Ground soil sets up like concrete. Uhg! Water runs through channels and the plants seem to get little water. Sparse, weak leaves, almost skeletal and dingy flowers. I've learned my lesson.

I’d definitely watch that one! I think with everyone doing more gardening now due to the public health issues we’ve been having, it’s been hard to find potting soil! I started out the season with my favorite kind, but now some stores are out of potting soil and I just have to get what’s left anywhere I can get it.

@@annemelon5283 How do you know Kimberly Barker did not start her plants from seed? Exactly! You do not know! Her comment was pertaining to budworms eating her plants and what to do about it. It had absolutely nothing to do with how the plants actually got their start, or whom started them! Even though this specific video that teaches about watering and has nothing to do with teaching you how to start a plant from seed, Kimberly could have already shown him how to start plants from seed, you don't know! If she hasn't, Laura has a great video on this very channel that teaches you how to start from seed!! I am sure there is more than one!!! Her comment is not weird at all!!! In fact it is your comment that has an issue!!! No it is not weird, it just shows how you are a straight forward SMARTASS!!!!!!! You do NOT have a clue how educated Kimberly is on gardening. If she isn't well educated, as I am not, she too can learn so much as I do from the great video content that Laura on thus channel "Garden Answers" puts out daily!!!! Laura is highly educated in gardening!! If you don't believe that either then maybe you should watch another channel or just teach yourself, considering you are such the genius at gardening!!!!!!!!

Anne Melon, Laura worked in her parents’ garden center for many years. I would say she is quite educated in horticulture. Working there was much better than any “formal” education. I’m not sure what your problem is with Laura other than she’s successful, but I would suggest you don’t watch her channel or read the comments of those of us who do.

I made the mistake of buying a 6 cell pack of lobelia over a Proven winners plant this summer, for my containers to save some money. I occasionally will buy a 6 pack & bump them up to quarts to get more roots before I plant them. Only if what I want isn't available in a larger size. Usually, only the cheapest plants are grown in 6 packs as the "plugs" (tiny plants provided to growers) can have a large price difference.

Lobelia isn't a sun lover. It tends to like the cooler weather. Watering is tricky with them too. I buy them often but this might be my last year. Or I'll put them in more shade. They're so pretty tho so hard to pass up. And I deadhead them by running my fingers through them. And they'll re bloom. But generally by mid Aug. they're toast.

How does it look now and will you move Benjamin or move the little baby things? • Have you already recieved baby stuff from followers and do you still have loads of things from the last time? • What do you think the gender will be? If it's a gril do you want to deck her out in pink or rather universal colours? • Would you consider doing updates on your belly? I love seeing those, seeing a baby grow sped up😬 All the love for you four humans and the kitties and chickens❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Unfortunately, 3 out of my 4 concrete containers (that I've had for 20 years!!! How did the ancient civilizations manage to make their last from then til now-and going & going....?!?!) decided they were done & pretty much crumbled to smithereens! A friend gave me a couple of faux whiskey barrels that I still haven't planted anything still but hoping to still make it in time for a lush end-of-fall showing. You inspire me all the time. When I have an ugh-too-hot-outside moment, I watch one of your videos & it kicks me into gear. :) So, thank you from the bottom of my heart to the tips of my grubby fingers.

Amen to the $3 compared to the $5. I tried the wave petunias in the front of my house and it has been trying. I will definitely spend the extra 💰 for Proven winners. I did some PW petunias in back of my house and it was worth it for sure. I was just trying it out in front to see if petunias would do well since my front yard only gets a couple hours of sun. Trial complete, plenty of sun and come on PW petunias next year! Something to look forward to - planning started. 😊 And change to concrete or aqua pots 😉. Love the color explosion.

Most of the time I cant afford the good potting soil, and i really cant afford concrete pieces, BUT when i can afford the good potting soil, i can really see a difference. I planted 2 dahlia tubers, bought the same place, same variety, same pot, same everything, except i ran out of the good soil so in 1 i used the cheap stuff, and the difference is insane. Much faster, bigger and healthier growth on the good one. I always felt stupid paying a lot of money for dirt, but i really always buy the good stuff when i can.
@soysan34
@soysan34 4 жыл бұрын
Think of in a different prospective, one is garden soil (dirt) and other is potting mix (soil), once I started to think of it like that it was easier to justify it since the are 2 completely different things. I buy them in 4-1 ratio and mix. Since I am not always available for consistent watering. So buying in that rationale I am ( in my mind, at least) buying the "moisture control" soil at a lower cost. The 4-1 mix I make depends also what container or plants I use. I have seen a huge difference not only in cost but how often I need to water. Next yr I plan to make my own to get cost down further, since I am a "frost watcher"!! Big box stores such as Lowes in my zone 5 get a huge amounts of plants in way too early, so they haven't the space to keep them protected and they get hit by frost! So it's time for me to adjust my schedule and squeeze in a trip to store every 2 -3 days as they put the damaged plants on clearance rack, yippie :-) !!! I literally save hundreds and hundreds not only on annuals, but like at this time of summer (mid-July) they are pushing perennials out on to clearance racks! So all the money I save on my clearance plants is also allowing me to justify spending a few extra bucks on good potting mix. Another way to save, is save last year's soil and fill the bottoms of this yrs pots, along with whatever you have handy like cut up pool noodles, empty crushed up pots (and inverted pots) the plant comes in, or vary large cleaned rocks. That empty space at bottom of larger containers are now filled with something much cheaper, hope that helps! Oh one other thing is save on pots! I buy my pots at garage/estate sales, also I pick them up roadside during village clean up days, WOW the money I save there is extraordinary!!! The only investment I have there is soap, water, disinfectant! Pots are crazy expensive, they make potting soil look cheap! I know they all might not match, but some light sanding and some primer (dont skip this part!) and your color choices of spray paint and like magic, they all match! Just dont hit the spray painted surface with strong water spray (it will chip if you do, trust me I know :-○)

You are simply amazing! I have a learnt so much from watching your videos and you have been such an inspiration during this COVID-19 lock-down. We have been updating our backyard and thanks to you, our yard is coming along beautifully! Love your personality and "realness". All the best to you and your family and congratulations on your 2nd pregnancy.

I used to buy the cheap packs of petunias and hated having to deadhead them all the time. I was so happy when I found your channel and started using the Proven Winners petunias. No more deadheading and they grow so big and lush. I only wish our big box stores sold more Proven Winners plants in MN. Thank you for all you do Laura.
