Someone didn't play Baldurs Gate 3 to act 3 and Mayrina is leading a secret society of hag hunters and a great ally with interesting character development
@thedarkstarr119 ай бұрын
From the looks of it, seems the writer just glanced over a couple of channels and didn't play most of the games to find out...OR, alternatively, they only made the worst choices and ended up with the consequences of their own actions. Mayrina is one of the better NPCs. Most of 'em, if you treat 'em right will help you at some point. I figured the druids would be higher up than anyone. Half of 'em would side with the Shadow Druids if given the opportunity. Like the elf inside the room with Kagha, or the gnome out near the statue. They practically spit on you everytime you talk to them.
@beoweasel9 ай бұрын
What's more obnoxious is that they seem to acknowledge that she has a frigging character arc in Act 3, but just blithely dismiss it as, "Well, you'll probably be too frustrated with the character to ever see that!!" Seriously? Not to mention that Mayrina's characterization is perfectly understandable if you *bother to pay attention rather than just skip all the dialogue*. She's a distraught, emotionally devastated woman struggling with the loss of her beloved husband and an uncertain future of raising their child alone, which she believes she's incapable of doing. Ethel preyed on Mayrina's vulnerability, offering to bring her husband back from the dead in exchange for her child, who she assured she would raise as her own and teach them the ways of magic (which, technically speaking yeah...that was Ethel's intention, though in true Hag fashion, it's laden with half-truths). To Mayrina, that seemed like a great deal. She gets her husband back AND her child gets a life that she would never be able to provide. And it's not like you can scoff at Mayrina being unable to see through the the hag's lies, because you can see numerous examples both in her lair and in the Druid's Grove that Ethel is very persuasive. Hell, there's that Gurr hunter hanging outside her Tea House preparing himself to make a deal with her and, unlike everybody else, he KNOWS exactly what she is. If you just rush into the swamp and confront Ethel without telling Mayrina that Ethel murdered her brothers (by speaking to their corpses) when they attempted to find and rescue her, then she only knows that you've blundered in to play hero and deprived her of the one chance to get her husband back and secure a better future for her unborn child. But if you DO tell her about her brothers, then she realizes that Ethel has been playing her for a fool and during the fight with Ethel, cheers you on to kill the Hag. She's thankful for your rescue, but devastated that she nearly gave her child to a monster...and then the knife is twisted even further when you seemingly provide her with the thing she had sacrificed so much and endured...only to find out that "hope" simply brings her husband back as a mindless, rotting undead. People REALLY sell Mayrina short because she's not weeping with joy for her rescuers. The quest rewards exploration and wants you to investigate the swamp and the brothers' fate. It also fits the overarching theme of BG3, that of crisis of faith and the lengths people will go to secure safety for themselves and alleviate that crisis.

Queen Anora from dragon age origins deserves worse for sure. So many people give her a free pass though… She played just as much of a role in ferelden’s civil unrest/war as her father. At least with Loghain he can be reform/shows remorse for his actions if you choose too. (However you have to betray Alistair!) But Anora retains that haughty holier than you attitude and pretty much throws you under the wagon at every opportunity. She was the Queen for makers sake but certainly didn’t act like one! A whole lot of telling rather than showing her competence. Which I still doubt heavily. I don’t trust her. Not to mention while Alistair will only jail her if he is king, Anora will straight up execute him if she remains in power. Really puts into perspective the kind of person Anora is. Her only saving grace is that she does truly care about her father but unfortunately this comes at the cost of her country and its people. Both father and daughter were willing to let the country fall to the blight and war. All to retain their own power. For their treason, Loghain gets put down and Anora is sent straight to the dungeons! I will die on this hill.

Delphine feels awful because Skyrim has a tremendous amount of cut content. They were almost done with the game, but had to cancel a bunch of features to make the 11-11-11 ship date set by marketing and management. This includes removing the active territory system, where the Imperials and Stormcloaks would dynamically fight each other to hold parts of the map, which is what those weird war maps with the pins on them were GOING to be used for. Originally, there was going to be an option to truly restore the Blades, there would have been more to do with Paarthunax, and you could have chosen to submit yourself as the High King of Skyrim at the Moot. All of this was removed, so Deplhine's story just ends abruptly.

Far Cry 2 was particularly bad about this. The game had a whole mechanic where you had “buddies”- usually two at a time. One would rescue you if you were injured too badly while the other would give you alternative ways to complete missions. That on its own got a bit frustrating since if you managed to NOT accidentally kill them they abruptly go “missing” for seemingly no reason. But what got particularly bad was the ending, where completely out of nowhere, every buddy you didn’t accidentally kill shows up and randomly decides to betray you for no reason. It seemed to completely undermine a mechanic that was supposedly crucial to the game and seemed completely out of character for several of them.

Then there was a nasty bug that when you do a new game when you have a finished save game, the buddy is still hostile to you from the end of the old save.

To be fair Myrene is only ungrateful if you don't pick the right options. When you encounter her brothers realier on, you HAVE to offer them your help to find her. They'll decline you no matter what you say, but if you offer to help, you will later encounter their corpses on the swamp. You can even use Speak with the Dead on them. If you find their corpses, you can tell Myrena that the hag killed them, causing her to call the deal off and **COMPLETELY** changing her demeanor towards you.

Saints Row The Third: Zimos. I loved 3 and 4, they were exactly the kind of silly and crazy I was hoping the reboot would be, but Zimos was really difficult to like. You put him in charge of the Saints' prostitution business, which makes him an icky character to begin with, but you spend half of his missions interacting with prostitutes who work for violent pimps and "rescuing" them... So they can work for Zimos, whether they still want to be prostitutes or not. I can drive a tank down the sidewalk with the best of them, but Zimos was my limit.

Some of these choices are questionable… the “least terrible” on the list is literally a violent misogynist, we are supposed to hate the passively cynical woman who lost her whole family even more? How about more of the characters that actually betray the protagonist without cause? RDR2 has several gang members who are more than happy to leave Arthur to die alone, and Grimshaw is not one of them! Javier’s change in attitude actually hurt, he seems like a real ally in the start of the game. Bill’s is frustrating, you really want to punch him. Dutch though? Should be #1 on the list! Then there’s the Dragon Age series. Did Solas get left out because it would be a spoiler to include him?

Well at least his successor knows how to show gratitude After helping her avoid capture, Grace in Dragon Age 2 shows her gratitude to Cirilla Hawke by kidnapping the champion's sister Bethany. She's also mad that her boyfriend died because Hawke had the audacity to defend herself, maybe the boyfriend should've tried "Hello" Anyone in Skyrim can be killed with the proper mod, at least on the computer. PlayStation once had a mod made specifically for protecting your child from every hostility out there, but Bethesda banned it as a kill child mod, that wasn't the purpose of the mod Bethesda lol 🤪

Every other NPC in The Witcher 3 deserves a spot on the list. They all act nice for the 10 seconds it takes to thank you for saving their lives, their sheep and whatnot, and as soon as it's over, they're spitting at your feet when you approach them. Ironically enough, despite being "the bad guys", i found Nilfgaardians to be the most 'respectful' NPCs in the game. And i mean respectful as a rather broad term here. But at least they generally don't threaten to choke you with 3 pounds of steel a mere second after helping them.

If you did do that, the final battle with the hag is hilarious, because Marina will keep swearing at her while you fight. She still won't really thank you until act 3, but considering what she's going through at that moment and her probably being in denial, I found it easy enough to forgive.

Mayrina deserves a pass. She was a grieving widow and a mother to be and sought out Ethel for help in reviving her husband. Ethel convinced her she'd make for a terrible mother, and that Ethel would revive her husband in exchange for the baby. Add knowing squat all about how green hags operated to her terrible mental state, Mayrina was in no condition to be making any deals - and Ethel eagerly took advantage of that. Telling Mayrina that Ethel killed her brothers make Mayrina less hostile toward the player after you kill Ethel. Giving her the staff that controls the undead (allowing her to control her zombified husband) has her neutral towards the player before they part ways and when you reunite and help her out in act 3, Mayrina is on good terms with the player. A better choice for an NPC from BG3 that deserved worse than they got would be Kagha (from the druid grove) or Wulbren Bongle (a deep gnome). Both deserved far worse than what they got for the heinous actions they did/were planning to do.

I suppose the hate is fair, but I always felt that Isolde’s selfishness made sense in the context of DAO, like 90% of the characters are behaving selfishly and being jerks, she just happened to be the one Fantasy French Woman (who I’m pretty sure are actually Fantasy Québécois) among Fantasy Brits. With a history of longstanding occupation and war. The nobility being too concerned with politics to actually be able to act is a major theme of the game, so her being too concerned with her son inheriting her husband’s title to protect her land is thematically appropriate.

With Mayrina, if the hag kills her brothers instead of you being tricked into doing it and you tell her what the hag did, she calls off the deal and is actually grateful to be rescued... Honestly, though.... If it weren't for the other victims killing the hag saves, I'd be more than happy to take Ethel's offer to leave Mayrina with her. @mlmii19339 ай бұрын
I tend to agree that is the real reason people hate her, but the problem is that in TES dragons are spirits and as such are forever bound to thier True Names so unfortunately Paar is doomed to fail in his quest to overcome his nature.

I don’t agree with Mayrina. She does show some gratitude when you help her with her husband and give her the Bitter Divorce wand. Plus she gives you an amazing reward in Act 3 when you actually complete her story with Aunty Ethel. She does not belong on this list for simply being upset that her plans to bring her husband back to life were spoiled by the player regardless of it being the wrong thing to do (giving her baby away) or she was being conned (Connor comes back a zombie). She may be upset after getting out of the cage but her attitude does change.

For different reasons, Ammon Jerro from Neverwinter Nights 2. From the start there is implication that he's the big bad and you end up facing him around the end of Act 2 where it turns out he's also trying to stop the big bad in his own way. However, his own involves slaughtering your home village and eventually killing his own granddaughter (granted he doesn't know its her) after which you're required to have him in your party. There's also Bishop whom, no matter how well you treat, by the end of the game the best you can hope for from him is that he will walk away from the fight rather than betray you.
