Nathan, what you mean with better? You mean aesthetically to YOUR liking? Because there is guaranteed nothing like its better if the parameters aren’t defined. But as I go for aesthetic’s first, there is many I go for first. Grand Seiko pretty much up there. But then its as I said, I like their design language a lot and thats what attracts me to GS over Rolex. But at the end they are both great watches and people should buy more what they really like and not what someone told them or is “in”. There is so many interesting watches out there.

Seriously. I have one of their LUC Sport 2000s and, on top of the technical prowess, it has the level of finishing that you’d expect from a brand with such a jewelry heritage. Also incredibly versatile, whether dressed down on a rubber strap or a steel bracelet, or peacocking with some exotic leather like ostrich or alligator.

Pro divers wear Citizen. The best for the job. What watch people think of as divers wouldn’t even be in the realm of consideration. Other side of the coin: Watch people don’t generally wear citizen, despite the quality and innovation. Citizen sells the first titanium watch back in 1970s. Watch people ignore. Rolex makes its first titanium watch in 2022. Watch people call it “innovation”.

And not bothered about knocking it about Abit, also ISO CERTIFIED, and I didn't have to let the AD sleep with my wife😁😁 Have a samurai and monster, which both are fantastic watches,' after a changed the bracelets' Bought a nice swiss made Hamilton but it cost me twice the price¡!!! Definitely, and I sure wouldn't take a multi-thousand dollar watch diving, because stuff can, and does happen. I keep a Casio Duro as a back-up just in case. If you don't want to spend big bucks on a Rolex Daytona or Omega Speedmaster you can always buy the Seiko Solar Speedtimer. They have a 39MM version and newer 41MM version both of which are great watches for people with small wrists. Unlike many cheaper Seiko watches this comes with sapphire crystal and fairly decent bracelet with a milled clasp. I would buy one but I already got the Seiko Alpinist SPB155.

Most of the watches brought up here use leather or rubber straps. Mostly because it's really hard to make a mass produced bracelet as comfortable and good looking as Rolex's, without straight up copying their design. Most Rolex watch buyers prefer sports watches on bracelets, so that means most of the watches suggested here wouldn't be ever considered.

It’s sad that the only way we can discuss watches that aren’t Rolexes is by framing them in relativity to Rolex, who are consistently the least interesting brand in terms of design and engineering. Their marketing and sales techniques are, of course, peerless and industry-leading, which is why I’d rather keep the conversation around Rolex restricted to luxury marketing seminars and let actual watch collectors freely appreciate and share watches on their own terms.

I absolutely love your videos and appreciate the perspective you bring. I am probably in the minority but I would love to see more heavy duty manual wound tool watches especial with these new movements that are being produced with 5 or 8 day power reserves do you really need an automatic anymore. There is just something special about winding a well constructed watch movement, but I am sure most people would not want to be bothered with that.

I am happy to have finally bought a Rolex .. second hand of course .. and I was lucky to get it for around retail cost. An Air-King 116900. I have every expectation that this will be my only Rolex .. ever. Cuz I don’t earn Rolex money. But I do have two lovely Tudors (an S&G Chrono, and an S&G GMT). As well as to Bremont watches (one recently bought for an utter bargain that would make you cry). But my urge for Rolex has been satisfied. I always thought I wanted a GMT Master II … but it turns out I wanted a Rolex I could, and would, actually wear. I love Bremont watches but they are massively overpriced as new. However, second hand you can get them for a much more digestible price. And frankly .. Tudor is where it’s at .. as far as Rolex goes. Buy Tudor, instead of hype.

I can’t write even one more word in that story. Yet it is one more thing or area of life I find we have in common, as men and human beings. Sadly, most folks will still go for Rolex. Kudos to Rolex for being a great seller.

It is not sad at all. This is the power of the Rolex brand owing to it's worldwide dominance and notoriety. You can't replace that with all of these other brands. For almost all people, it does not matter how many times you tell yourself "buy what you like", people desire to own brands that have value to others. This is most important in the pseudo wealthy crowd, where really - middle income people buy aspirational items - they only mean something if their friends know what they are. A Hermes bag that doesn't have the Hermes name on it, is not worth anywhere near the same amount even if it's the exact same bag. These are facts. There are many vehicles better than a Ferrari, but people aspire to have that. Not as good as example as they are not really attainable to the mid class. High middle class is where watches are marketed. There's not enough 1%'ers to support the watch industry with highest priced items. The low income folks subsidize those sales.

@@JayandSarah All it proves is that a lot of people buy to impress others, a lot of very insecure people seeking validation through a watch.
@ivanharlokin

@@garyboyle695That's true, but as a watch fan, I think that Rolex watches have near perfect proportions, and really great build quality in the movement, cases, and bracelets (unlike some Swatch group brands). Sadly Rolex come with a lot of bullshit baggage, for the reason you stated.

@@garyboyle695 nobody spends $20 grand or $100 grand on a watch without some level of motivation to impress others. Anyone that says otherwise is just full of it.

A good pick for Seiko would have been the SLA037 or SLA043. Rolex level watch making for 3-4k

When you own more than two Rolex you either stick with it or you just put it next to your Yema sous marine and realise the name recognition isn't worth 6500$ more.

Have you actually tried turning the bezel on the Seamaster? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ and you still think it’s better than the sub? I also have the Seiko. The lume is uneven and poorly applied, the 12 o’clock mark on the bezel has overrun paint application and the time keeping is poor at best.

Oddly the Sub turns with more ease above water, but they turn equally as easy when diving.

There are plenty of watches on Ali Express that flip Rolex the finger for the same price you'd drop at Argos.

I think that every serious collector needs 1 Rolex. I have a grey dial Yacht Master, and I love it. It's also likely my last. Patek, AP, VC, FPJ is what I collect. Those are art pieces. We aren't really buy watches cuz we need them. There's no point to buy a watch that doesn't have character, or isn't artistically made.

The Sinn UX laughs in the face of the sea dweller, or any other so called tough diver come to think of it. Tegimented case, 10k water resistance in an oil filled case without a helium escape valve in sight. Probably the toughest diver to be had?

A Seiko Sharp Edged SARX077 is a replacement for a Grand Seiko, which is a replacement for any Rolex Datejust, maybe even a Rolex Perpetual coloured dials, given that the date window is virtually colour matched - just saying!

MAD 1 in person looks madly bad finished and super cheap. It takes to win a lottery to get one...if you are "lucky" to win it then you will find out soon, when you receive it, what a piece of junk it really is and that in fact, luck was not on your side. It is very generous to put it as a Rolex substitute considering that the movememt is used in DIY watches and the finishing is as good as Invicta, making it as the most hyped watch out there. Voices are that Max Brusser gives them out for free to journalists...

Let's get over it, almost anything is better than a Rolex considering quality and price. Masses will buy a Rolex as a social symbol and as an investment (meaning that you will eventually sell that watch).... meaning any watch that you will want to keep is not bought as an investment, like a Bulova accutron 2020, the Seiko range with any spring drive Caliber, Jaeger Lecoultre, the amazing good looking speedmaster with the only readable chronograph in the world on a watch, a cheap 2003 seamaster pro with the double folding clasp and natural rubber bracelet adjustable for divers, the list is endless !!!

Not sure if I’d say that the Black Bay Pro is BETTER than the Explorer II. Its a more affordable alternative that offers a lot of bang for the buck. If the Tudor and the Rolex were priced the same, the Rolex is better
