There’s certain people who are so ridiculously good at their sport, that I always think they must have made a deal with the devil! People like Dom, Alex Honold (free soloing) Gabriel Medina (surfing) are all just freakishly, impossibly good! Even with all the training and years of commitment, these guys abilities don’t seem real! I’m fairly sure that on the day they die, Lucifer will appear with the contract they signed and say “I hope it was worth it” as he drags there souls to hell!

Yeah that was shocking miscue. The basic rule of three seems to have been developed everywhere. In washington we said once is luck, twice is coincidence, three times is skill. When I went to france is when I first heard once is never that was long before Farang was a thing.

Great video, Jimmy! Great reminder for experienced athletes, and good knowledge for new ones. Further rules I think are worth mentioning: 1. Know your limits and respect them. If you can't do a 10 foot jump, no point in doing a 14 foot one. Parkour's all about breaking limits, but in order to break them you gotta work up to them first. 2. Always mind your surroundings. The worst thing you can do in parkour is cause undue stress or worse, injury, to a bystander you didn't see. If your head is in the clouds, you might also end up doing a line which crosses another athlete's line, which best case is an annoyance and worst case puts you both out of commission. Parkour is a 3 dimensional sport, so before you do a line make sure you look left, right, up, and down and see that the path is clear. 3. Related to this; test out your line before you hit it. You never know if a spot might have broken glass, a loosened stone, some slippery substance, or even bird crap. All the parkour skill in the world won't mean much if the table you're striding off collapses under you. Just do a quick check to make sure all the obstacles are stable and safe before you use them. Unless it's an emergency, of course. 4. Respect the obstacles you go on. Like you said, "leave no trace"; in addition to picking up your trash, that means leaving as little scuffing as possible, and doing your best not to cause damage to anything in the area. Damaging rooftops, furniture, etc. on a run is one of the worst things you can do for the sport. That's my 2 cents for everyone out there. Have fun!

My only issue with thos is in rule number 2, if I'm looking around, and trying to make sure everything is in the clear, I'm going to lose my mindset, especially as someone with major anxiety, worrying about everything is just going to make me think about it to much, and likely never do the jump, or go into it, hesitate midway through, and hurt myself.

A couple things I think could also be included 1. Snaking could be included under a broader concept of just *be aware of the other people around you and be respectful*. (and things) Like watch out for other people doing their lines *and* watch out for *bystanders* and people just walking by, making sure you're not going to run into anyone or get sketchy with it, watching out for kids if you're training on a playground etc. It seems simple but I have had so many random pedestrians like stop and act like they're trying not to get in my way and I'm like no just walk by bro I will wait for you. I'm not here to monopolize the space, I'm the one thats doing something 'irregular' here so you should have the right of way. Another thing that really is just common courtesy. 2. *Check your surfaces*. Make sure things are stable and not going to break, know what the traction is like, etc, so you don't break things or get hurt. -- (more important here is to be aware of what you're jumping on but also part of Leave No Trace which is more than littering but just being respectful to our environments and not causing harm.) I think both of these are important for creating a good image for parkour to the general public so people don't see us as reckless daredevils, and for instance, be afraid that were going to trash the spot or run into them and land on their kids, etc. ----------- Also I think it should be mentioned that knowing when to walk away is not only for getting stuck on a jump but for *fear and judgement* - knowing when to push through and when not to, and in *both cases*, a *safety concern*. Injuries a lot of the time happen when you're trying to force something. - (whether thats because you tried to force something you weren't actually ready for or because you tried to force something that wasn't going and you lost sight of the right kind of headspace to do it safely, etc, this is also when you should ask yourself the reason you're doing the jump.)

Awesome video! I don't do parkour myself, aggressive inliner here, but this still applies to us as well, parkour and rollerblading aren't that different it seems :) About the "once is never": we tend to say "thrice in a row, THEN you can officially do it", which comes down to practically the same

You got me at the point about injuries... It was exactly like you said. I started parkour with like 14-15 and got somewhat decent by 18-19. ...But then i kinda just stoppen practicing :/ For once because i moved away from my hometown and the community i came to love and train with each day back then, but also because i felt like i cant progress any further without hurting myself sooner or later. Just now watching your video i was like "hmm... maybe i could start training again, get involved in the local community, see what i still can do and what i can learn again" But then you said like look at this old dude, he is near 30... and well I am near 30 now and that made me think again: Am i too old to "restart" learning parkour? What will the young folks think of me? Is it responsible to my body? Sooo... anyone have any experience with (re)starting parkour at a relativly "high" age? Do you think i should do it? And what should or can i expect from myself?

I've always wanted to get into parkour, but being a 14 year old living in a rural area makes it hard. My parents probably would only have so much will to drive me to urban places where I have things to parkour, and the only parkourable things within walking distance are sheds, trailers, and empty lots with nothing but tiny difference from eachother, and too much space to jump between them.

but those moments come rarely, more often than not you're just chucking attempt after attempt for hours and getting nowhere. Always better to move on to something else. Who knows, when you come back to the original challenge you might actually get it after a little break

I know it's been over a year, but at 2:46 I noticed that when you go over the wall you are either at the peak of your jump, or coming down from your peak. Normally when doing a move like that it's helpful to do it like that, that way your hands can help guide you into the precision, but you have a lot of distance to cover there. Instead of using your hands to guide you down, use them to push you up and get that extra distance. If you're committed to the lazy vault this can be a bit tough to do, but definitely not impossible. Hope this either helps or you've already figured it out. Also, if my explanation wasn't very good please let me know.

I just started trying free-running a year ago, I’m still learning but something I’ve been forcing myself to do is always get back up, this isn’t too common a problem for free-running youtubers/experts but for newbs like me or just casuals there might be a really bad cut or you’ll tear your arm or something. Don’t lay on the ground and act like you’re dying, get up and go grab your medical supplies from your bag or just walk home.

The whole "listen to your body" thing is so true. I'm 27 and still an avid skateboarder, but I've sprained my knees, and spun both ankles around backwards. I never let any of them heal properly. And so now, while I can still huck big tricks, my knees and ankles will just give out occasionally, like I never flexed those muscles at all. And then swell and hurt for days after a long session

Rule 9. also relates to the philosophy of parkour imo. Like you said in your Jackie Chan video, 'Be strong to be useful' is quite a good attitude to have towards training. Whenever I get impatient, I always remember that I'm in this for the long run, rather than burning out too quickly, and that I want this to be like a practice for me mentally and physically, sort of like Martial Arts. Same if Ive got an injury or am sore, just be patient. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Advice for your lazy vault precision : Kick you legs higher, you feet should be above your hips, so when you are above the wall, you tuck in your legs a little bit and you kick your legs explosively up and in front of you, lije 30° angle or something like that, so this gives you a boost that rises your hips a little bit and make you gain some height and lenght. It's hard to maje this explanation clear by writing, but in a nutshell, throw your feet higher, and kick explosively up and in front of you so that you have a little boost in height and lenght.

Rules of Parkour: 1. No competitions in parkour or comparison. 2. Parkour and free running should not be confused. Free running is a skill (developed by Sébastien Foucan) in which some elements from parkour appear, but various acrobatics and tricks are added to these elements. Freeruning is just showing off or acrobats that loses a lot of energy that you dont need in parkour. You use parkour in emergency (or hobby ) so you have to be as quick as possible to get from point A to point B.

Snaking is a massively common annoyance in snowboarding (or at least it was last time I rode the park) ..oh, and the final point is basically the same as 'never outstay your welcome', which in the case of meeting someone who is busy going about their business, is pretty much anything more than a hello, a complement, maybe a picture, wish them well, and then farewell ..immediately exiting their space 🕉

this made me think of the unspoken dance competitions/conventions 1. If you are leaving the room that you are in(wether it be off-stage to out to lunch in a convention), do not cut the pre-made que.(it happens more than u think, and I have pulled my team back because they were trying to cut in the que) 2. if you see another get scraped or lightly hurt and you have anything first-aid items that could help, help. We don’t care if our companies are competitive enemies, you help one another 3. If there is a mini-competition at a convention, if you are not already in it, stay out of it 4. do not be rude or think your better than anyone else, someone more experienced/someone older will put you in your place no questions asked, although they will be nice abt it that’s all I can think of rn-
