"Prepare to be disappointed" made me laugh out loud. It's so true. Where I garden, in the High Mojave, and I think in most deserts last summer we had extra extreme heat. We know and accept that we have extreme heat every year, but to have more than usual was brutal. As I think about my losses, I also think about all that I did eat. And I'm grateful. I think it's important to accept the ebb and flow of gardening. A letting go or acceptance is so important. You captured that well here. Thank you for another great video.

I LOVE that Summer pep talk!! I am legit traumatized from last summer and I've been working for months on putting in irrigation before it hits again. Incidentally, I told you on another video that I was struggling trying to find ways to irrigate my containers that I move around all the time. And I finally did it! They have these easy-lock 1/4" connectors that pop on and off, so you can detach your containers and re-configure them easily. It's been super nice, as I've already rolled containers back for a tropical storm and to re-arrange for other reasons.

We garden in TN, much more do-able than AZ. But having gardened in MI most of my life, there is a learning curve to gardening in TN summer heat also. I'll be trying out shade cloth this year for the first time. I appreciate your content dense, yet concise videos.

I’ve been following your channel for years, and the Ollas and vermicompost buckets have been game changers in my dry-mega drought-central California weather. Aside from the AZ monsoons, central CA has similar weather to you (over 100 degrees, rare freezing temps, nothing grows well in the summer). Thank you for all your amazing advice and insights!

Thank you for this amazing video!!! I'm so glad as a first time gardener that you're in the same climate as me! So far everything in my garden seems to be okay, but I know I need to get the mulch put in the bed. I might also move my sunflower container to the side of my raised bed to provide the tomatoes with a little bit of shade. I know I have to do the shade cloth with my garden though. My backyard gets very very very intense sun for most of the day.

Great advice, thank you 👍💚🌱 Last year i had my first gardening season on the balcony after moving, and i found out it was pretty hot and almost all day long in sun. Several plants did struggle with these conditions. Some stopped growing or lost their blossoms and fruits. I never had so much heat and sun on one spot where i had been gardening before. This is a real challenge for me. So i'm glad to get good advice for it. I already thought about changing summer crops and shading it better. But the ollas look really nice and practical.

I am getting ready to put my shade cloth up tomorrow. I use 40% (west valley). I have some dinosaur kale that still seems fine. Can it survive our summer? I love the spring in the garden. Everything is taking off!

I've had some lacinato (dinosaur) kale that lived for nearly 2 years. But usually it bolts when temps climb.

Do you have any experience using neem meal? I find during the hot months using neem oil burns the leaves and I'm wondering if using it through the soil systemically will help. Trying to keep aphids off new growth seems impossible.
@ffs61582 жыл бұрын
@Leslie Behrens Oh interesting, thanks! I have a lot of lady bugs in the spring but once it starts hitting the upper 90s they seem to disappear while the aphids go into overdrive.

I’m container gardening in food safe buckets upcycled and will be using a watering can all summer long. Is this a pipe dream?

Watering may be tough, but if you have enough time, it could work. Move containers to a spot with afternoon shade.

I have a raised bed with some veggies (a way above ground raised bed) am thinking of getting that grid thing that you use and being in the desert too I was wondering how often and for how long do you water your veggies. Mine aren't growing very well right now and I have been hand watering but not sure if I am doing too much or not enough so I want to try that grid thing.
@GrowingInTheGarden2 жыл бұрын
Right now I'm watering every 3 days for 15 minutes.

So happy to have found you! First time gardener here in Mesa. Would you say it's too late to start my luffa seeds?
@Farmynator2 жыл бұрын
If you're not sure, try it. There's no loss in trying because if you keep those seeds for next year, less will germinate, all seeds have an expiration date. Don't throw packets after expiration, those that do come up will be fine and even if they won't produce as much the first year, you can collect it's seed and their offspring will be more easy to grow in your garden, because it took those survival genetics from their parents.
@GrowingInTheGarden2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. I’d give it a try.

Maybe this is a silly question, but would burying a water bottle with some holes poked in it do something similar to the Olla?
