When we hear about fighters asking for more money outside their contract it's because agreeing to a 4+ fight contract is the safety net if they lose a few. It also pigeonholeds them into a locked price if they win 2 or 3 in a row or get lucky with the media like masvidal.

After the purchase of Pride, the UFC offered to buy him out of his contract, which he refused and after losing a few fights he came back to almost win the title against Werdum.
