Wear your cheapest watch when shopping for another watch. If the sales assistant treats you with disdain then buy from elsewhere. Don’t have the dial on the inside of your wrist. That’s silly. If you’re gonna remove links, remove them from each side equally so the buckle sits centrally on the other side of your wrist. If you enjoy having the seconds hand of a chronograph run then let it. If it’s automatic then that’s fine, doesn’t have to point at 12 all the time. Always find something nice to say about other peoples watches, even if you don’t like them (or their watches) My biggest one. How your watch sits on your wrist in relation to your ulnar styloid (the nobbly bit on the little finger side of your wrist). Distal, proximal or over it. I still haven’t figured this one out and it kills me.

There's an exception on the "don't wear your watch over you clothing" rule: if you're wearing a skintight neoprene diving suit, air tanks, weighted belt, mask, and flippers, and you're going to dive into an actual body of water. If this outfit is your sartorial choice for taking the bus to Ealing do not wear your watch over the suit, it'll look silly.

The «Looking at the watch during conversation» can be a powerful tool. At work people tend to trap me between meetings, in the hallways or at the coffee machine. This is a non-scheduled meeting, I have limited time. If its so important they can send an E-Mail or book an actual meeting. One glance at the watch and they know they’re stealing time. On the flipside it gives the watch another function than timetelling, its a symbol, to get in line, that there are other more important matters.

Re:Rule Number 3, Fitbit actually solved this for me! They make a model called the Luxe which is thin and can get thin bracelet-like attachments to make it fit nicely in a bracelet stack on the opposite wrist. Then you can turn off the always on display (so you have to aggressively tap it to see the time), and turn off notifications. Now, I basically just use it for fitness and sleep tracking and still wear a mechanical watch regularly.

Other than "commander" and Saturn V, also you can wear your watch over the shirt sleeve if your title is "Lawyer" and your name is "Gianni Agnelli", who famously wore both his ploprof and his Patek 1415hu over the sleeve (and he was doing it in order to avoid the sleeve to be consumed rubbing against the watch). Oh, and who also owned Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Innocenti, Autobianchi etc etc... My rule? Try to associate colors well: and no, black boots don't go well with blue belt and brown strap. So, belt/shoes/strap should be, if not the same color, at least be well amalgamated.

The first 3 all got me, but I've got a good excuse! One watch I'm thinking of selling for put out of sight for about a month to see how it felt, and when I put it back on finally, I found it too loose. Guess I lost weight, need to resize it, but no time before work, so loose it is for now. And I'm going to be inside the Arctic Circle come late January, and I'm going to wear my watch on the outside of my sleeve. I'm not pulling up my sleeve to check the time in sub zero Fahrenheit temps! And I wear a watch on each wrist, fun watch on the left, smart on the right. Really only want to track health stuff, and the smartwatch was expensive and before I got back into watches, so I'm wearing both for now. When it dies, I'll probably replace it with a ring instead, no need for 2 watches.

I wear an oversized g-shock over my sleeve when wearing a thick polar hoodie in my cold house. The hoodie has sleeve retainers that make it hard to dig out the watch when it's on the wrist, and if I pull the sleeve up I get unevenly cold on one wrist compared to the other. And come on, it's a g-shock, I've been shoveling snow today with the thing on my sleeve, it didn't care, so I won't either.

I don't really have any watch rules. However I know most people would find the way I wear my watches too tight, I did do the whole traditional and smart watch thing for a bit but I found it defeated my purpose for wearing a traditional watch in the first place (a way to have a grounding device when anxious) because my smart watch would just inevitably make me anxious. I also have broken the smart phone / looking at watch rule around close friends (they know I do it as a way to control anxiety when it kicks up so around them not so much a faux pas, I don't do it around people I'm less close to I just find other ways to fidget) - so yeah I definitely have a long stay in watch jail!

I think the sizing advice is not good because it doesn’t necessarily work for smooth metal bracelets, for example mine is tight enough because I cannot slide my i finger under it, but, the whole watch still slides down to the bone at the wrist! Additionally if I do a push-up or sprain my wrist the same bracelet WILL constrict my arm AND leave a mark.. so ..yeah I think it’s appropriately sized but it STILL slides down to the wrist

Plastic watches with a suit. Especially a dark suit. I have known some fresh out of school young accountants and attorneys, where all ‘partner track’ at a large firm… And what ways ‘killed it’ for me was: 1. Plastic, digital watches (yes, some swatches are clean - dialed mechanical)…. 2. Wrap around mirror lenses (orange in particular), that are meant for use during a triathlon. Suit and tie? Mechanical watch. Leather or metal band. And sunglasses? If your glasses are the same brand name as the athletic shoes you work out in - no. Suit and tie are ‘analog’…your accessories should also be. Even no tie, but a sports coat is analog.

Usually, only dress watches and tool watches on specialized straps (NATO, bund strap or rubber diving strap) are supposed to be worn "above-the-bone". Wearing watch on a shiny metal bracelet above-the-bone defies the whole purpose of the shiny metal bracelet. Metal bracelet is a jewelry, no matter how brutal it may look. Wearing a luxury watch on heavy metal bracelet below-the-bone is a subtle flex (or a parody of a subtle flex in a case of Invicta Bolt). It is the same type of flex as wearing Converse High Tops with a 3-piece suit like David Tennant's Doctor Who.

Shit 🤦🏾‍♂️ that last one I’ve done so many times. I haven’t even noticed I was doing it, maybe it’s a short attention span thing? When someone is boring me with some trivial shit about their life my brain wants to watch my watch sweeping for some light relief. Didn’t realise how rude it was… thank you so much 😂😂

As a watch collector, I almost always wear two watches, one on each wrist. Mechanical, vintage, quartz, big, small, whatever fits the mood or my outfit. No smartwatches though. Live is to short to just enjoy one watch a day😎

I think rule 5 can be excused under one circumstance: if the very topic you happen to be discussing is the watches you're wearing. Feel free to whip it out and show it-- the watch, that is. Rule 6: wear what you want. Wear what you like. Don't let others tell you what that's supposed to be.

That would include replicas then

@@andreleverettejr3747 I think the people who wear illegal replicas aren't bothered by "the rules". They just want a timepiece that looks like something expensive and I assume they don't care as much for watches per se. (Disclaimer: this is all assumption.)

Andrew won't tell you which wrist to wear your watch on. I will. If you're right handed it goes on your left wrist. Left handed? You got it, right wrist. Seeing as watches have been in a bit of a resurgence, I don't think many getting into it ever had anybody to tell them. Non-dominant wrist, people. Also, don't wear it ON your wrist bone. It goes just higher. Andrew did kinda cover that with the flopping around bit cuz it doesn't go on your hand either. But man wrist shots on social media are cringe sometimes for more than just way too tight watches.

I wear a traditional watch on my left wrist, and a smartwatch on the right. Guilty as charged. BUT. I need to monitor my steps and my heart, and I haven't yet found a smartwatch that is both aesthetically pleasing and effective at its job, and I love traditional watches too much. Hence, I dual wield. Society seems to tolerate people covered in piercings and tattoos, so I guess it will be fine if a guy wears two watches. ;-) Cheers! //Rick (Psst… I'm a subscriber.
