Finally a man after my own heart. I've been hounded by family and friends to get a smartwatch and I repeat almost verbatim to them your exact same thoughts as mine on smartwatches. That and I explain that I appreciate the craftsmanship and detail that goes into making a real watch. I own 115 watches. Everything from Casio to Citizen, Seiko, etc., and the fact I rarely if ever use my cell phone for calls and texts much less dig it out of my pocket to tell the time.

smartwatches are in no way a threat to the watch industry, coming from someone who absolutely loves watches and has even built a few. They have their position in the watch world if being useful for tracking biometrics while also being convenient and I would argue an apple watch is even necessary in a collection because it is so useful due to all of its health capabilities. I don’t wear my iwatch to impress people, but rather because of its useful purpose. One could argue that watches are obsolete because we always have the time on our phone, however we all love a collection of tiny gears that magically keeps time and has its own heartbeat, and that’s why we have them

There is also another way of looking at smartwatches, and that's that they have gotten an entire generation used to wearing something on their wrist- a generation that would otherwise not have anything on their wrist at all. With this as a starting point, a certain percentage of them may end up wearing actual watches once they grow up a bit, and have overcome their FOMO. That being said, I don't like them either. Literally nobody *needs* an extra small extra screen with limited functionality strapped to their wist. I'd rather see them wear real watches but I'd also rather see them wear smartwatches than nothing at all.
@TopTierTicker
@TopTierTicker Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get that point of view. But I also think there's a large proportion of people who would wear a traditional timepiece if the smart watch didn't exist. Even if it was just for a fashion statement. I would personally say that the smartwatch has done more harm that good. But the hype and excitement for them seems to be dying now and hopefully we see a lot more new watch enthusiasts!
@EEE_MMM
@EEE_MMM Жыл бұрын
@@TopTierTicker I sure hope so! Given the price point I would assume many smartwatch wearers might otherwise have worn fashion watches from the same price bracket-- not much is lost on those. And many might have worn decent watches like Seiko, Oriënt or Citizen... We'll never know 😉

100% agree that you should buy watches that you like. But, my mentality when it comes to investment watches is that its good to have just one of those watches that holds it value, and even goes up even when used. Cause you never know when you may need some quick cash in the future. With that you could just sell that one watch and maybe two others from your collection and still keep most of your collection, win-win hahaha
@TopTierTicker
@TopTierTicker Жыл бұрын
Hey listen, as an educated watch enthusiast, it's easy knowing which watches have good retention value. So of course there's watches out there that you both like and have a good chance of gaining some value. That particular point was more aimed at new enthusiasts who just want a quick one and done watch and they want something that will make them money. No passion for the hobby, no love for the craftsmanship. Of course retention value is a point to consider, but it's not the be all and end all.

@@TopTierTicker ah man yeah, I've had a few watches on my search for "the one" , including a Speedy 1861, Hamilton Pilot Pioneer, Hamilton khaki auto, and IWC Mark 16. Each time I sold them to get the next one (I can only afford one expensive watch) So now my watches are: -Aqua Terra -G shock 5600e (the best G shock ha ha) - Casio W86 (great watch) - Old titanium citizen which is like 42mm and probably 14mm thick but it was a special gift, so I just keep it.. -Enicar 1960s little 35mm dress watch I got on a trip at an antique shop in Whitby... cheap little thing but has a stunning manual winding action and sounds great To be honest, I think now all I need is my G shock and the Omega P.s. I have a few Bulang and Sons straps that I'll use on the Omega. You ever tried them? Expensive but absolutely fantastic. I love the Speedy racing one and many others And also I hear you're after a Speedmaster some day. Don't blame you... they are just absolutely gorgeous. I only sold mine because I found it a little too bulky as my only watch. I wanted something thinner and also better water resistance. But if money was no object, I would absolutely keep one for occasional use I got it for £4000 back in 2019 and sold it for £3000... one of the most painful experiences...if only I would have kept it for a few years, I would not have lost anything.... but I needed that money for the next obsession

I've got what I would describe as a 'typical emaciated homeless drug addict' physique, (Rock climbing was my thing, so I always tried to keep my power to weight ratio fairly high), so big watches really wouldn't suit my skinny wrists. I'd absolutely LOVE to own a genuine Second World War Luftwaffe B-Uhren Flieger watch, but that massive 55mm dial just wouldn't suit me, plus I'd be terrified of causing any damage to an irreplaceable historic artifact.

I’ve seen other watch pontiffs say the Apple watch is a gateway for non-smart watches. Seems like that could hold some water. Although I got my first smartwatch about 6 months ago and it created a dilemma. I wear an automatic or quartz watch every day. I often change watches during the day as well. I got an Apple Watch ultra so I could better keep track of my exercise regimes, monitor sleep and heart rate. So how was I going to do that and still wear all the time pieces I love? Well now I wear a watch on each wrist. Yep. Now I’m one of those guys 🤷🏻‍♂️

The problem with the point "Smart watches aren't real watches they are more like computers, real watches are there to tell the time" is that people are very hypocritical when using that argument. They will gladly use that that argument for Apple, Garmin, Polar etc, but fail to use that on Casio( which many Casio model offer Bluetooth connectivity, message alerts etc..). People often forget that when Casio first released some of their most famous digital models, watch snobs were the first to call this new "digital watch thing" a heresy. Why is a Garmin that is used for outdoor training not a "real watch" just because it does many other functions than telling the time, but a Casio that has ABC functions, Bluetooth connectivity, step tracking and notification a "real watch"? For most of the people I know that now have a quarts or mechanical watch, the smartwach was their "gateway drug" to the world of watches. By hating on smart watches and people who use them, we are no different that the people who hated Casio and did not consider digital watches as "real watches". To sum up, yes a smart watch is as much of a watch as any other watch.

In regards to # 8, should we make those same accusations against the small mom and pop shops that sell and resell watches? So, we penalize the entrepreneurs who want to get started to make money in an industry where many varieties of watches are available? How do you account for this? Are you concluding that only retailers should have the privilege to sell watches? Where does it all begin and end when it comes to what you’re citing and a legitimate person that would like to start a business legitimately and how would the average person/consumer tell the difference?

Cartier is a strange one. They aren't your typical watch brand, with them selling jewellery, accessories and fragrances. They get a lot of respect because of their history. And they hold some iconic designs. I certainly don't consider them as a pinnacle of watchmaking, more so a very classy jewellery producer. Your average solar steel Tank doesn't come close to what Nomos are creating for the same price for example. However the name carries a lot of weight.
