Spot on. The difference in being an okay band and a fucking great band. Have a plan. Have a set list. The last really good band I was in we spent the first hour or so playing our current gig set list and then the last 1 to 2 hours practicing new material or working out the bugs of our current tunes.

I’ve got my first gig (going solo) in a few weeks and I’ve watched this vid (and a few others of yours) everyday for the past two weeks and it’s MASSIVELY helpful. Thank you for all you do Damien!

1. Whats the goal? Whats the target? 2. Plan ur rehearsals 3. Be on time, ALWAYS! 4. Stop practicing mistakes, it's about perfecting 5. Use a metronome, get tight. 6. Rehearsal leader. Not have to be a same person every week 7. Keep the volume quiet 8. Record rehearsals 9. Take notes 10. Rehearse a gig (full setlist)

Hi Damian could you do a video an writing songs? That’d be awesome
@matusgensky37645 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the video. I am not sure if I completely agree with the last point, Rehearse like a gig. I think it depends on the goal of the rehearsal. If it is for an upcoming gig, then of course, jump around and practise the show, but if a band is practising a new song, then jumping around does not help the band focus on the song and all the details. However, I cannot wait to start practising and implementing your ideas to the creative process of my band. Thank you so much, Damo, you are a great inspiration!

These are great tips. Nothing kills a band faster than a group of people sitting around, noodling aimlessly. (Well, maybe hard drugs, but I've never been famous enough to find out).

Stoping the and and look for mistakes and errors is THE BEST FKN THING you can do as a band that gigs around.

Sucks when a band member posts the sucky rehearsal as a proper performance on social media smh

Sounds like they want you to see your mistakes, Maybe it's all they have for recording purposes, Sometime I have someone post stuff in series to show improvements as we went on. Its probably easier to post on SM so everyone can see at the same time without having to send files everywhere. Best case just ask
@katieh79274 жыл бұрын
@@JennyX69 hard thing is even if that was their intention, people will hear that and assume that's how the band sounds at their best because normally people post their best on social media even if theyre actually a lot better or improving

We play with a Click, both on Reharsal and Live. My bandmates where not very happy about that, but I persisted and now, we sound very very solid and integrated. What is your perspective on Click for Live situations?
@robbievalentine82395 жыл бұрын
Unless you're playing to backing tracks (which I'm not a fan of) I don't think you should be using a click live. Rehearse enough that you've fee the tempo of the song. You shouldn't need a click.

Ahem: "someone in the" band - you know who you are! Also, excellent advise on stopping the song as soon as a mistake happens. Small loops are much, much more helpful.

Dear Damian, after really few rehearsals as MD I am still not sure about following point in the preparation of rehearsals / pratice. How do you communicate your musical concept (per song) to your musicians (what do you write on the drummers sheet, on the rythm guitar sheet, on the keys sheet etc)? In consideration of musicians who dont really "read music"...

How do you record rehersal with something better than a celphone but not expensive?
@DamianKeyes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alvaro, Phones are getting better with recordings as the compressor is being developed but if you want something a little better you could invest in a Zoom mic recorder or even a decent compressor mic for an iphone. I wouldn't shell out too much money but it's always good to record yourself to learn where you can improve.

Well meaning video but practice like it’s a gig but stop when you make a mistake. can’t do that at a gig. metronomes Work that out at home where you prepare for rehearsal everybody has smart phone text the songs you want to do to each other then prepare for rehearsal. come to rehearsal knowing the song having worked it out at the right tempo at home one more record every rehearsal and make the guy that didn’t prepare listen to it for homework. To me time together is precious it should be spent getting closer to the groove no being technically proficient robots. the thing I got out of this is goals better have those! have fun experiment
@DamianKeyes5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, Yeah very good point, I'm an advocate of planning different rehearsals for different goals. For me getting the band tight is different to a show rehearsal which is different from a creative writing rehearsal. I don't like to see bands going into rehearsals with no plan of the outcome of the session Thanks dude! 🙂

Really great video but consider not swearing. I would love to use it in music classroom lessons but the language prevents it. Lots more potential subscribers in the student community.
