Midnight tonight (6 Jan 2019) will complete day five of my fast. Somewhere between the 72 to 96 hour mark, your hunger (cravings) are gone. I started fasting before I heard of Dr Berry, Dr Fung, Low Carb Down Under, Butter Bob Briggs et al. 2012 was my first long fast, it began with a stomach virus, and lasted 60 days (yes. Sixty). Since then my health has been better, but my weight has crept back up again to 280lbs due to poor eating timing ("when" is important too). This fast will end Friday night, then wife and I will go for a long weekend. But this is a warm-up for another long fast. Wednesday, 15 Jan at 00:00. Until true hunger returns.

You must use an electrolyte drink of salt and potassium. I use Redmon's Real Salt and Morton's lite salt which is potassium and at least 200 mg with splash of apple cider vinegar. 1/4 tsp each in a 1 litre bottle of water and. You may want to up that to a half teaspoon each. You can look up other recipes online.

I’m on day 7 of my water, black coffee, and green tea fast. My body will tell me when to stop but hopefully I can go 10-14 days. Maybe longer? For those of you on the fence about prolonged fasting, start on a keto diet first and I/F at something like 18/6. Progress to OMAD (23 hours) and then gradually go 36, 48, and 72 fasting hours. Once you get past 72 hours, it gets easier to go longer. Do a fast once a season. Tip: replace your electrolytes daily, pink mineral salts help because your body will dump a lot of water out of your system leading to dizzying effects. For me , the true weight loss is about 7/10’s of a pound per day of lost fat compared to what the weight scale shows because a lot of it is water. Your weight scale will show huge drops in numbers. However, what you see in the mirror of yourself will be significantly better after a prolonged fast. Best wishes!

If anybody is on the fence about trying Fasting and Keto, just jump in. You won't regret it. I'm 57, have had a heart attack and have a pacemaker. The first week I lost 11 lbs. which they say is mostly water weight. Nothing the 2nd week or the 3rd week. I was discouraged after 2 weeks of not losing, but I thought if you told me I would have lost 11 lbs after 3 weeks, I would have been super happy, so I decided to keep going. I'm so happy I did. I lost a little the next couple weeks, but the magic began happening at about 7 weeks. I began to get energy levels that I haven't had in decades. The weight started to melt off of me. In the last 3 weeks, I've lost 16 lbs. Weigh in is once a week and I can't wait to get on the scale. Nine weeks in and I'm down 36lbs, feeling great, and believing that I can actually lose the last 40-50 lbs I have left. Just do it. The only issue I've had is some night leg cramps, which as I understand it is a common problem. It's hard to get all of your nutrition, especially potassium, in just one or 2 meals. I've switched to a combination of Morton's 1/2 salt (which is half potassium chloride) and Redmonds Real Salt. A shake in my coffee or on the tip of my tongue to help get my levels up. Hopefully this will work. I also take a magnesium supplement as it could also be a magnesium deficiency causing it. I'm not sure my cardiologist would approve of this diet, but I don't care. I'm losing weight, my blood work has dramatically improved and that's what matters. Not his opinion or what diet I should be eating.

Something I would like to share with everyone. My blood sugar on keto is now normal but I was still having trouble with the "Dawn Affect", (waking up with high blood sugar) I asked God's help with this and instantly a thought came into my head. Eat some lightly steamed veggies an hour or two before bed. Over the last four days I tried this. I ate steamed kale, spinach, broccoli with various oils with a little chicken or grass fed beef and some Himalayan pink salt and so far over the last 4 days my blood sugar at wake up has been in the 90's. I used an Accu Check Aviva meter. Hope this helps someone out.

After traditional cancer treatment saved me but left me with very poor quality of life, I vowed that if it ever came back, I would not allow chemo or radiation again, and have always planned to use fasting & Keto to do what VA health care cannot. The holy Scriptures the word of God talks about Satan being the ruler of this world. He does not want us to know the power of fasting because it is the way to sacrifice the flesh and being able to have spiritual contact with God through his Holy Spirit. Jesus himself said that we would need to fast once he was gone from earth. It’s a very powerful way to get contact with the spirit realm that’s why many religions practice it. Even witches and warlocks and Satanist practices and it’s one of the biggest things they do more than any other religion because it’s the only way to tap into the spiritual realm. So you have to be very careful when you fast if it’s being done for spiritual reasons because if you do not have the Holy Spirit in you then you can be exposed to a spiritual warfare that you’re not ready for only the Holy Spirit which is Jesus Christ has the power and has defeated every worldly spirit demonic entity Satan and all his fallen angels. There’s a reason why this world has lied to us about fasting and not eating because they want to keep us weak in the spirit. There’s a fast food restaurant in every corner food food food everywhere they want to keep your belly full and your mind cluttered and foggy. Wake up people! Accept the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved!!!!

Dr Berry, let me tell you something. Thanks to all that you and Neisha & also Morgan have done, my life has changed for the better, dramatically so. I'm probably the worst carnivore in the world because I cheat (keto cheat) all the time. But your knowledge and wisdom has helped me drop nearly 60 pounds of fat and inflammation. At age 46 for the first time in 20 years my knees, feet and ankles don't hurt, my back is better and my brain fog improves every week. I thought I was one of those unlucky people who just got old early despite exercising every day and eating a "sensible diet". Now, I not only have my life back but I'm getting a new one! I'm a middle aged first time nursing student and thanks to the keto way of eating I know I'll be physically able to do the job I thought life and poor health had robbed from me. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU 💜💜💜

Hi Dr. Berry, I wanted to ask, on a keto diet how do you avoid becoming dehydrated at night? I've been doing keto for 18 months now and love it, but find myself walking a tightrope between being dehydrated overnight and on the other hand drinking lots of water and having to wake up to pee. Does anyone else have this sort of problem? Any tips? Thanks!
@joost11834 жыл бұрын
Just drink more at night if you feel that you're dehydrated in the morning. You could add more salts to retain more. It isnt neccesarily bad to wake up in the night, you need full sleep cycles, not a specific number of hours-on-end.
@joost11834 жыл бұрын
I cant find the English term, you can check if you're dehydrsted by pulling on your skin on your hand and monitoring how fast in returns to a normal, flat state, faster resting heart rate, dry mouth etc. You probably aren't dehydrated if you consume 1500ml daily for fem / 2000 male. Goodluck

Thank you Dr. Berry for this very informative and concise overview of the myriad of benefits of fasting. If I would add anything to this I would instruct people to do a low carb diet first, prior to embarking on any regular intermittent or extended fasting regiment. By adapting to a low carb diet first, and practicing low carb strictly for two or three months, you stabilize blood sugar while training your body to run on fat/ketones. This allows ones transition to fasting to be easier, because you have mitigated or eliminated the blood sugar fluctuations that are the hallmark of a high carb way of eating.

@Blonde Logan I just did my first fast this weekend. It was only 24 hours but I was surprised how amazingly easy it was. Water, black coffee and green tea with a pinch of I too use to get headaches if I didn't eat regularly, like missing a meal or even delaying a meal by a few hours. Recently I revamped my entire nutrition plan, cutting way back on carbs and I think that helped immensely. I watched one YT video where it was suggested to go keto for 3-5 days before a long duration fast as it will not only start ketosis sooner but will make the beginning of the fast much easier. That's why I'm thinking cutting way back on carbs helped me. Not only didn't I get any headaches but I didn't even have cravings or even urges to eat. Here's something else I came across on YT for longer duration fasts to replenish minerals and keep electrolytes from getting too out of wack. Twice Daily - 1/2 cup water + 1/2 tsp baking soda + 2 tsp apple cider vinegar + pinch lemon juice; During Day 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan salt.

I started intermittent fasting on and off over 2 years ago and I can relate that it really helps so much. I'm now trying to fast everyday not less than 20hours, my longest fast has been 60 hours, haven't reached 72 yet. I not only lost weight, but helped my insulin resistance get better (and get my periods back, PCOS). All along with a healthy nutrition. I was almost 280 pounds November 2017, I'm 170. I don't fast for weightloss, I fast because it helped me understanf the difference between hunger and cravings, and also to feel much better. And I work out while fasting (never had any issue in these 2 years).
