Great video 👍. I’d recommend a) stay off Insta, b) don’t pray at the alter of the brand name, c) spend more time researching brands you’ve never heard of than looking at Rolexes, d) always remember most of the price charged by big brands is to pay to keep Roger Federer, Michael Bublé and all the other ‘ambassadors’ whose photos adorn those ultra-expensive gin-palace boutiques (you’re paying for that too) in the wealth to which they have already become accustomed, e) first wear what you have already, and f) when you want to buy put the watch in your cart and leave it there for three days, then go back and ask yourself if you’re really sure you still want it.

Agree but sometimes it is necessary to make mistakes, to experience and own a watch you liked at the beginning or in pictures to realise that it is in fact the wrong one afterwards. Difficult to tell from the very beginning what suits you, what you feel comfortable with. I think that making a couple of mistakes is a necessary part of the process

Because quartz almost killed the watch industry, the legacy brands don't look at them too kindly, or only survived because they went upscale and convinced everyone mechanical is superior quality and quartz is lifeless.

@@gilbertoflores7397 I think most of the antiquartz snobs don't even know what the quartz crisis was.

@@suic86 but that is where the idea of quartz being inferior came from, which they passed on to their customers. So now the average watch enthusiast hears when they're first getting into watches, only get automatics, and quartz a gross.

It's because the seconds hand doesn't align with the indices on most quartz. Deep down, that's where it's coming from.

I am in love with my Seiko 5 watches, SNKL41J1 and SNXS79J1. They are only a couple of seconds per day late and early respectively so if you tolerate initial inaccuracy of 30 or 40 seconds when setting the time you don't have to adjust the time for some 3 weeks. One can learn to stop the seconds when setting the time. Each of the two watches is by far prettier than any Rolex I've seen, yet they cost me only about $110 each.

i just bought my first watch ever and it’s the SNXS79J1. It looked like a gem on photos and pretty suitable for a beginning of a collection. Hyped to wear it when it arrives

Great sound advice! Patience, I just started my watch collection and have 2, an Kamasu red dial and a Seiko 5 sport orange dial, and they match my Chuck Taylor shoes, which I love and wear every day.

A thought on dress watches for people who don't dress-up: I don't go out much, wear suits often, or favor the style of most dress watches. Where I do have a soft spot for them is what they represent to me. If I can wear one, it means there is nothing that needs to be done that day, and I can relax.

Very sound advice from yourself and the viewers 👍 I think patience is a good thing, a virtue even. All the watches on earth aren't going to vanish if you dont buy them 😊 Automatic, Quartz, Solar? Buy what you like and enjoy, personally I like all 3.

Man this is a great one. Deserves more views. You are spot on with pretty much everything! I've been into watches for 4 years and made MOST of these mistakes 😅 Patience is a great tip.... take your time and don't fall for hype.. If i could go back, i would have saved so much just getting my g shock and w86 casio to begin with and then taking my time and very slowly saving for something special My taste has changed so much. I've actually gone full circle back to my Omega 2503.50.00 as i had huge regret selling it And YES 100% Black bay is just horrible and boring (for ME and my opinion only) Find out what you love, slowly. No rush... and enjoy exploring Even vintage man. I owned a Seiko Skyliner briefly. From 1970s. Off ebay for less than £300 from Japan. Looked like a vintage datejust honestly Only sold as not practical with no water resistance and i decided to get that aqua terra so... Loving your videos man ❤

Agree with most of what you say. I own a Rallygraf shown on your video with the same strap. Wonder if I bought it from you, like the Attowak, which I sold on quickly. Homage watches are great as part of a collection, but agree, they shouldn't take over. You missed out brand snobbery, that's a massive mistake

Two things put me off the Tissot PRX.....The Machanical version has that crap waffle dial, while the quartz version has the awesome blue sunburst. Ideally for me, it would be the other way round. Secondly, I'm not a fan of 'integrated bracelets'.

Two Casios, each with 100m water rating, screw down backs, analog display and both gorgeous and second hands are spot on with the index. $100 delivered for both. Invicta pro diver automatic submariner clone (I'm not ashamed) $53 delivered. Gorgeous blue dial Bambino automatic with fine chain mesh bracelet $150 delivered. Very nice Olevs black on black on black leather quartz with just the right amount of gold applied indexes and Roman numerals (hour hand is slightly off when minute hand at 12:00) $25 delivered. Puritan (Walmart off-the-shelf) beautiful sunburst emerald green dial, day/date, matte finish stainless steel, Miyota quartz, $12.88 fourteen years ago and still chugging along (currently $13.88). It's my least accurate quartz watch but still within a few seconds/month. I love the damn thing! I can appreciate the higher end intricate mechanical watches that are accurate no matter which position they are oriented, but I'm happy with what I have. I'm not looking to impress anyone, and haven't, nor would I impress anyone if I had a Rolex or Omega.

A corollary to a few points you have already made: the one thing that annoys me the most is “no collection is complete without (insert brand name here, in my case G Shock or Seiko). This is sadly perpetuated and taken advantage of by so many watch reviewers and it’s very appealing to people that like to call themselves collectors when in fact they’re nothing more than consumers.

Any hobby that involves collecting have snobs at all levels. Learn to ignore them. Even at the lower end. Like what you like and try keeping most things private, so you don't get persuaded into things you don't like.

Quartz watches are annoying if you have several watches. You pick up the watch to wear and the battery has gone. Absolutely annoying, Quartz watches are for children, l would never buy one again. You can get automatic watches for around like the Seiko 5 for around £100. I buy Homage watches l love then ,each Homage watch l have bought, l have tried on the original and apart from the name l'm not complaining at all and extremely happy.
@TopTierTicker

What about everytime you pick up a mechanical watch from the collection and it's dead, needs a wind and you have to set the date? Not annoying too?
@gilbertoflores7397
@gilbertoflores7397 Жыл бұрын
@@TopTierTickerpretty sure if you record the time it takes to swap a battery; less than 5 minutes, and add up all the time you waste setting the date and time of a automatic watch, you'll fund you waste much more time setting the auto than the quartz. And who exactly is setting down a quartz watch for more than a year? Most battery last more than a year, casino having 2 year batteries. You might have a serious problem of you're constantly picking up dead quartz watches.
@malikshabazz7596

@TopTierTicker Not at all settling time and winding the watch takes seconds. Battery now, leave the place you live, shower ,eat may have to drive take or take public transport, spend money on the battery,that's sacrilege, annoying. That's like riding a horse and cart ,it's ancient, that's Quartz to me.
@malikshabazz7596
@malikshabazz7596 Жыл бұрын
@gilbertoflores7397 5 minutes to swap out a battery how many people have a spare battery sitting around at home. Then have the expertise to open the watch and change the battery. No Quartz watch is like horse and cart, like black and white televisions.
@gilbertoflores7397
@gilbertoflores7397 Жыл бұрын
@@malikshabazz7596 you sound very ignorant. The antiquated method is mechanical. And it takes a more than a minute to set the time, unscrewing it, winding it, changing the date/day, and then getting the time just right, if you're obsessed with time, you'll need to wait to get it synced to the exact second. That takes a fair amount of time to do ever few days, when it loses its power reserves. That'll happen like every other day if you have multiple different watches you rotate, say that takes 2 minutes, over the course of that year you'll waste more than than a battery swap.
