I don’t think the Hawaiian pronunciation is “yookuhlaylee” or “ookuhlaylee”. I believe it’s oo-koo-lay-lay.

There is no word yukaleilei in the Hawaiian language, but there is a word 'ukulele is a Hawaiian word, 'uku means small bug, louse or flea and lele is to jump so 'ukulele does mean jumping fleas. So pronouncing yukaleilei is disrespectful to the Hawaiian people and culture just to let you know. And although the 'ukulele may have gone down in popularity outside Hawai'i but not here in the islands. So as a teacher, you should use the Hawaiian pronunciation because is you ask teachers and educators here in Hawai'i we would appreciate and prefer it. Just thought that you should know. Mahalo! 😊

Hi, I have asked teachers and educators from Hawaii and what I said in the video is what I’ve been told with the emphasis that if you are in Hawaii you should use the Hawaiian pronunciation. I have also read a lot about the topic and the same is true. There is no prevailing opinion. There is never going to be a 100% agreed upon term as no single person can speak for the group as a whole. I’m sorry if my pronunciation offends you personally. That is not my intention. However, you are more than welcome to not watch my videos if it does bother you enough. I use both pronunciations but tend to use the Americanized form more to appeal to a wider audience. I teach my students both, but I also do not claim to be a keeper of all the knowledge. As this is the second post you have made about this topic, I see you and hear you, and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Mispronouncing a foreign word is just poor language use. In English you are supposed to pronounce a foreign word the way the foreigner would, or at least make an effort. But claiming that mispronouncing ukulele is disrespectful to the Hawaiian people and culture is just silly nonsense. It isn't. Most people have no idea that "yukaleilei" isn't the correct pronunciation. Thanks for pointing out the correct pronunciation though.

You are not the keeper and guardian of all Hawaiian culture. This kind of mindset is corrosive to all of us and locks all of us up in some kind of stressful community anxiety. The instructor has obviously gone above and beyond to research the correct and most widely accepted and respected ways to pronounce this word. All that to say, we will not be dragged into your narrow minded culture prison.

Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooo. You made a big mistake. On Baritone or Low G tenor the wound strings are metal windings over a nylon core, just like a classical guitar. They are not metal windings over a metal core like acoustic guitar. Acoustic guitar strings have way more tension than classical guitar strings and will damage a ukulele as they aren't designed for them.
