Hayir is interesting. It's a loan word from Arabic (خير/good) through Persian into Turkish. A Persian would think "No" is rude, so "خير/good" was a polite way of saying no. Southern American English has a similarly indirect expression, "bless her/his heart". This is NOT a compliment. It is a polite way of saying something critical about a person. For example, "She means well, bless her heart," and "He tried to cook dinner, but he should stay out of the kitchen, bless his heart."

Great episode! In English we distinguish between homophones, words which sound alike but have different meanings & spellings, like they're/there/their, new/knew/gnu, meat/meet, or eight/ate, but if the spelling is the same they're called homonyms, like tree bark and dog bark, or a ball used for games and a ball for dancing. Anyone have any recommendations for resources for learning Turkish homonyms? The vocabulary decks in Memrise's many Turkish courses have been useful, that's where I learned yüz as 100, face and taraf as side, hand, party, but this was my first introduction to multiple meanings of ocak and eş, both of which are included in multiple courses.

I think the best way to learn homophones is to watch Turkish series and movies. You can see how it's used in sentences in daily life. Because pronouncation and writing are same for homophones. The meaning is differently

But the example with Hayır is that one word is “hâyır” like no which is actually spoken with longer and pronounced, while hayır like in hayırlı sabahlar actually isnt the same word, and comes from صباح الخير which means like blassed Morning. So ist Not Theo Same Word, and you can differentiate them by the correct pronounciation.

aslında "hayır" kelimeleri tam olarak sesteş değil. "olumsuzluk" anlamındaki "hayır" ile "fayda, iyilik" anlamındaki "hayır" arasında vurgu farkı var. ilkinde vurgu ilk hecedeyken (ha'yır) ikincisinde son hecede (hayır') 🙂

Well, to me, "hayır" is an odd word for me that means "No" but is used as a blessing as adjective like "hayırlı gün" I was surprised in the beginning when I saw that the city hung lots of banners with the "hayır" words greeting citizens😆 At first I thought they were saying something negative.
