I'm working on this concept, too, and my best tip is "buy it when you get there." Maybe you will eventually come home with more stuff than you brought (and a heavier suitcase) but for most of your trip it will be lighter. For example, if you MIGHT need a jacket or sweater for a chilly day but you're not sure, then buy it at your destination. Some of my favorite sweaters are ones I bought in France for exactly this reason. Ditto shoes, if you MIGHT need fancy shoes for a special occasion, then buy them while you're there. Part of the fun of any vacation is shopping, after all. And only take enough toiletries to get you through the first couple of days and buy the rest as needed or use the ones provided by the hotel. Also, I carry a compact, collapsible duffle bag to bring home clothes and/or souvenirs that might not fit in my carry on. You can check one of the bags coming home if you have to.

@@lisalu910 I read a travel blog by a guy who says he carries a thermal undershirt in the summer, instead of a jumper, in case of chilly days. I'm considering this but I always pack a thin waterproof jacket - far more useful in the summer and surprisingly warm. But a long sleeve shrug is another very small & lightweight option (and much easier to put on when out & about, than an undershirt). And personally, I tend to freeze in the air so always want to use that warmer layer anyway

Totally agree about halving your clothing, I would add though that in general you only need 2 weeks worth of clothing max no matter how long you are traveling. I did study abroad for 2mos and 2 weeks of clothes was perfect, I occasionally chafed at the lack of variety but since I was traveling it was fine. If you are going for 6mos or something you might want more lol.

Such a good tip to weigh your suitcase. When I travel to London on the train I know that I cannot take more than 8 kg because I cannot lift IT above my head if I have to put the suitcase in the overhead shelf. To gauge toiletries for a trip, a couple of weeks before you go fill your containers and make a note of the day you started using them this way you will know how many days worth you have in each container. Just make sure your daughter isn't using them without your knowledge, otherwise your calculations will be up the spout. 🤣 your travel tips are invaluable thank you so much x

I completely agree! I have a rule if I can't lift my suitcase at home (talking about my checked bag) then I know I definitely need to take things out. 💯 about the need to weigh a carry-on. Those fee's can add up! Good tip about doing a "test run" for the toiletries! Very smart!

Great post, thank you for getting right to the point and providing visuals. This summer I packed in a carry on for 4 weeks of hot weather travel and 2 weeks of cold weather. I took 4 Rip Skirts that I could wear both a black and white top with, sandals, sneakers and hiking shoes (which are minimal rom Xero Shoes), 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of hiking pants, 3 long sleeve tops, 1 fleece and one waterproof windbreaker, plus a nightgown, panties and 3 bras, socks. I had a small bag for the small amount of shopping I did. When a washer and dryer wasn’t available the sink worked fine. I was so glad I didn’t have to lug a large, heavy suitcase on cobbled streets, trains and up and down stairs.

@@tam6912 when I'm doing a multi-climate trip I try to extend the wear of all my items as much as possible. I swear by opaque base layers that can also be worn as tights or long sleeve t-shirt (bamboo can be good). And tunic dresses or mini dresses - can wear as dresses in heat or as over shirt in cold (and to sleep in rather than carrying extra night clothes). Then light but warm jumper (merino, apaca or possibly bamboo). The waterproof jacket is a must - surprisingly warm bcos blocks wind and cold. But shoes can be tricky - totally on board with the barefoot shoes (did you know you can get sheepskin insoles to protect your feet more from the cold ground?)

I used to agree with you on the hair dryer until I was caught on a trip with several hotel rooms with no or non working hair dryers. My hair tools are a good round brush and a hair dryer so having a working on is kinda a must. I found a great - small travel sized one and it just lives in my carry on luggage. I also keep one set of "hotel shampoo & conditioner" in my toiletry case because I have stayed in accommodations that did not provide this. The hotel versions were enough until I could get to a store.

I created an online list years ago and, like you, I constantly tweak it. I love your idea of color-coding while you pack. A tip I learned from someone online is to turn your underwear inside out so that u can wear them 2x. I hate washing clothes while travelling but your hairdryer tip is a good one. Color coordinating is key with olive greens and khaki working best for me. I just got back from 2 wks in Peru and packed exactly what I needed: 7 prs/underwear, 4/sports bras, 4/long pants (w/side snaps), 3 l/s shirts, 4 s/s tops, ExOfficio mesh sleeve jacket w/hoodie, Royal Robbins all-weather jacket w/re-movable hoodie & sleeves, Keen's Whisper sandals, Merrell Terran Post II sandals, ExOfficio BugsAway Baja Cape hat. All of which were packed in my eBags Mother Load 21" Carry-on Duffel with plenty of room to spare. It is the best bag I've ever owned and I've done a lot of traveling! In addition, I also took my Osprey Pogo backpack and a nylon backpack which comes in it's own zippered bag (for short day trips and or purchases).

I like your video. All of these are good suggestions. But as far as toiletries, I wear contacts, so I need to take my contact solutions because sometimes it’s hard to find them overseas. Also on , shampoo and conditioner, I have very dry hair, so I have special shampoos and conditioners that I use which I pack in small 3 ounce bottles. I pack them all in one hanging bag. I agree for today’s world we do need to pack lighter, but you have to remember that there was a time where there was a bellman to help you from the car to the check-in at the airport and then they were on the other side to receive your bags. There were people to help you and put your bags in a taxi and then go to the hotel where again you had people helping. My mother would have about 3 to 5 suitcases on a trip. We did not have to handle all these bags. But in today’s world it is more hands-on and everyone has to fend for themselves. But I remember a time when flying and traveling was a luxury and we didn’t feel like we were desperate people.

So now I probably will have to go buy another pair of shoes while I have many shoes at home. This thing of packing so light is for people that usually don’t go to formal events.

Nice dinner or formal dinner?? Because unless it's super formal I'd suggest you just get yourself a cute pair of foldable ballet flats. Can get some really nice ones. I recently did carryon only 7 week winter trip in Canada. Wore snowboots on plane and took foldable ballet flats as my *only* other pair of shoes. Many family Xmas events + dinners in some pretty swanky hotels - no problem. And really, unless this is a networking event, does it really matter what shoes you're wearing?

How do we obtain a copy of your terrific electronic packing list?

I thought about sharing but wasn’t sure how. I would make yourself a master one on your computer with everything you think you could possibly need on a trip. As you go on, you’ll add to it. ☺️

You should roll clothing pieces in order to fit more and make it less wrinkly

I wonder if these one-month-clothing-in- one-carry ons actually weigh the maximum allowed, I.e. 10 kg. Wouldn’t think so

You would have to be very selective with what you bring. However, that wasn’t the topic of this video. 😉 Hope you got some useful tips out of it! 💡

@@SophiesTravelSecrets on the other hand, I do believe that it’s an important part of these type of videos, as it’s not only important to pack smartly, but at the same time complying with the ever more stringent airline requirements regarding weight. No use if you have packed smart… but your carry on outweighs the allowed kg.

Sorry but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip. x

When I was staying in a London youth hostel, I helped an American girl get her luggage to the airport to fly home. She had two huge suitcases to check in and she couldn't even lift them on her own. Ridiculous.

Hi, I have a question? How do I know how to pack for a person who size 18, unlike the smaller sizes shown on shown. Appreciate and guidance you can give. Have a great day. USA 🇺🇸 Northern, California
@SophiesTravelSecrets2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I would recommend bringing items made with lightweight fabric that you can roll to save space. Bring pieces that work very well with other pieces that you can layer if need be. Wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on the plane. I hope this helps xx

I also look at the little flimsy things and know my tops etc take up way more space! I use packing cells to roll and pack clothes. I wear a longline cardigan on the plane that can double as a dressing gown if needed. I use layers a lot, and take a black longsleeve merino top and black merino leggings. These can double as pyjamas if need be, but their value is that worn under other layers they provide the warmth on colder days that you would normally get from bulkier garments worn on top. A slip for under a dress can also be a nightie. My scarf on the plane is more pashmina size and wool, so it makes a great blanket if the plane is cold, or wrapped around me on a cool night on holiday gives extra warmth. A knitted wool hat does not weigh as much as an extra jumper but can keep you warm. Also, you don't need to turn knickers inside out for one more day's use; just use a panty liner the first day, remove it for the second (my mother-in-law gave me that tip). Wash your lingerie in the morning shower with you and place between towels on the bathroom floor and stamp on them to remove excess moisture. Hang to dry, over a hanger over the back of a chair a metre or more away from a heater or heat vent, or on a shrub on a private verandah.

Adding to mamabear, if going to a hot climate, a (opaque) kimono can function better than long line cardi. And I take 1 of those pocket rain jackets - not just for rain but it's amazing how warm they can be (and you can get some pretty stylish looking ones - for hot weather you *don't* want a lined one). Also, a sarong or Turkish towel is so much better than a blanket scarf or Pashmina if headed to a hot location. But I've done holidays to severe cold (for almost 2 months) carryon only; and I'm size 18. It's doable, you just gotta be smart, ruthless and think outside the box
