in this case

Absolutely. I feel like I spend more time learning *how* to learn Japanese than actually spending on learning Japanese. I suppose there's this worry I have where I want to avoid any and all mistakes by learning in the "most efficient" way possible and not waste any of my time, but I've come to accept that mistakes are going to be made and that's just part of the learning process. The best thing you can do is just dive into it and gradually work on improving your foundational understanding until you reach a point where you can break into the intermediate level and beyond.

I've really found it good to get listening practice by listening to dual English and target language short stories... just search on youtube like Japanes / English dual listening and you can hear short stories read back to you, one sentence in English, then same sentence in Japanese etc... it's really a great passive listening way to absorb some of the langauge 😊 anyone else here time poor like me?! Haha.

Lots of good advice, here - thanks Steve. I’d add that I wouldn’t recommend too much time learning grammar, unless it’s in the target language. Vocabulary and common sentence patterns are much more important.

Whenever I get discouraged with my learning I always turn on one of your videos Steve. Thank you for the insight. I trust your advice since you have learned multiple languages to varying degrees and your learning style has been working for you consistently through the years. Sometimes I do too much but I remember that your style is very relaxed and chill and is very reasonable. Appreciate the time spent on videos like these.

I work an erratic schedule on night shift so my study time is kind of the “get it while you can” approach. Some days I study a lot and others, I’m lucky to get five minutes. I do make a point to read at least three times a week and to schedule a speaking lesson at least once a week. When I’m fatigued from nights and don’t feel like studying, I generally will watch a movie. The two most important things are to just spend time with the language and have fun while learning. I’ve picked up so many words passively just by watching a movie or reading an easy book when I didn’t feel like studying extensively

I really enjoyed listening to your advice. It will be very useful thanks. The bit about not studying when you don't feel like it is spot on. I'm taking a few days off and will go back to learning when I'm ready. I'm glad you confirmed what I was thinking 🤔

This is great advice, thank you! I've been scheduling one hour of reading on DuChinese every morning. When it comes to listening, I have a lot of trouble finding content at the right level where it's understandable and still challenging, I used to listen to HSK audio but got bored with it... need to find something. Usually I do chores with fantasy audiobooks in German, I kid myself thinking "I'm still learning stuff!" but they are easy, it just allows me not to lose my German. I also print out stuff to read in Chinese before bed, but more often than not will read sth in English instead, or nothing at all! it's a lot of mental strain. Cl: need to find new content outside of DuChinese stuff and studying characters...

All good advice. I'm doing much the same thing: shadowing or drilling practice when i'm wasting time on the internet, or doing housework, or some other physical task to keep my hands busy. If it's focused work that requires thought - like thinking up mnemonics for new words, or reading - I'll do that on the balcony where there are no screens. If I just can't be bothered to do anything I'll watch a movie in that language. Thanks.

I'm learning Russian and especially in the beginning I could take just a certain amount of Russian in, but still had time to learn and so I started dabbling with Dutch. For a German speaking English it's quite easy to understand, so I started listening to podcasts in Dutch at a time my Russian wasn't good enough for reading or listening. I sticked to Dutch, but it's not a priority. Anyway, if I'm tired and can't focus on Russian, I get back to Dutch. It also shows me that my way of learning works.

Regarding the place where you sit and learn I am of a different opinion. I noticed that it is much easier to learn new words or even grammar in different locations, as I associate the environment I was in with that new content. It gives the new word a different context, thus making it stick out of the pool of other words, especially if you are visual type of person.

Usually it is Portuguese (the language I'm learning) I'll have Brazilian streamers playing games in the background on very low in the background and I find this doesn't really distract me too much. Really it helps because when I'm tired of reading and Lingqing I'll take a quick sec or min to watch

Each case is individual, but from my perspective it's far more important to understand the language than to speak it, at least when it comes to my profession. I have no use of speaking if I can't understand the other person. If I can understand the person, I will find a way to express myself. Therefore I don't bother too much with trying to speak, there will be time for it once I move to the country.

Why is that? you've already learned a language. So just do it, don't try to study at first then, try to watch your fav movies and series in the targeted language for a few months ( i would say for 1 month or 2) Then try to learn more vocabulary, the words most likely become way too easier to use or memorize

I am not buying this. The average NATIVE speaker only knows 25,000 words and he is saying he just up and went from 8000 to 35,000 words in Turkish before his trip? LOL....okay buddy. I guess you are all set for Turkish Scrabble. I find learning 100 new words a month plenty because I want to really understand the usage, spelling and proper native pronunciation.

Lingq counts each word form as a seperate word. In Spanish for example: dar, darse, dio, diésemos, demoselas would all be consisidered seperate words. Given that Turkish is agglutinative and you can write monsters like: Avrupalılaştıramadıklar, Avrupalılaştıramadıklarımız, and Avrupalılaştıramadıklarımızdan (all seperate words), it's not unreasonable.

Not saying LingQ is bad......just pointing out no one is doing that level of language acquisition in that time.
