@@theflyingfool yes indeed My grandfather who was a metallurgist and mechanical engineer taught me how to use both a circular and linear slide rule while I was in primary school, and he used to test me occasionally... He himself I feel was probably a polymath he was multilingual 6 different languages and could do complex maths in his head to 6 decimal places...He taught I was the dumbest one in the family...even though I had a degree in mining engineering....

I sat in a cockpit of a Finnish air force Draken in the 90’s and that thing was tiny! The thrust-lever was completely to the left of the left side of the canopy, so that you had to snake your arm under some metal. I wouldn’t want to try leave that spot in a hurry.

@@daz804 Neither of those aircraft have turbo props. The B-17 has 4 radial engines and the Lanc has 4 V-12s. A turbo prop is a turbine (essentially a jet engine) that's used to power a propeller.

I've seen most of these aircraft displaying or otherwise passing by. The most memorable for me were the Lancaster and the BBMF overlying my parents home one Sunday afternoon. A Canberra displaying on the coast. It kept overflying the headland we were sitting on and the noises it made were amazing. And finally the Red Arrows on the same headland. They were using it for cover, along with the low cloud base, to 'sneak up' on the spectators. Was amazing.

Are you kidding..? Rare footage from a Draken..? the Saab was about 30 Years part of the Austrian Air Force and flew many many Displays live on TV at the Air Show Called "Air Power" at the Zeltweg Airbase. It's a Big International Airshow and it is live in TV in half of Europe and also in UK.

The only other flying Lancaster is based in Hamilton Ontario and flies over my house pretty regularly. They actually took her to England a number of years ago so the two could fly together - there's some good videos of it here on KZbin.

Quite a few years ago at Edwards AFB there was a flyby of a B-52, FB-111, and a B-1. Then the B-1 came by low and slow, setting off car alarms. Then after everyone reset their alarms, I came back for another pass, setting off alarms again. Dad once said the loudest noise he ever heard were two B-52s taking off along with a KC-135 tanker plane with water injection.

Some great footage there - some from Fairford if I’m not mistaken? Seeing those Lancasters and B-17 always makes me wonder and lament the fact that, even though they were so vital and iconic a relatively short time ago, they and so many others have been left to rot away and disappear until only one or two airworthy examples remain. If we could turn back time, would we not want to preserve them by the dozen?

Has anyone explained to C-17 pilots that, when doing a touch and go, you are supposed to have the "weight on wheels" light go on before throttling up and climbing out? Lancaster - You're supposed to drop the Upkeep cookie from 60 feet!! Canberra - PR9? I mean I can see the "fighter" canopy.

We don’t need a C-17 “weight on wheels landing light.” Our spoilers dearm on TnG’s when the flaps are retracted to 1/2, throttles are past 65 degrees, and TOGA engages. Either one takes care of the spoilers to disarm for the takeoff
