1. "Commenting on her anatomy is not a means of building confidence." It is if her anatomy is her virtue. 2. "It's a demeaning way of sexualizing the female body" No, it's not. You only see it that way because you're jealous. And yea, check out the internet, magazine covers, ads etc. Sexualizing all over the place. Even by females themselves. And you say it like it's a bad thing. 3. "and that we do not need" Who gives a shit what you need? You aren't a feminist by chance, aren't you? 4. "A woman should not be reduced to her anatomy." She is not "reduced to her anatomy". We agree she is smart too but she can't emphasize "smart" with a cleavage. Stop hating. She is a nice female.

Glad that you suggested playing video games!! It worked for me and should work for others. The first game I played through in German was Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Second was DMC: Devil May Cry. These are great first games because as long as you've played video games before, they don't require mastery of the language to be able to play them through. After you're better with the language, move on to dialogue-heavy rpgs like The Witcher 3, Mass Effect, and Alpha Protocol. Knowing the language is much more important in these as choosing dialog options is an important part of the game and the combat is much more nuanced than SoM and DMC.

Great ideas, Trix! My favorite is just actively listening to native speakers converse. I'm almost at the point with Espanol that I can grasp the jist of a dialogue, with flashes of comprehension. The jigsaw puzzle is gradually getting filled in, but most of the time it's more like trying to read something in your own language but a little faster than your brain can put it together, you know what you're "reading" is intelligible, important and interesting, you just can't quite follow it. It's the lazy - language - learners way and I love it!

+TheMusiclover500 Thank you! :) I'll try to remember that from now on!
@TheMusiclover5008 жыл бұрын
***** I should have specified I didn't mean it was technically incorrect, it just struck me as an oddity. I almost always hear legible in the English I speak, although to be fair my variant is pretty posh and retains a few archaic anomalies that other dialects may have simplified. I was just like a fun vocab suggestion, I'm learning Dutch (Nederlands not like Deutsch) now and as the famously blunt people they are they often recommend more advance grammar which I find fun :D
@TheMusiclover5008 жыл бұрын
***** Aye it certainly isn't an unwarranted reputation. Although the Foreign Service Institute classifies Dutch/Afrikaans as category 1 languages and German as Category 2, so science would tell us German grammar is harder than Dutch. (From an English standpoint). It's pretty interesting to see the transition in the three though, I started studying like super basic German for a trip I'll soon be taking to Austria (although the dialect will probably make such an endeavor null regardless) and things like the German "Junge" Dutch "jongen" & English "Young" place it in the clear middle ground with dialects as well and nonsense grammar rules, just much less French than English. Although I'd say the Dutch accent is much harsher, I've already decided to learn the specific Rotterdam/South Holland/ sounding accent because I'm way to Anglo to roll an R
@prinzwilbert28598 жыл бұрын
+TheMusiclover500 sorry, I did not get the difference between "readable" and"legible". Can you explain? Looking up in the dictionary both are translated to the same German words.
@prinzwilbert28598 жыл бұрын
+DatMass019 thanks. I guess, this difference doesn't exist in German, where both would be translated as "lesbar" (literally: read-able). I guess, now I understand "readable" has a tendency to reasonable and understandable while "legible" has a hint of decipherable.

For those of you who go to church, recommend getting a bible in the target language and going over the scripture--either beforehand or during the sermon. An electronic version is preferred for this particular maneuver, because of its portability and its capability to switch back to an English version of what you're reading. An additional plus is the capability to bookmark the passage for a quick review of what you've studied.
@Iman-Global8 жыл бұрын
This might be true for some languages but specifically for German, it is not true. I know it very well because I learned German as a second language. For German language, the first step after learning to say "hi" and "how are you?" and some basic words is learning the Dative-Accusative-Nominative Grammatical table!! There is no way that you can escape from it! If you watch German movies and interviews even 24 hours a day, you will still not be able to talk this language correctly, if German is not your mother tongue. So do not fool yourself. You have to sit down and memorize this table. Not a rocket science, but you have to memorize this table like the multiplication table that you memorized at some point of your life. Here is an example: Even if you want to say a simple sentence like "I go to school" in German, 1) you need to know how to conjugate the word "go" in German for "I" since the verb changes based on the subject 2) you need to know whether "school" in German is feminine, masculine or natural 3) You need to know whether you are "at school "or "moving toward school"- yes, it changes for how you add endings" 4) You need to know what preposition you must use for going toward school 5) you need to know whether you would need to use an article or not 6) you need to conjugate the word "go" (gehen), and add the right article format based on the School gender and based on your movement toward it. The only way that you know how to change the article format for feminine, accusative (since you are moving toward it) is sitting down and memorizing that GRAMMATICAL TABLE. Point. Sorry, for bad news!
@Dualgas7 жыл бұрын
Iman Actually, both "zu" and "nach" always take the dative, even though they always involve movement. So it would be "Ich gehe zu der Schule". The "movement=accusative, none=dative" only applies to a few prepositions, like in, an, vor, and unter. And even then, what counts as movement isn't so black and white. For example "Sie laufen in dem Schatten" = They run in the shade, but "Sie laufen in den Schatten" = They run into the shade (from somewhere else)

Playing video games in a foreign language is one of the best and most challenging strategies you can use for improving your language. I've played A Link Between Worlds, Hollow Knight, and Mario Odyssey all in Spanish. It was great, it taught me a lot of nouns and REALLY taught me a lot of colloquialisms. Different from movies or books, you usually can't rewind what a character in a game has said. In addition to that, if you don't understand what someone has told you to do, you literally cannot progress and...play the game. So you have no choice but to buckle down and figure out, every time!

I like doing some combination of 8 and 9. I'll be there at work making myself count in Danish or Latin whenever I need to count something. As I gain more fluency/confidence I will definitely be planning aloud that way as well. I also like to speak to family, even though they have no clue what I'm saying, I've drawn some inspiration from Italians who gesture a lot because of the historic diversity of languages and dialects in their area so I decided to take up something similar. Vlogs or podcasts are always awesome to listen/watch though I like to keep it all natural picking up what I pick up and focus on the words, pitch, context and other niceties knowing that most of the time I might not even be able to pick up enough to understand the thoughts that are being conveyed (though I did watch a vlog from a Danish woman that just moved and was surprised with how much I did know). Latin is a little more difficult as far as a diverse source of audio goes but it isn't too bad. I mainly do it just for the fun and enlightenment anyway.

I am learning Russian currently... So what is useful: An app for the cell phone. This helps learning vocabulary and some phrases and spelling and adds some gamification to it. Books are good, as soon as they don't create too much frustration. Then there are groups of people who meet to learn languages. So for example we meet every week and speak English in the first hour and Russian in the second hour. Can be a little bit hard, if too many good speaker show up and just leave the beginners behind, but it the end it works in the long term... And then, I do have a book for learners... And another one with the grammar. You can read any amount of text for free in Wikipedia.. And find the article in other languages as well... KZbin is good as well. There are excellent youtube films teaching the more common languages, at least from English, but there are also youtube films in Russian for native speakers, often with subtitles for non-speakers. And I do recommend seeng a teacher at least once in a while, to make sure that mistakes are discovered and corrected, which can otherwise remain undetected and persist for a long time. And to have someone to ask questions. On the other hand, a course can be nice to meet other people, but that one is possible with the group where we speak two langauges in two hourse anyway, so no need for that.... The cards for learning the vocabulary can also be bought, at least for more common language combinations. An interesting question arises here: When I learn langauge X and already know language A, B, C, D and E, from which of the five should I learn X? Usually the availability of material, teachers, groups etc. kind of narrows that down. But I would find it more interesting ot learn X from a language, that I know fairly well, but have some interest in keeping at that level... I liked the one with the cow. Actually, when talking about indo-european languages like English, German, Spanish, Russian, Greek etc. there are so many similarities, some more obvious, some more subtle, and some even scientifically wrong, but anyway useful. This is true for the words as well as for the conjugation and declination. And also it is an advantage that the alphabets are so similar, at least work in a similar way. Ok, when learning German or French or Spanish from English (or from one of the three) it is even easier, because we just have to add a couple of letters or morphed letters to the alphabet and the morphed letters are somewhat related to the unmorphed letter.

Few people know about a pragmatic, efficient way to learn a new language. Those who do, advance in learning steadily and according to their schedule. While most people find themselves learning a new language as a necessity, many others do it because it is fun. It feels more sophisticated to know more than one language. It can be highly beneficial in your life over the long run. However, it is not an easy task to learn a new language no matter whether it is for fun or out of necessity. You've probably seen friends or acquaintances talk about wanting to learn a foreign language, then enthusiastically purchasing products, books, and maybe even enrolling into a course or program, only to ultimately see the reality of the fact that they have failed in their pursuit of learning another language. According to The Guardian, the ICM survey, which questioned 1,001 young people aged 14-24 from across the UK in June this year, paints a picture of a generation perhaps surprisingly open to the prospect of language learning, but often deeply lacking in the confidence of their ability to put their language studies into practice. Three in ten who chose not to study a language at GCSE or A-level say language learning is challenging, with almost half of all those questioned regarding grammar as difficult to learn and 40% seeing memorizing vocabulary as hard work. The research had indicated that A-level languages are perceived as being harder than other subjects and their content is demotivating. Sitting down with a language textbook and trying to teach yourself a new language is not only boring, it takes an inordinate amount of time. It can take months to capture the basics of a particular language. Fluency comes far later. Often, we don’t have the luxury of spending months learning a language. For example, those people who are migrating or taking up a job abroad. However as an individual learner or with a tutor, the student can cut down the time it takes him/her to master the basics of a new language. There are methods that can be used to reduce the time it takes. Main Essentials of Learning a New Language - They distinguish three main essentials associated with learning a new language; namely the vocabulary, basic sentence elements / patterns, and grammar rules. Vocabulary - the most basic step towards learning a new language is to learn its words. Familiarity with the words will lead you to form sentences. Sentence Patterns and Elements - this has to do with how you ask and answer questions. Making coherent sentences is the way to make someone understand what you are saying. The ability will also help you understand what others are saying and how you might respond. Grammar Rules - Each language has certain rules that need to be followed. There is a special type of media developed for the first and second component - a bilingual graded book. Bilingual graded books are also called bilingual graded readers. They offer a parallel translation that allows the user to learn a new language in less time. With the translation on the same page, learners can effortlessly learn what any unfamiliar words mean. They can quickly pick up new vocabulary and phrases that are used over and over in texts of bilingual graded books. When they read a graded bilingual reader, they can pick up chunks of language and vocabulary that they can use in conversation and other real-world applications. It also significantly reduces the amount of time it takes to become conversational in a new language. As you read a bilingual reader, your brain begins to remember words and phrases simply because you are exposed to them several times. You don’t even realize, until you have to recall what you’ve learned, that you have already learned the new words and phrases. Listen to the audio tracks that should always accompany a bilingual graded book to learn how words are said and to improve your overall ability to speak the new language. A good idea is to use the free VLC media player to control the playing speed. You can control the playing speed by decreasing or increasing the speed value on the button of the VLC media player's interface. Decide what is better for you a paper book or an e-book. Many of the e-readers by Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo have dictionaries pre-loaded on their devices, with options to download additional ones, for free. If you do not have an e-reader, you do not have to buy one, because you can download it as a free app to your phone and use it right away. Writing your own notes, searching or making highlights is ridiculously simple with an e-reader or e-reading app. Anything you do with an e-book is also synced to the cloud, ensuring any change will follow you, no matter what device you are on. At first search on Google for "bilingual graded books" or "bilingual graded books for beginners". Choose and buy a book on a suitable topic, for example general, business, medical, culinary, dialogues, students, cooking, family, tourists, detective, short story or whatever you like. Read it for about twenty minutes a day. If you do it every day, you will be surprised how much you can learn in a month's time. Try to use the target language after you have learned for a month. If you don't have an opportunity to talk to native speakers at home or at work/study, use your target language in small talk on Skype or another online chat. Search on Google for "free online clean chat rooms" and pick up the one that suits your interests. Two or three minutes of small talk two or three times a week or more often will give you some motivation and encourage you to learn new questions and answers for new dialogues. Compile a list of questions and answers for your dialogues in a target language or find them on Google with keywords "Bilingual graded books dialogues" and try using them. Don't be afraid of making errors. They are your steps to success. You will spot and correct them sooner or later anyway. They will not be for the rest of your life. Better not to talk at all than to talk incorrectly? Wrong! Start talking as much as you can! Your language will improve every time you talk. A learner who knows only a hundred words and isn't shy of talking will progress more quickly than the one who knows a thousand words but remains silent because he or she is afraid of saying something wrong. It can usually take you from one to three months to finish a bilingual graded reader at beginner level (A1) and elementary level (A2). The amount of time depends on your previous experience with learning foreign languages and on your personal abilities. At this point you should be able to ask and answer simple questions with the following questioning words: What? Who? Where? When? Which? How many/much? As you improve and become more confident in your ability to use the new language, you can move on to the next reader level and continue your language-learning journey. After using a bilingual graded book for a week or two you are ready to study grammar rules, so buy a good grammar book. A grammar book will satisfy your curiosity about grammar rules awakened by the bilingual graded book. Read the grammar book to find out how you can use your target language more precisely. Follow this order - first read a reading book, then use a grammar book and exercises to make your learning experience uninterrupted. Language text with a parallel translation has helped many to uncover their potential for learning multiple languages. Whether you are learning a language as a hobby or for a necessary purpose, you will find such books are supportive. Using them is by far more pragmatic, efficient way to learn a new language than a "learn a language in two weeks" program. However you should frequently use the target language by using bilingual graded books with audio tracks, grammar books, chats, internet pages and even songs to maintain your motivation and progress. Remember - twenty minutes a day does the magic!

Watching a movie in a new language with or without subtitles is completely useless you're in an advanced level of the language, it won't work unless you certainly understand the basics.

I disagree. Simply getting used to the melody and rhythm of a foreign language will help you even if you can't follow the plot of the movie. And your subconscience processes way more than you think. :)

I've been learning German for the past few years and I really like your idea of game-ifying language study. One of my favorite methods is to look up something interesting on Google (after setting it to include German results). Something like ,,wilden Tiere der Afrika" or ,,Warum ist der Himmel blau" and read through it clicking on words I don't know or that I'm not sure I know so that Google translate tells me what they mean. It took me a few grammar lessons to do this in German, but it might be a bit easier in a less inflected language, especially common romance languages.

Who's watching this in 2018? 😂 You're so funny! And I'm really into your editing (except that not every sentence needs a cut after it- it feels like you're jumping) but this rabbit stuff is super cute 😮 but unfortunately I neither speak German nor want to learn it at the moment... I'm fluent in English and I learn French at school (I like it but I must practice a lot more by myself 'cause at school we just don't improve) and I started to learn Spanish a few months ago. I learn it totally alone- no teacher, no student book, I borrowed a fewc Spanish books to see which one is worth buying it. However I've improved more in 2 months in Spanish than in 2 years of learning French xd. For French I only learn as it's required: do homework in the student book and listen to the attached CD... and rarely watch Frenh videos but just because I found a great yt channel (DamonandJoe *-*) But for Spanish... I have a notebook that I use and carry all the time. I write into it everything; stories and thoughts, but lessons like vocabulary and grammar too. All the conjugations are separated (one page for the endings and the explanation of that tense) and one page for practice (mostly I write twelve verbs and conjugate them) however I separate the 'ar' 'er' and 'ir' endings as their conjugation might be a little different. So that notebook is super useful and keeps me on track. And I listen to Spanish music too. A lot. Alvaro Soler songs and Kevin&Karla covers which means they translate popular songs into Spanish. And I'm fond of writing unknow words on stickers and I stick them everywhere I can. And Pinterest is a very close friend of mine- so many quotes and idioms can be found there and I have special boards where I collect them and then I check it out regularly and write some of them into my notebook. And youtube is my other half. I love youtube sooo much. It helped me the most to become fluent in English and improve my listening skill. And the same goes with Spanish. There're many Spanish teaching channels for instance 'dreaming spanish'. And back to French I'd like to recommend musicians like stromae and sidoine... Sorry for the long comment but I don't have anyone to discuss my language learning enthusiasm and habits so now I wanted to write it out. I hope it's useful for someone and have a nice day

Hi, if you like music in Spanish, maybe you´d like to listen to some of these songs.Most of them are classic hits from different genres, but, for your learning purpose, they might be useful.I hope you find it interesting and useful as well.Sorry, but I haven't made it into a palylist yet, so you'll have to copy and paste the songs into youtube's search bar to find them.Spotify might be a better option though, for better sound quality. I'm learning Norwegian, this by far is probs the best advice video for learning a language, especially reading children books, writing small postcards, talking to yourself, etc. Also listening to podcasts, interviews, and watching movies A good idea is to talk to a native of the language you're learning through the internet And your last advice "Don't feel stupid" is a very important advice, you might feel stupid reading a children's book or watching a cartoon, but you're learning a language, that's pretty damn cool, so keep it up. Also tricksy your accent is so cute ;-;

When I started learning German I changed my cellphone to German and OH BOI THAT WAS SCARY but I managed to get used to it I became familiar with words like "abbrechen" (cancel) abbonieren (subscribe) and "Benachrichtigung" (notifications), "rufe" (call) "zurück" (back) "gefällt mir" (i liked) and so on. Though technical vocabulary won't help em in daily life conversation I still think it might come in handy And it did I helped a classmate who was visiting a Swiss airlines website and everything was in German and everything felt so familiar to me. I only told him the translations of Flugzeug zurück Uhr and basic terms. So anyway I recommend to switch your phone to that language but not as a fresh beginner. Specially not if that language is written in different symbols from your own like Chinese, Arabic,hindi etc unless you are an expert
