I'm almost 71 now and in the day I first wanted to own a watch Timex was king of the affordable brands and Omega ruled supreme over the high end brands. Rolex was unheard of as were the other high end brands. This watch chat format is really enjoyable; well done.

You guys forgot about the television ads in the ‘60’s when Timex had a Marlin strapped on an outboard motor prop and run in a tank of water to show how tough it was. That ad alone sold 10,000’s of watches in that decade.

I remember that one. Was it John Cameron Swayze who was in that commercial? I worked at a Nuclear plant in Florida late '80s til 2003. A recreational scuba diver got sucked into the cooling water intake pipe (the plant divers assured me he had to have been trying to get into it through the grating) and sued the utility, then, a year or two later, his face is on a Full page Timex magazine ad bragging about how his Timex watch took a beating through his harrowing experience.

I love the SMITHS mentioned at the end. I am a big fan and own several of them because I'm a sucker for nostalgia. My favourite Smiths is a little gold capped model called the "Empire" which I found at a flea market in Covent Garden. It was a very difficult time for me because I was dealing with depression. However, this little watch with its super loud tick made me so happy and even helped me overcoming this bad time. It still gets its due wrist time 4 years later.

About the first homage watches: there were homage watches way before the Invicta Pro Diver. Look at all the 1960-70's designs, the companies copied each other back then, there's a Tissot Seastar that looks the same as an Omega Seamaster. Just one example. Cool video TGV and Marc!

Great interview TGV. Marc shared a ton of fascinating knowledge. But about the first manufacturer of homages (44:10) I remember vividly that Sekonda pioneered the wholesale marketing of discount homages in the 1980's. At that time, my best buddy at school received an extremely impressive Datejust homage for his sixteenth birthday, in a bi-metal gold and stainless steel finish, beset with twelve sparkling synthetic diamonds for the hour markers. Back in 1988, this impressive-looking hunk of glam horology was virtually identical in size and weight to a genuine Rolli, but only retailed for about GBP£50. As far as we were concerned, was the absolute business and would have been perfect on the wrists of either Crockett or Tubbs. (After all, it's not as if their Ferrari Daytona was any more real!)

A top video! "When I was a lad" and "back in the day" I can so relate to this. Thank you for bringing back old memories in a fun and educational way. I'd like to think Longines are back on the way up recently (I've never owned one so far.....) but agree with you there was a dip.I also think Omega are in a renaissance with there movements and do not feel afraid to take the odd chance with new releases. The current Seamaster 300 M is a work of art in white in my insignificant humble opinion. The previous Seamaster 300 Chrono (valjoux 7753 movement heavily modified with column wheel and coaxial escapement) was for me the most functional chrono in a long time, simple things like all chrono hands are red with some lume if I recall correctly, simple but brilliant for a user. The replacement from an aesthetic looks are arguably more pleasing to the eye and has a brilliant in house 9900 movement but from a tool watch perspective has lost something. I guess these days the market wants form over function. Once again great video. Still great watches though, it would be great to see a UK watch with a UK movement with the Made in UK label with under the Smiths brand.

My favourite brand is Mido. They made some great watches. They are a older company than Rolex and was at one time the top Swiss watch manufacturers. I have three of their watches. One from the 40's, one from the 60's and a early 70's one. I believe Adolf Schild was one of the founders of Mido. They recently done a reissue or reimagining of one their 60's divers. They still make some very nice watches.

Swatch Group as Omega, Longines, Tissot, Rado, etc. Mido is a great watch and the brand was mainly targeted at the South American market decades ago.

it seems the swatch group brands are promoted in turn around the world so that here in the us mido and rado are not that common but tissot, hamilton and omega are. but if you live elsewhere you will have a different reference point of swatch brands. it is smart on the part of the swatch group, but i wasn't really aware of mido until the past couple years or so.

I agree on invicta changing around 2002. I purchased one in Florence in 2002 and was completely different. No wings symbol, had a coat of arms in the case back and the entire watch was completely written in French. Swiss Rhonda quartz chronograph movement. Right after that you see the winged logo miyota automatics. A complete design change.

I like the winged logo of Invicta. The winged Swiss cross, tells the story of the company...Invicta was born and raised in Switzerland . The brand faced what seemed like certain extinction, as a result of the quartz crisis. Fortunately the brand was rescued by an American investment company, and was re-launched under new management and a new business model. Hence the wings of the logo... Like a phoenix, Invicta rose from the ashes to become the Invicta we all know as the Marmite watch brand we know today.

Yes, pre 2002-vintage 1940’s are decent quality, but after the brand purchase, they became oversized fashion watches, that completely screwed the watch marketplace with their astronomical fake msrp( due to selling via home shopping network on tv). I’ve recently added two Invicta Pro Divers to my collection. One is the all gold plated one with the black dial and the other one is the two tone blue dial version. Couldn’t be happier. No quality issues whatsoever, chapter ring lines up perfectly, date switches at midnight and they both run at 2 seconds fast. Couldn’t be happier. They look the part and if they’d get lost, stolen or robbed they’re cheap enough to replace which makes them the perfect holiday watch for sketchy countries! 🤪

Hi TGV I think everyone is more innovative as youngsters - seems to go for many watch companies too. And in as far as the companies really are still fairly innovative (-like modern Omega) the problem seems to be connecting with the brands heritage. Greed is one of the things that can spoil it all. The fact that new generations are working in the companies is kind of natural. It’s more a matter of attitude. It’s complicated... Agree on most of your standpoints. Luckily we can still dig in the past and buy amazing vintage pieces - often for a bargain price tag, if you know what you’re dealing with😊 Wonderful video from the two of you as usual. Bought my first luxury watch on grey market (joma shop) the omega had dust in dial. Long story short, it was a long process to right it. Cost me a lot of money. Ended up fixing it, trading it in to yet another grey market place online. That was for a black bay 58. Which I own right now. Anddd it’s losing 6 seconds per day. Luckily, it does have the manufacture warranty. But it’s still unfortunate. I’m done on grey market! Just ordered an omega from a well known AD last week.

I grew up on Timex and wore those exclusively for almost 40 years. It pains me to hear what you say about Timex, but you’re right. For the time being, we have to say their glory days are behind them. It’s be nice to see Timex earn themselves a name again.

I love when you guys meet to talk about watches! Thank you for teaching me a brief history of these brands, it brings so much context into this new amazing world of watches! Anyone have a good recommendation for a perpetual calendar/chronograph or dive bezel? I really need day date + timer. If possible below 42mm please!
