When i was a kid, about 50 years ago, the story going around my school was that a little girl was walking by a cemetary on her way home when something grabbed the back of her sweater and she was so scared she instantly died of fright. The next day when they found her body, her hair had turned completely white. Turns out the thing that grabbed her sweater was just a nail sticking out of a fence post. This story was told and re-told for a number of years and we all believed it 100%.

There's a very similar one that was popular in my neck of the woods that involves a "haunted" grave. As a bravery test (whether it was a standing challenge for every kid in town or a one time bet varied) a teen, usually a girl was challenged to go into the local graveyard to the haunted grave, and stick a knife into the dirt to prove she'd been there. She then couldn't get away, and thinking the body had reached up and grabbed her, died of fright. Come daylight, it turns out she'd stabbed through her (skirt, hoodie, jeans, jacket, etc)

Urban legend: Simon has access to cloning technology and he uses it to run multiple KZbin channels at once. Is this one true?
@PhantomFilmAustralia2 жыл бұрын
The face of "Simon Whistler" is actually high resolution scans from photographs taken in the early 1970s of Gerard Simon-a 36-year-old undertaker and native of Lincoln, Nebraska. The high resolution scans were then digitally face-swapped over an actor's real face. Legend has it that Gerard Simon would lurk around Calvary Cemetery late at night and whistle ballads to lure curious passersby into the cemetery, where he then allegedly garroted them to death. Although the public and the police had their suspicions, (and due to the growing number of missing persons in Lincoln around that time) there simply wasn't enough evidence for authorities to make an arrest. Simon was employed as an undertaker at Calvary Cemetery who often worked the graveyard shift, and since no bodies were found...no charges could be filed. In a 5 year period, eleven people from the town of Lincoln, were filed as 'missing persons,' and no evidence of their disappearances were ever linked to Gerard Simon. On August 4, 1976, he disappeared without a trace. No one had seen him since...and the legend of Simon _'Whistler'_ was born.

When they finally caught and arrested him, the Secret Service agents found a lot more than counterfeit money. Together with the FBI he was charged with a whole litany of crimes (he wasn't even prosecuted for most of them). When my mother was in high school, there was a boy who was bullied in her year who was also in some of her classes. Like her, he was a redhead, but as his was a very frizzy, curly, bright orange compared to my mum's long waves and bright chestnut-auburn, the colour sometimes called "Titian", she didn't get quite as much bullying as him. Many people were annoyed by this kid, and he was, in addition to said red hair, "dorky looking" according to my mum, with three times as many freckles as my mum, bat-like bug ears that stuck out, and a permanently flushed face. That said , whilst she never bullied him, but she did say she was never exactly mean to him either, which she regretted because he never did anything specific to warrant the level of bullying he received. One summer Monday, my mother's entire year/class was pulled into and assembly in the gym. This was specially called to tell them all that this same boy had been killed over the weekend. "Killed" is probably the wrong word for it; what actually happened is that some kind of altercation had happened between this boy later after school on friday, at a time when few were around. It's not clear exactly what happened next, but somehow these bullies dared this 15 year old boy to climb a power pole to either plant his scissor or his protractor at the top of the post (power lines were mostly wood back then, and many are still in this area, as I still live in the same place). Some say it was a dare, or a bribe, but ultimately it didn't matter what the reason or the object was, because whatever the case, what we do know is that he accodentally touched an ungrounded, live wire and was propelled from this 10 - 12m height, and a few metres away, setting both him & the pole in fire, in addition to him falling on the concrete, face up. I don't know any more details other than the fact that he died, obviously, and that my mother and her brothers both knew him and had gone to the same primary school as well as them before high school, and that this was some time in the mid to late 1970's in New Zealand, but this is not why I am sharing this story; I'm sharing it because the case of "No-face Charlie" reminded me of what happened next in the assembly I mentioned earlier... Having heard the announcement of this young teen's death, and the call for a minute of silence then being called for so as to remember him, one of my mum's school friends sitting next to her, was trying desperately to stop laughing, masking it as crying (which she was doing, but this was later revealed to be tears of mirth, not sadnness). Once they were allowed to speak again, my mum obvious asked what she was laugh at---because this was a moment of calm and respect for a boy they were learning maths with only days before. So, what did she say? "His hair," she wheezed, "All I can think about is his hair sticking up on end and crackling with electricity." And the tragic thing is that, by some cruel coincidence this same girl burned to death in a fire five years later when her Parisian flat burned down in the middle of the night. The cause? Faulty electrics, but even more specifically,it was due to rats nibbling on the connection between her apartment and the electric pole; the wind snapped the wire free of the mainline connection the pole wire had to her house, showering sparks onto the pottery tile roof but, more importantly, the (highly flammable) canvas balcony awning, quickly collapsed down, and the curtains flying through the open door immediately caught, tearing through the house in a matter of minutes. I don't know what my point is, sorry. But maybe it's just that "the past was the worst", "don't bully people because of how they look" and, most importantly, "have a healthy fear of being electrocuted, so be safe about interacting with possible hazardous wires and things like that"!!

Why is Simon & Co so popular? Well, because, even with your average listicle they produce content worth hearing.

Probably be better to just have Disney make a crypt for peoples ashes instead of having to deal with people scattering ashes there.

The Falun Gong organ harvesting thing is almost definitely massively overblown. Falun Gong is a pretty notorious organization outside of China for supporting far-right and ultranationalist groups and it doesn't hurt them with those groups to be seen as persecuted for their 'ancient' religious beliefs by a communist government.
